The most similar character betrayal to Big Smoke comes in the form of Dex, who primarily appears in the first two Saints Row games.
One of the more shocking and painful character betrayals on the list (as if there weren't enough) has to be General Shepherd in Modern Warfare 2.
After breaching through Makarov's safehouse in Georgia you protect a DSM device from countless waves of enemies as it installs Makarov's computer files. When leaving the safehouse for extraction with Ghost, General Shepherd retrieves the DSM and eliminates both Roach and Ghost. While this is happening, Price and Soap have been ambushed by Shepherd's soldiers in the airplane boneyard.
The reason as to why General Shepherd betrays Task Force 141 in the first place is due to the fact that he wants to kill Makarov himself as a result of Makarov's actions in the previous game. Shepherd decides that effectively tying up all loose ends connected with finding and killing Makarov will make him a war hero in return.
