I Thought... (Election topic)

I was wrong.

I thought America would laugh at the idea of a reality TV show host becoming the president.

I thought that Bernie was the outsider we could believe in.

I thought that Hillary was clever enough not to blow it.

I thought (some) Republicans would have the balls not to support a monster.

I thought telling blatant lies was a black mark on your character.

I thought presidential candidates were supposed to have a plan.

I thought the fact that he was a bad businessman would put off conservatives.

I thought multiple marriages and affairs would offend religious people.

I thought the KKK’s seal of approval was a death sentence.

I thought “grab em by the pussy” was the last straw.

I thought going on trial for child rape would be a bigger deal.

I thought white America didn’t hate us this much.

I thought we were better than this.

I was wrong.

Maybe if Democrats had worried less about making up things about Putin and painting everyone not supporting their terrible candidate in the run up (people who could possibly be won over) as racist or stupid, instead going for the route of say POLICY, they could have won. Instead they were no different than Trump and they lost at his game.

The way you guys talk down on people as "uneducated" is exactly why Clinton and these elites just crashed and burned.

Hillary Clinton was an incredibly weak candidate. She had no message, nothing to rally behind, nothing to excited about other than "look at this guy, he's crazy right?" To a majority of voters Hillary is the epitome of a corrupt system that has failed them and left them behind and in the end all Trump had to say was "I am not a politician" and that alone sealed the deal for them. Trump is a populist, his goal was to appeal to the majority and that was exactly what he did. At the end of the day all of the egregious and deplorable things he's said and done don't matter because he isn't a politician.

Hillary Clinton's goal was lets get as much money as possible and hope we have more resources than the other guy. Instead of giving people something to fight for, instead of standing up for the disheartened and forgotten she was a boring standard ass politician and that is why she didn't win. Clinton and Trump are the most disliked candidates in American history (that's polls not opinion) the advantage Hillary had was Trump was the most hated. An advantage she did nothing with. She almost lost to a Jewish guy who openly called himself a socialist and now she lost to a reality TV host. The DNC and the majority of the democratic bubble made a major mistake backing her the way they did.

I'm shitting on Clinton a lot here but lets be clear, I voted for her. I voted for her because I knew the incredible risk a Trump presidency would bring. And now it seams to be a reality.

Hold on to your butts folks.

So he uses respectful diplomacy with a country we should be seeking peace with. Okay. Then he opposes NATO being pushed all the way out to their doorstep, which it should never have been in the first place. NATO was a tool used to fight the cold war and expand American influence. Imagine how the United States would react if say Russia set up military operations in Mexico or even South America? You can look at the Cuban Missile Crisis as a historical example.

It's a perfect example of hypocritical, Imperialistic American foreign policy. We are not at war with Russia. The Cold War ended.

I work in technology in a very liberal California where we just legalized recreational marijuana, so I'll be fine.

Trump won white women. This means goodbye to Planned Parenthood, and possibly Roe v Wade. There will be no equal pay for equal work.

Trump won white men in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. They're going to be disappointed when those factory jobs don't come back, while they lose their health insurance.

He lost every minority demographic, and they will be the ones to suffer the brunt of this madman and his cohorts.

People that threw away their protest vote had a hand in this too. Don't give me that bullshit that both candidates were bad. You own it.

It may take a year, maybe two, but all that supported this vindictive racist, sexist, Islamophobic demagogue with zero experience, explicitly or implicitly, will regret it.

I think there are two take-aways from this election:

1. The media has a real hard clean up job in front of them.

2. The Democrats made a huge mistake by nominating Hillary Clinton. In a change election, they needed Bernie. He would have beaten Trump by a landslide.

If anything, this election along with Brexit shows that people want change more than just 'the lesser of two evils'.

It also shows how incredibly out of touch middle class, university educated people are with what americans see as important.

Ignorance.

Let me distill things down for you.

I live in "flyover country". Yes, the part of the country that gets poked fun at, ridiculed as uneducated, and widely portrayed by a biased and agenda driven media as "backwards", "bigots", and "racist" among other things.

I am anti-Trump and anti-HRC. They're both shit. Ok? Understood? Now, how did this Trump thing happen?

I abstained from voting. Others did not. What drove millions of people to the polls for Trump? It is rather simple, but something so few on your side grasp, but is common fucking knowledge on my end. For YEARS, we have had to listen to people call the entirety of the middle portion of the country and even suburban and rural areas of the coasts many unsavory, and more importantly, untrue things. You likely think your assumption is true. You probably think this large swath of people are degenerate, racist, bigoted assholes. Had you actually have spent ANY time in these places or talking to these people, you'd realize they're actually way nicer and better people than you've ever come across. They would welcome you into their homes, stop on the road to help you change a flat, or give you their jacket if you were cold. Yet, simply because they identify as conservative, they are straight vilified by ignorant and naive people such as yourself. They don't give a shit if Sally is fucking Shawn or Sierra. They don't care if their boss is black. They aren't anymore racist, bigoted, or homophobic than you are.

Votes for Trump weren't even votes for Trump. Can you process that? They were pushback against the bs allegations we've had to endure for years now suggesting we are sub-human bile bags. It was very much a "fuck you" to the media and all of the progressives who honestly seem more like regressive these days. People ask how can you vote for somebody who David fucking Duke endorsed? How can you vote for somebody who uttered the words, "grab them by the pussy?" How can you vote for someone who discriminated against black tenants? Let me turn that around on you. How can you vote for somebody who accepts support and millions of dollars from countries who straight up hang/stone gays? How can you vote for somebody who knowingly got a child rapist off in trial and then laughed at the victim? How can you allege racism at Trump and conveniently forget the Clinton Crime Bill and that Hillary herself called blacks "super predators"?

Uneducated? Dear God. Look in the mirror. Upset with tonight's events? Then learn from it. YOU created this. Maybe you shouldn't assume half of this country is racist, bigoted, and homophobic.

I would be seriously interested in knowing how some impartial academics will break down the order of events that led to this happening a year or two from now.

The situation has been shrowded in so much hyperbole from both sides that it's really difficult to actually tell right now what it is that happened. It seems like almost every outlet has a stake in the race.

This. Also it isn't just outlets. It's people. Thank the internet for that. People get super extreme and it clouds their judgement. Each candidate was playing on different extremes, and each was just trying to vilify the other. The moment you look at the situation objectively you see that Trump is a B Tier celebrity on the same level as Paris Hilton. He has no experience, no qualification, and the very fact that he even RAN was a joke to begin with. Much less that he is now the President of a major first world country.

And that swings to Hilary too. If you look at her objectively all you see is a legitimate politician layered and layered in so much mud and dirt that even in a legitimate campaign against a George W Bush she'd lose. At some point people on both sides got so fucking biased and so fucking caught up in their left vs right bullshit that the bar for what actually constituted an acceptable presidential candidate was thrown out.

If people weren't that blind the first question from the public during any rally or debate would of been "what do we do if we don't want to elect either of you?" It should of been echoed from every Clinton and Trump rally all the way to the live debates. It should of been the talking point. What if millions of people write NO on the ballot, and simply REFUSE this bullshit election? What then? But of course the ruling class will continue to rule, just like it always does. *shakes head*

I am sorry for the people who might lose out on Obamacare.

On the other hand we'll see how many campaign promises he'll manage to keep. I'm more afraid what crazy laws will be passed that will make big business easier. In the long run I think America will be pissed, as Trumps following seemed more fervent and will probably take it worse if their key promises are not kept, as compared to his detractors for their respective candidate.

For now there are a lot of unknowns. A lot has been speculated, but we'll just have to wait and see what this Republican America will be. Short term I think you'll see a lot of domestic changes, especially those that will please supporters. Foreign policy will probably be put on the backburner as it is a hornets nest right now and the US has nothing to gain.

Perfect in response to people shouting down the "uneducated" and "rednecks" in this very thread. Ridiculous. I'm sure they think they are people who support democracy and freedom too, which is even more funny. People live in bubbles now and they think they do not and that they know it all because they got a degree at some college somewhere. I know people that didn't go to college that are way smarter than people I know with degrees.

Regardless, your point is right on. There is so much of a bubble mentality here.

Wow. This was unexpected! I mean, Trump supporters had been yelling about the Silent Majority and Meme Magic and all that bullshit, and sure, I always thought he had an outside chance to win, but a lot of these prediction models are going to have to be scrapped as the 95-99%ers look like total garbage right now.

Trump's not going to ass-blast the sun out of the sky tomorrow. Sure, this sucks (well, I think it sucks at least), but the game isn't over; it's a great call to action. Be diligent. If something you think is crazy is proposed in the future, call/write/email your senators and representatives. Express concern! Give them the data they need to understand where there constituency is on the issues ahead. Become more active in the process, as apathy allows (but isn't solely responsible, mind you) for outcomes like this. No, that doesn't fix executive actions and won't affect the SCOTUS nomination, but it's better than wailing in despair. If you are unhappy with this outcome, do something constructive about it!

We survived Bush, right? Look ahead to 2020. This isn't the outcome a lot of us wanted, but it's not the end.

Hillary had been subjected to character assassination (both externally and self-inflicted) for many, many years, on top of the inherent sexism that seems to be pervasive in this country. No, that's not the only reason she lost, obviously; painting all Trump supporters as stupid, sexist, racist rednecks isn't going to get us anywhere but right back here again. But Trump won't have the luxury of a weakened opponent in 2020, or at least not to this degree. I've stated before that she might be the only candidate that could have lost this; maybe that's unfair to her, but optics seem to be everything.

All is not lost.

Here's a "fun" little factoid for everyone. Hillary Clinton lost Florida today, a state in which as much as 23.3% of the voting age black population is barred from voting because of a felony conviction. Couple that with Hillary's championing of the 94 crime bill on her husband's behalf that I'm sure everyone remembers and it's a good reminder that your chickens will always come home to roost.

But nah, it's probably Jill Stein and Gary Johnson's fault or something.

Has anybody checked on Keith Olbermann? Given how he's been leading up to this, I'm worried he's finally suffered an aneurism and died.

I think about when this whole thing started to become as close as Brexit in the polls I began assuming we were going to see a repeat and watch this whole thing shift to Trump at the last minute. There's so so many factors for why that happened, but I think a big one is Clinton failing to do the leg work she needed to in the rust belt.

I seriously didn't want Trump to win, at all. I wanted Clinton to win, truly.

The only thing I find positive of all of this, is that is slightly more likely Russia won't launch at us Satan 2. Maybe? My head will sleep easy tonight, knowing that this political nightmare is finally over. I do hope that our totalitarian-leaning four-year future, is nice and comfortable. Other than deportation and everything bad and negative stuff, you know, The Giver/1984/The Walking Dead's Governor future looks like it's coming tomorrow or so, and that might be comfy, and I look forward to that.

I don't see how the fuck he's supposed to force Apple's hand in anything, but that should be interesting. John Oliver, Seth Myers, and Stephen Colbert are all gonna have field days for years to come.

Fuck.

Trump has proved, like many others before him, that there is a well of racism that runs so deep within American culture that it can be tapped at any moment that social progress has started to arrest its development.

Oh, and being a conservative doesn't equate to being homophobic, racist, or bigoted. That is the actual reason Trump is even a thing. Good people are tired of being talked down to and alleged as the aforementioned stereotypes by naive leftists. It really is as simple as that. I love all people, and like many conservatives, simply employ the "live and let live" ethos. Yet, I have been called so many awful things by people left of center who think I am a monster. My experience is a common one and voila... here's the end result.

I was severely distraught over Brexit here in the UK, so I truly understand how some of you in the US feel right now - but please remember that there are good people working hard in all parties, and no matter who is ostensibly in control, good can still come.

Wishing you all the best that I can because no matter what, you will get through the next 4 years. Please don't dwell on specifics of the election, you'll only feel worse. Elections are extremely complicated and voters are affected by a multiplicity of conflicting factors all at once (which is why polls and predictions always have extremely high uncertainties). Take a break. Take solace in all the good in world. Enjoy the best time to be playing video games. <3

Then come back and scrutinize your leader's actions. Whether the election went as you wanted or not, don't let those in power now get a free ride. Government workers serve the people throughout their tenure, not just election night.

A little off topic, but this goes to show just how important it is to limit even the politicians from your party to the scope of the position and to disallow things not previously established via law or precedence.

All of those unchallenged, unilateral executive orders from Obama are now a big, big problem.
