Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Review

4
  • 3DS

AlphaDream hits the mark again in terms of combat and dialogue, even if some new additions fall flat.

Across the dozens of Mario games released over the last few decades, no series has given us as much of a glimpse into the weird workings of the Mushroom Kingdom as the Mario & Luigi RPGs. For over ten years, these games have injected personality and humor into characters that, while iconic, were previously little more than yelping, go-karting avatars. Five games into the series, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam invites the star of the Paper Mario series along for the adventure. While the game contains some frustrations that are unique to this entry, its engaging battles and entertaining dialogue ensure that it lives up to its pedigree.

After Bowser's Inside Story, even two Bowsers isn't enough.
After Bowser's Inside Story, even two Bowsers isn't enough.

Naturally, the chaotic setup of Paper Jam comes as a direct result of Luigi being an idiot. After he screws up an attempt to fix a hole in Peach’s castle, he accidentally knocks a storybook off of a shelf. It happens to be the book that contains the entire Paper Mario universe, so the “real world” Mushroom Kingdom is suddenly inhabited by scores of paper goombas, koopa troopas, and Paper Mario himself. Bowser meets Paper Bowser, and their first idea as a duo (after some bickering) involves their knee-jerk instinct to capture both versions of Princess Peach.

Paper Jam sets up this story and gets you on your way in a far speedier fashion than previous games in the series. Dream Team (the most recent release prior to Paper Jam) was especially guilty of forcing players through laborious tutorials without any option for veterans of the series to bypass them. Based on new options this time around, it seems that Nintendo has learned from the past in a variety of ways. Every time that the playable trio (Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario) learns a new attack, Starlow says little more than “Hey, go into the Battle Guide if you want to practice how to do this thing.” You can then practice the sometimes-involved attacks at your leisure with no consequences, or you can test them out in the field and hope to get it right the first time. Either way, you’ll never be forced to sit through a lengthy tutorial sequence upon earning a new attack.

Other systems make Paper Jam feel speedier than its predecessors, as well. During almost any kind of cutscene or dialogue sequence, you can hold the R button to speed up whatever is happening onscreen. Save blocks are no longer present, as you can save anytime you’re not currently in a battle (Dream Team allowed you to save anywhere, but still retained the save block system). Assist mode can be turned on and off with one button during fights, which indicates which Mario brother an enemy is targeting. If you really want to make the game easier on yourself, you can turn on an easy mode that makes your attacks more damaging, your opponent’s weaker, and gives you more time to execute timing-specific attacks. Paper Jam also doesn’t wear out its welcome, as it can be completed in under 30 hours. I love these games, but Dream Team didn’t do nearly enough to justify its 40- to 50-hour playtime.

Paper Mario becomes a lifeline for the brothers during a variety of enemy attacks.
Paper Mario becomes a lifeline for the brothers during a variety of enemy attacks.

If all of these options to make the game easier aren’t enough for you, you’re free to break a good amount of the game entirely if you’re willing to invest in some amiibo backup. Any amiibo that’s based on one of the core Mario characters (Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser), can be tapped to the bottom screen once to activate a variety of bonus cards. Some of these bonuses are minor (guarantee a critical hit, raise defense temporarily, etc.), while others can change the dynamics of an encounter or eliminate the challenge entirely. Early in the game, I had five different amiibo characters that could deal between 48 and 60 damage to every single enemy in every single fight. These actions don’t cost an actual turn, so most of my battles could be bypassed immediately by pressing amiibos to the bottom screen and watching the attack animations until all of the enemies were dead. The amount of damage my amiibos could deal in the final hours of the game became less significant as enemy HP limits grew higher, but they can still make a major impact if you decide to use them.

Despite the involvement of Paper Mario and the rest of the Paper Mushroom Kingdom, this is very much a Mario & Luigi game. Its sense of humor and battle system fit right in with the lineage of AlphaDream’s other Mario RPGs, but the addition of Paper Mario comes with plenty of entertaining gags and gameplay quirks. In the overworld, Paper Mario can squeeze into small cracks, fold into a paper airplane to cross gaps, or roll into a tube and stretch himself out to grab items. During battles, he has a wide variety of attacks that he can perform in tandem with the “3D” brothers, such as folding himself into a boomerang that they can throw at enemies. His entire health system is unique, as well, allowing him to create numerous copies of himself that can add jumps or hammer strikes to his standard attacks.

The Mario & Luigi series has always featured engaging battles, and Paper Jam’s combat is my favorite yet. Having three characters to monitor and attack with hits a sweet spot between the sparseness of two characters and the overwhelming feeling from the four protagonists of Partners in Time. Considering that this is the fifth game in the series, I was glad to see that AlphaDream still has a ton of interesting and fun attacks up their sleeves.

You'll want to get these sections over with as soon as possible.
You'll want to get these sections over with as soon as possible.

Recent games in the series have each featured a gimmick of sorts. Bowser’s Inside Story featured a playable Bowser and giant boss battles that required you to turn the DS sideways. Dream Team had you fighting within Luigi’s dreams on the top screen while manipulating the (sleeping) real deal on the bottom. The quality of those sequences varied, but I felt they both had more to offer than the gimmick battles of Paper Jam. Eschewing the standard turn-based 2D style of the rest of the game, the new papercraft battles put you in control of giant, 3D versions of a variety of Mario characters. Taking out your papercraft rivals in these battles involves timing your own dash and jump attacks while avoiding their projectiles and minions. Controlling these papercraft characters doesn’t feel great, and I felt like I was fighting with the perspective and controls more than I was with my actual enemies.

Making these sections more of a chore are the sequences that come before them. In order to build your papercraft goliaths, you need to deliver a set number of Paper Toads to Toadette. These non-optional sequences are plentiful, and I rarely enjoyed any of them. Rather, I grew increasingly frustrated at the repeated hide-and-seek and stealth minigames that involved wrangling these Toads. These activities would have been totally excusable (perhaps even welcome) if they were relegated to being a side activity that rewarded you with extra XP or gear. As a requirement for beating the game, they become one of the lowest points of Paper Jam.

Papercraft battles and toad collection busywork turned me off of some sections of Paper Jam, but I really enjoyed the majority of the game. It's disappointing that these new additions fall a bit flat, but you'll spend maybe four of your 30 hours with this game engaging with them. After the slow trek through Dream Team, the speedier nature of this game makes it a significant step up. Its dialogue is as hilarious as the series has ever been, even if I was hoping for some more amusing enemy banter (you won’t find anything as memorable as Fawful or the Inside Story version of Bowser here). Most importantly, everyone in the entire Mushroom Kingdom is still inexplicably mean as hell to Luigi. Paper Jam isn’t without some missteps, but the combat is better than ever and the game as a whole hits the charming and humorous beats that it has in the past.

So it's better than Dream Team? Well, that's comforting. Maybe I'll pick it up.

It's a pity that they've still never found a gimmick as good as controlling Bowser in Bowser's Inside Story. Controlling Bowser in the overworld and then essentially doing "dungeons" with Mario & Luigi inside of various parts of Bowser allowed for a lot of inventive ideas and comedy, and none of this dream or papercraft stuff has been quite as clever.

Also I wish they would stop fixating on Paper Mario as a source of papercraft. Sure, Mario could turn into a paper airplane in Paper Mario games, but that really wasn't THE FOCUS. Those first Paper Mario games were good because of the writing and world and battle system, but Sticker Star seemingly dropped most of the story and battle system in favour of getting really 4th-wall-breaking and being like "OH NO IT'S A BIG FAN OR PAIR OF SCISSORS IN A PAPER WORLD, ISN'T THAT CRAAAAAZY" and the use of the Paper Mario characters in M&L: Paper Jam isn't much better because it's still really fixated on the paper aspect of everything.

Also, AlphaDream, please tone down the special attacks. They're like Final Fantasy summon animations. It's gotten really out of hand in Dream Team and Paper Jam.

@bisonhero: Seriously. I'd love to play another "real" Paper Mario game in the mold of the N64 game or Thousand-Year Door. What amazing games those were.

I've felt so mixed about whether to try this. I've always been a HUGE fan of the Mario RPG games, but Dream Team was such a longwinded, slow-paced and hand-holdy SLOG of a game. Sticker Star was a really crummy game too, so I really don't have a lot of faith in this game being very good.

In my mind, the first Mario & Luigi game was the pinnacle of the "series" (they're all different developers, I know). Superstar Saga>Mario RPG>Bowser's Inside Story>Thousand Year Door and I really didn't enjoy the rest all that much honestly. The N64 Paper Mario game, for its unique look, was way too slow-paced and generally quite easy. Super Paper Mario was interesting, but not a roleplaying game. Partners in Time was very linear and pretty disappointing all told.

@bisonhero: That's how I've felt about these games, all of the Mario RPGs. Now they're too up their own rears with gimmicks and mechanics that gum up the flow of the RPG side of things. The last one I really, truly loved was Thousand Year Door. After Sticker Star and Dream Team, I don't ever want to touch another Mario RPG for fear of hours and hours of junk getting in the way of the battle system and clever writing.

I've only played the first two M&L games, but I loved them. It would be nice to get back into them, but this particular entry is probably not for me. Watching that Quick Look gave me all the warning I need about the Paper Toad games and the papercraft battles. Both of those things look absolutely horrid. I know I will end up being frustrated by them. I also don't have any connection to Paper Mario having never played those games, so the fun in that crossover is mostly lost on me. The regular gameplay parts looked great, though, so it's a shame that I'm put off by the other two things.

I can't get over how crazy that press R to fast forward story bits is, though. It looks like it's straight out of an emulator. So weird to see it be an officially supported feature.

The QL of this game looked like a 2 star game at best with all that tedious toad collecting. I guess Dan really likes the combat. I've generally liked the M&L games, and don't care at all for Paper Mario. So, I'm torn on this.

@wolfgame: @hippie_genocide Agree this game didn't look like 4 Stars at all based on both the Quick Look's contents & Dan's actual impressions he shared.

However, it's a Mario game. So long as there's a Mario license, you know what to expect with Dan.

@dougfunk15: I had a quick look at Dan's other Nintendo reviews and so far it's been 2 stars for Kirby, 3 stars for Captain Toad, 3 stars for Hyrule Warriors. So I don't think it's anything like Dan giving Mario games a free pass, the QL was probably just a part of the game that was relatively uninteresting.

It's almost like quicklooks are extremely small views of the total game. Dan seemed to choose a part of the game which would show it's down falls. If the quicklook made the game look too unappealing then stay away from it? The review is meant to show there is some quality to the game as a whole.

I'm looking forward to the combat and battle challenges, but not so much the minigames. Mario & Luigi games have never gotten the minigames to be interesting, but at least they make an attempt to break up combat sections and diversify gameplay.

Being able to speed through dialog will definitely be helpful.

Me too. Paper Mario 1 and TTYD had such a lovable charm to them. The worlds and characters were great and memorable and the writing was fantastic. I didn't pick up Super or Sticker Star because they looked like they relied too much on gimmicks and were getting further and further away from what made the first two awesome.

Yeah, I think the best descriptor for this game is "fine."

It's a Mario-and-Luigi-ass-Mario-and-Luigi game, with everything you've come to expect from that. It still has snappy combat. It still has weird gimmick sections that are hit and miss (yo - some of the paper toad minigames are actually fun! Although it's a bummer they sort of force you into them). It still has a quirky premise and amusing dialogue. It's still kind of irritating that you have to keep doing these button combinations to solve the same simple environmental puzzles over and over. It's exactly what you have come to expect, and it drags less than the most recent game.

I gotta say, the being mean to Luigi stuff does come across as a little weird, though. He used to just be kinda goofy, not like a Mr. Bean level crazy fuck-up. Also it seems like he might be bi-polar? Dude needs some help.

I'm very much in the minority, I'm sure, but I've actually been enjoying the paper Toad stuff. From the QL I thought there would be only one or two variations on a theme, but so far they've impressed me with how they've all managed to be distinguishable from each other.

@osagathegreat: I'm totally with you, actually. I have been even doing the extra hard versions.

The one exception that I ran into so far was the stealth one, which just was poorly designed - but even that gave you 3 continues, so at least it was lenient.

In general, they're super good about not putting you too far back when you fail. On the puzzle one with the toads in surrounded by blocks, you can fail out 3 times on the final puzzle, and if you try again it won't make you do the easy ones over (although you may get a different puzzle this time)

I want them to make another game in the vein of Thousand Year Door. Would buying this be a vote with my dollar towards more Paper Mario stuff in general, and this be a good thing to do? Or would buying this be a vote with my dollar to keep shoehorning Paper Mario into games that are decidedly not where I want him?

I'll guess that's not that much of a deciding factor for me in my purchasing decision, but I really want an new, rad Paper Mario game.

I mean, in Dream Team, they arbitrarily pretend Luigi has narcolepsy and that's just normal everyday Luigi for that whole game, a condition he has never had before or since. They play pretty fast and loose with just how much of a liability Luigi is.

I wish they'd bring back Club Nintendo so I could absolutely roast the really bland, unimaginative games that Nintendo sometimes puts out. I think Club Nintendo existed long enough for me to give Dream Team a thorough blast for having boring writing, being way too long, and completely squandering the insane, Inception-like premise of half the game being set in Luigi's dreams (spoiler: he always just dreams about the environment he's currently sleeping in but everything is palette-swapped).

Yeah, starting the quick look on the worst part and lingering on it for so long kind of created a really negative vibe that's confusing for people who were watching the video. I get Dan's thought process behind starting with the thing that he dislikes the most about the game, especially in a franchise as long running as Mario and Luigi where people already know what's up for the most part, but it just doesn't work when you're doing this with a game that you, overall, want to convey a positive impression of.

I'm glad Nintendo is still putting these games out and seemingly making a genuine effort to make them good. I wish they'd do the same for Paper Mario.

I'm about 12 hours in. I'm in agreement with Dan on this one, it's the best battle system of any of the games thus far. The addition of Paper Mario is awesome, plus the speedier pace is much appreciated. I actually don't think the Paper Craft battles control poorly, but they're pretty annoying. Collecting Toads is getting annoying too but they change up the type of mini-game enough to make it interesting.

@osagathegreat: Yeah i had the same feeling until I realized that once you nail the first hit on the three-hammer thing, the block won't run into you. So you really just need to get the timing on that first hit

Am I the only one who thinks Mario RPG for the SNES was the best one? Maybe my nostalgia is playing into it.

Partly nostalgia but it is a good game that surprisingly still holds up well but Paper Mario Thousand Year Door probably tops all of the RPG like Mario games out there with Bowser's Inside Story topping the Mario & Luigi franchise.

I'm liking this game a whole lot but as Dan said in the QL this is mainly a Mario & Luigi game through and through with some Paper Mario aesthetics thrown in. I really wish it had more Paper Mario elements such as the multiple characters you meet throughout the game like in the first two Paper Mario games.

The QL left a lot of people with a bad taste, but good on Dan for showing off the irritating bits just as well. #noshill

I also tire of minigames, but the combat system is fundamentally the biggest one, and it seems solid.

Also I still need to finish up Super Paper Mario. -.-

oh it got by with a 4. I was expecting a 3 or so based on the quick look. Glad you enjoyed it Dan, I may check it out at some point in future

yeah i think Dan was being a little generous; Brad, and by extension myself, seemed really unsold by what was shown
