@wardcleaver: my question is Is there no automatic performance boost from PS5 hardware-side to the PS4 version, natively? Because if there is we are talking about multiple versions of the same game PS3->PS4->PS4 uprezzed via PS5->PS5 version. Can’t wait for digital foundry to talk about that one even with pollen in Boston somewheres. Dust particles make or break games for me. $70? Sign me up.

Hot take #7321. PS Now is a better service than Gamepass. Only problematic part for me is they never actually give you games to keep when your subscriptions lapses with PS Plus. I haven’t touched my XBox One since I played Scott Pilgrim in January. I’ve got too much going on. My subscription will lapse this October after about 6 of the last 10 years with an active subscription. So in total I have about 144 Xbox 360 games that are permanently in my collection that I never really touched because I was playing about 20-25 games. Sure the games in my collection are collecting dust but once my subscription lapses I’m going to just explore what I have an kind of leave gaming in its current form. I’m from the NES era where a game like Duck Tails or Chip and Dales could carry me for the whole summer. So a full fledged game times 114 + what I already own is enough. With PS plus all the games I get for “free” vaporize once my subscription ends. And most importantly with PS Now I’m not presented the opportunity to buy those games. Despite my interest in the games on Ps Now plus all the free games from “stay at home” I just can’t get behind there unwillingness to let me peace out of their service with anything permanent.

@anominal: I could spoil the game in 8 words. A remake might add a word. There are other angles to view the first game. Police presence. Government management sim. Joel and Ellie is just lazy. Now I’ll watch the show because real actors can bring me to tears.

This age (2021-2023) will be remembered for the backwards compatible games that got breathed new life. Stubbs the Zombie gets greenlit because the rights owner’s lawyer says we can cut you a check for $2 million if you allow the game on BC. We can even get it ported to Switch and PS4 with minimal work. $2 million is the floor $20 million if we can get these special editions to move and the game becomes a meme. Just sign here. No you don’t have to do anything. Nope. You still retain rights. This is going to be the loop we are in for a couple of years. The God of Wars and Halos are going to be trash fires with no apparent reason for being next gen other than they can be. I don’t think a pro basketball team can practice via zoom and be good. Same goes for game development. I’m sure there’s edge cases like the AC franchise or that one game where nobody works on the same continent. But those were edge cases when getting a fax machine part didn’t require 6 weeks on back order to get.

The issue is that they have painted themselves into a corner with the Last of Us 2 premise. Now If they could somehow allow for multiple endings but some of the story beats have to stay put. Remakes and remasters are the safest bet during COVID churn. You can’t take risks and have all your eggs in one basket (employee) for them to just up and quit on you. So you’ve got a game blueprint and you can maybe even do some ff7 remake bs and release this in chapters to coincide with the Tv show. Who knows? It’s honestly a waste and joke and makes me wonder if backwards compatibility for PS4 is not in hardware like XBOX for this specific reason.

@zombiepie: it’s all just Lip Service. More than likely they have a vision for a free-to-play battle royale which, in a pre-fortnite world, would have given skins from completing challenges in the single player game. Battle royale makes sense in this world so maybe they want to compete with Halo Infinite or the dead Mario 100. They really have nothing in that free-to-play space. Maybe a Warhawk reboot would be cool.

By not opting for a native performance bump like Xbox they can time their patches to marketing deals or withhold patches all together whenever a remake makes sense.

Last of Us is an okay game. The puzzles make the game terrible. I played the ps3 game a year ago and a PS4 version is superfluous so the PS5 version is as well. I imagine they want to do something with multiplayer. Unless that game can muster branching story paths it’s taking all my gut not to just spoil the game right here and right now so maybe they can cancel this waste of a project.

@bigsocrates: nobody is claiming 100% of the people. But it works on the right kind of person 100% of the time. So 2.5% of a stream will try 3D Doritos because of profuct placement. Or even worse the streamer mentioning the chips on stream. Watching someone stream is an innate curiosity. If you’re curious you’re susceptible. The only streams I watched in all my years from Giant Bomb was the talk over stuff for press conferences. Everything else I consume on my own time. Twitch’s bread and butter is the live stream. You can have measured results with ‘offer code’ this or that. I traditionally skip the first one minute of the beast/bomb because I don’t want to hear or internalize anything. Right now 99% of us looking to create a website because we’ve heard squarespace (insert this weeks bombcast #) of times so the marketing works. Is this was Jeff B is going to be doing now? I’m sure his conversations will be tempered accordingly.

@bigsocrates: idk. Streamers have a greater ability to leverage trust in terrible ways. I’ll takes Jeff’s opinion on new Taco Bell fare to heart because he likes Tony Hawk as much as I do (too much so in the year 2020 .. it’s a bygone product from a bygone era). I listen to him as much as I would a regular friend but when everything on Twitch is the Truman Show it gives me pause. Total product placement 24/7. Twitch only has value with the streamers at the bottom of the scroll. Everybody else I might have envied when I was 12 years old since I might have done a posterboard on potential careers. You couldn’t pay me to do that shit. Thank gosh Xbox one had a Kinect and I got that out of my system.

I think once the dust has settled we are going to find that the exodus and transfer of talent was not in the normal or traditional manners. People probably got sick and tired of working. We all are locked into this loop since March 2020 when you shuffle from device to device. I’m sure a lot of people that were just phoning it in for work pre-covid were extra uninspired. People were probably exploiting their work from home opportunity. Some had to care for loved ones. Some had to relocate. Some had enough. So to fill vacancies you have to do a zoom call and you can’t really gauge someone’s skill set that well so you hire under qualified. You hire over qualified. Training is not existent. People can’t quit because they can’t guarantee anything so they stay put.

It blew my mind when I learned that movies aren’t made in the order of the movie. I’m sure games are the same way. Games like Deathloop may have their entire ‘way forward’ still not fleshed out. Dan in level design holds all the keys and he left to go become a farmer because who wants to program all day. Useless traditional meetings have somehow become even more useless zoom meetings that your entire staff resents you for because you only give 1 hour notices.

The fallout for this is even more troubling because who wants to release a next gen game when theres only a couple of million systems in the wild. Meanwhile those in the wild are being stockpiled probably 1 for every 3 console actually sold. It’s how you get Microsoft bullying Outriders and The Show into day 1 gamepass. It’s a guarantee. Wario64 feels like the most inside or inside jobs and retailers need to sort their stuff out independently and sale through physical in store only or something because I’m going to reach a point where I just don’t participate anymore and find another hobby when I already hate screens as is. Except to post the screed or 2.
