Been playing through Mirrors Edge Catalyst lately, quite late to the party. Mirrors Edge was one of my favorite games from the 360. Flawed, but I enjoyed it immensely.
Catalyst is a better game than the original. The open world works great for the game. It’s fun to run through the world. But it suffers from many of the same problems as the first, and some new issues have cropped up.
The two major issues lie with the combat and the story.
The combat in the first game broke up the momentum of the movement. They addressed this to some degree in Catalyst, and one-on-one encounters actually feel pretty good. Any time the game throws two or more enemies at you simultaneously, it falls apart. The game would be better without any combat whatsoever, but even if they limited fights to one enemy at a time, the game would benefit.
The story in Catalyst is bad. To its credit, I actually remember what happened, and could relate it to you. More than I could say for the first game. The performances are pretty good, and it’s clear that folks on the team actually tried. I respect that. But the plot is ludicrous, and the writing is cringe-worthy. I wish they weren’t so intent on telling a story on such a grand scale. Something more low-key would have complimented the gameplay.
Game has more problems than that, but despite its flaws I really loved it. I think with a little tuning it could be amazing. Unfortunatly I don’t see EA giving the series another shot. I’m appreciative of the two games we got.
