The Notorious Leland Yee Believes in Something I Support

Source: AOL News

The notorious Californian Senator Leland Yee hasn’t exactly been held in my personal high regard for a while now. Oh since he was the main architect behind the Californian game law that criminalized the sale of M rated games to minors. Also he was one of many politicians that got on the hot coffee bandwagon. However recent news now shows that politicians should not necessarily be defined by one set of beliefs.

The reason is that Leland Yee has proposed legislation that would effectively prohibit any text book that contains any of the edits requested by the Texas Board of Education from being used in the state. Previously California and Florida were seen as the balancing factors of what is commonly perceived as the "conservative" Texas (not quite sure why I put quotations around conservative but let's just go with it). However with Florid making edits similar (albeit not as explicit nor as extreme) as Texas, and California sidelined due to budget cuts it seems like Texas based textbooks will reign supreme for a while now.

The whole situation has been rather effectively lampooned by the Daily Show (hey I never said I didn't have an agenda as well).

So for the first time Leland Yee I wish you good luck.

Me on the Quest System

So this is how I feel about the new quest system...

  •  They're pretty cool!
  • Some require knowing obscure facts and details, which I'm good at because I'm a history major!
  • I'm finding that I have a lot of partially completed quests which kind of irks me.
  • Hey notice how I didn't post this on the forums? That's because I'm a good person!
  • I have to find a way to put the task bar back where it originally was...if not I may just send whiny letters to snide about how I want it on top of the screen.
  • The quests are totally distracting me from my mod duties...expect a slight delay for wiki submissions (just kidding).
  • People are clogging up the forums...
  • BE A GOOD PERSON AND DON'T SPAM THE FORUMS JUST TO COMPLETE TASKS!!!!!

Personal Update! Me Talking about Stuff!!!

Well it was about time I posted a personal update on my blog because…you know a lot has happened lately. But seeing how I have a short attention span I’m gonna do this in bullet points.

  • Yo I’m a mod now and damn happy to be apart of the mod team. They are a great collection of users that I feel proud to be helping and working with them!
  • The Spotlight has now been under my control for a year now and I’m really proud of that also. The thing has essentially become my baby and it’s only nourishment is you guys being awesome
  • When you go to the Whiskey Media About Us page and click “Registered Contributor Profiles” it links to me, and that’s super cool.
  • I’m really hoping that my ego doesn’t get the better of me…must resist to call my myself tsar…I am better than that…
  • Turns out that my favorite pair of jeans were my sister’s… why do women have such comfy pants? Also I’m not embarrassed to say that I have worn women's clothing because I looked so damn good while doing it.
  • I use ellipses far too much…
  • I want to buy a pair of Capri pants after wearing my sister’s pants but I don’t know how I would go into a clothing store and not get weird looks.
  • So I'm gonna be blogging more often now for realzies now okay?!?! Especially seeing how there are a whole bunch of new users who are going to be following me now.

I Just Bought Oregon Trail for My Phone, So YES

It seems like whenever I feel compelled to dismiss mobile gaming some game comes out and changes my mind about the platform. Whether it be Oregon Trail, DOOM RPG, Mozaki Blocks, Tower Blox, Canabalt, or any other pint sized time waster I see the potential platform. Yes I said the all dangerous P-WORD, POTENTIAL! So I remain open to the idea that mobile gaming can provide experiences that are worthwhile and enjoyable, it's just that so far there are so very few cases of this.

And anyways mobiles are the best way to play Tetris, there I said it.

The Story Behind Falling Blocks

I recently came across this wonderful documentary  (it's old I know) about Tetris that I think is more than worth a view. As someone who was completely oblivious to the controversy and turmoil behind the release of everyone's favorite puzzle game involving falling blocks I was utterly enamored. It's a story that just so ripe with interesting history. So I'll post the first part of the documentary and with that you can watch the rest on your own discretion.

FlashBack: The Spotlight Archive #1

A certain user ( Ververdan0226) thought it would be worth everyone's time to archive the Spotlight so is that everyone can look back at the accomplishments of the community. So I see no reason not to oblige him. One thing of note is that I'm only archiving items on the Spotlight that would change or eventually get removed. I see no reason to archive the links to the IRC every week, and I don't expect any objections over this. So without further ado let's go back in time!

I'm Interested

None of the features that Microsoft is integrating on their UI feel risky or revolutionary but I'm happy that they are there. I use Twitter and Facebook, but I can only image using these features every once and a while. Last.FM sounds extremely inciting because I use Last.FM (though I'm not a paying subscriber) and am looking forward to using it on my Xbox 360. As for the Zune Marketplace I happen to be an owner of a Zune so this was a more than welcomed addition to the Xbox. Sure I already have synched my Zune to my Xbox 360, but I want the option to buy virtual media whenever I please.

SIx Months Down and Still Going Strong

Well it has been over six months since I first started managing the Spotlight and I can't believe that it's really been this long. So thanks everyone for making this possible. To all the mods who intervened when it was necessary, and to the users who have supported the thread with a myriad amount of content and suggestions--thank you. Really all of you guys and girls have made this a joy and have encouraged me to keep on trucking so thank you.

Mini Update Blog 9/22/2009

Okay so I'm going to try my hand on blogging regularly updates like these from now on.  Well see if I make this a habit or not.
This update is missing noteworthy events worth talking about because the author is missing part of his brain. For proof just ask MB.

  • Season premiere of House was great and some of the best TV I've watched in a long time. For me what made it so good was that it hit close to home about conquering you demons and anxieties, but I digress.
  • Community Spotlight updates aren't coming in as quickly as I would like. School really is killing the Spotlight...
  • Just got GTA IV, I know I'm late to the party but for some reason I've never really been a big fan of the series. I'll give it a try but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be as impressed as a lot of people who got it when it first came out.
  • College is getting harder but I expected this so I'm cool.
  • This is some of the best advertising I've seen on Facebook ever.

So that's it for now, next week I guess I'll see if I want to continue this, but seeing how blogging like this is so harmless I probably will.

Hollywood is (Still) In Love with the 1980's with These Reboots

Hollywood is an unusual and curious place where numerous men and women pool their collective ideas together to try and entertain the masses. However time and time again the masses have shown that they sometimes prefer to be entertained by something that is familiar as oppose to something that is new and original, Transformers: Rise of the Fallen as well as Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince should be seen as proof of this. And if the reports of numerous Hollywood sources are correct then the 1980's are not immune to this. With the last Indiana Jones film, reboots of films from the 80's have proven to be successful, even though the quality of these projects is questionable. With that I wish to showcase some of the confirmed reboots to some 80's "classics." Some have potential, others seem futile, and a few just shouldn't be made period.

Romancing the Stone

No Caption Provided

– Reports are conflicted on whether or not Romancing the Stone will be remade with a new cast or whether or not a sequel with some of the original cast called Racing the Monsoon is in the works. However numerous reports have indicated that something involving the Romancing the Stone franchise is in pre-production.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: It was just plain fun.

Wall Street 2

No Caption Provided

-From what I have heard this movie sounds extremely enticing. Olvier Stone will direct and Michael Douglas will reprise his role as Gordon Gekko. The story takes place in the far fetched year of 2008, where an older Gordon Gekko is trying to warn Wall Street of an impending crisis. Despite being fresh out of his 20 year jail sentence Gekko picks up a student whom he mentors (played by Shia LaBeouf). Filming is rumored to have already have started and the film has a tentative release date of August 2010

What Made it Special the First Time Around: Good acting and an original and interesting premise.

Footloose

No Caption Provided

 - Paramount Pictures has green lit a re-make of Footloose and filming will begin in 2010. Kenny Ortega will direct the film and Chance Crawford (Gossip Girl) will play the male lead. Apparently professional dancer Julianne Hough, from Dancing with the Stars fame, will play Ariel.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: Fuck if I know, I thought the film was terrible the first time around…Maybe it was the music.

Nightmare on Elm Street

No Caption Provided

  – Yup… if you didn’t see this re-make coming with all of these horror re-makes already releasesd then you obviously are dense in the head. Samuel Bayer will direct and Michael Bay will produce…If there is one sign of hope it is that Jackie Earle Haley, Rorschach from the Watchmen film, will play Freddie.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: Gore and films of its kind where popular when the original Nightmare on Elm Street was released.

Dune

No Caption Provided

- Not so much a re-make of David Lych’s take of the novel, but rather it’s going to be another attempt to try and translate the Dune universe into a film. No significant details are know but apparently the project has been green lit and I’m hopeful.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: The source material. Dune is a great book; the film may have had some issues but the book still remains and interesting work that has potential to be turned into an amazing film.

The Karate Kid

No Caption Provided
– The re-make is titled (and I’m not kidding you) The Kung Fu Kid. The film is being produced by Will Smith and (surprisingly) is starring Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. The film is going to come out summer of 2010. If there is one thing I can say that sounds interesting Jackie Chan is said to be playing Mr. Miyagi.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: Like Romancing the Stone, The Karate Kid was just plain fun.

Robocop

No Caption Provided

– It’s rumored to be halted at the moment but I’m still putting this one on the list. MGM refused to answer any questions about the movie other than that it is in fact happening and will come out for summer of 2010. For those that are skeptical here’s something to mull around about, Darren Aronofsky is supposedly the director for the re-make.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: Robocop was badass, and for an action flick in the 1980’s had a surprisingly good story.

The Big Chill

No Caption Provided

– The remake is going to be retitled (though to what is unkown), but Screen Gems is adamant about remaking the baby boomer comedy. Variety has reported that the film is going to be contemporary and star an all African American family.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: It was a comedy...staring baby boomers...set in the 1980's....I really don't see the point in re-making this film.

Arthur

No Caption Provided

(1981 Dudley Moore film)
– It’s a remake that will star Russell Brand as the lead role. Everything else, including the time frame and director are unknown.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: I wouldn’t know because I haven’t seen the film. I hear it’s funny…

The NeverEnding Story

No Caption Provided

– A remake has been confirmed for 2012, and other than that nothing else is known about the re-make.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: The first film was one of the few true Fantasy masterpieces. Everything about the original screams nostalgia for me, with the Where the Wild Things Are movie looking great I’m optimistic about this re-make.

Red Dawn

No Caption Provided

– FFFFUUUUUUUCCCCCKKK! WHY? The Cold war is over!
Well despite my complaints the film will feature a relevant threat to America, and blah blah blah this movie shouldn’t happen and the less I talk about it the better.

What Made it Special the First Time Around: Nothing, the original was terrible even if you watch it with glasses full of fear of communist Russians. And if anyone posts "WOLVERINE!!!" on my blog I'm going to come over to you and cut you.
