I Thought... (Election topic)

I was wrong.

I thought America would laugh at the idea of a reality TV show host becoming the president.

I thought that Bernie was the outsider we could believe in.

I thought that Hillary was clever enough not to blow it.

I thought (some) Republicans would have the balls not to support a monster.

I thought telling blatant lies was a black mark on your character.

I thought presidential candidates were supposed to have a plan.

I thought the fact that he was a bad businessman would put off conservatives.

I thought multiple marriages and affairs would offend religious people.

I thought the KKK’s seal of approval was a death sentence.

I thought “grab em by the pussy” was the last straw.

I thought going on trial for child rape would be a bigger deal.

I thought white America didn’t hate us this much.

I thought we were better than this.

I was wrong.

I'm not sure whether this has been shared in the thread already, but this is a great 'let's take a step back' bit by MSNBC.

@darkecho117: at least part of the answer is that it didn't seem necessary. Look at how little of a chance all the polls gave him before the election. This didn't feel like a "holy crap, we need to take action" sort of situation as much as a foregone conclusion. I think that also explains the level of shock and surprise that people are feeling.

@sackmanjones: In contrast though, when they thought they were going to win, a large number of Hillary supporters were telling the Trump supporters to cowboy up and accept the results as they came. It turns out that no matter which side of politics you are one you have your jerks carrying on.

I'm not from the USA so I have no horse in this race (and actually understand and respect both votes, unlike many), but this stuff is fascinating to watch.

Since I'm not familiar with that country's system, I honestly ask: What can actually be done to challenge Trump's presidency short of waiting to vote for another while making a better left (or right) wing? I'm genuinely curious.

This is pretty much why Trump won, or at least it's a large part of it. The media practically told everyone that they didn't even need to vote. Just one more way that the Donald Trump presidency is essentially the American version of the Brexit vote.

After 1,000+ replies and hundreds of those having to be deleted or edited due to various rule violations along with numerous warnings and other moderation issues stemming from this topic, we're going to close this one down. Thanks to those who were able to remain civil, but keeping discussions like this on track and within the Community Guidelines is a major undertaking requiring constant communication amongst the entire mod team and staff, and ultimately this is a site about video games. Let's all take a break and go play some games and have some fun or something.

There is going to be a temporary moratorium on election/political threads as we all take a much needed break, so for awhile any threads about the election, Clinton, Trump, or related topics will be subject to immediate closure or deletion.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation, and have a nice day.
