Giant Bombcast 597: Watering a Plastic Succulent

GameSpot's Lucy James and Tamoor Hussain stop by to discuss coming to America, third-person peeing, all the news out of Gamescom, being grumpy about Overwatch, and a textbook example of conflict resolution.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

As a semi-recent immigrant to the US. I feel Lucy's pain about Sony not able to migrate my PSN account. I'm forced to renew my PSN+ account via my UK card. :(

I was really hoping Lucy would talk about her Fire Emblem experience..
And I hear "grow up" all the time in Canada.

@ogjbizz: Doubles are definitely a thing in Smash though.

As an Englishman who emigrated to the US a couple of years ago (London to Houston), I can relate a bit to some of the things the guests are saying about the transition. If they are reading these comments let me reassure them that while the cultural variations will continue to pop up and surprise you (unavoidable and will probably continue to happen for a long time) the best way to approach it is to just roll with the weirdness and allow yourself to adapt and assimilate (especially the vocabulary.... American English is the 'correct' English while in the USA. We are the ones with the funny accents and phrases not them!).

Another thing I've seen with fellow expats is that there can be a degree of caché to being the English person in the room... but it doesn't take too long to wear that out (or even start counting against you) if you make too much of a show of it. My American wife refers to this kind performative obnoxiousness as 'Hugh Grant-ing' and she's right... I have seen some of the English people I've met over here putting it on for effect and I think less of them for it. Don't fall into the trap! ;)

I'm a fan of hearing English accents, but this got to be a bit too much with Jeff and Ben not being there, and Brad not piping up enough to balance the guests, who have their own podcast that we could choose to listen to. Not bad guests, but I think this episode needed a bit of GB balance.

Boy, these Witcher takes are sure getting old from people who played on low difficulty settings, didn’t engage with the majority of the game’s unique mechanics, and then say that playing the game was the worst part of playing the game.

But it is though?

Really enjoying the rotating cast of Bombcast guests during these last few weeks of Bomcasts. It'll be cool to have Jeff back, eventually. But I'd also take more guests more often.

This has been the case since the Bombcast has been live. The ads are inserted into the podcast live to help with the show's editing.

The only non-ad choice for the Bombcast is the premium audio version I believe. If you wanna watch the live video on-demand, you'll get the ad reads.

@scrollcourier: I played at higher difficulty settings and made, like, four potions. It was a mindless hack and slash...that I loved and played for 200+ hours. But the combat was never better than meh.

@tricerarock: The thing about quicklooks is that I typically don't know enough about the game being quicklooked to know if the information i'm getting is good. A game like Ovewatch however is something that I have hundreds of hours played in, and a pretty solid knowledge of the pro-scene, so "bad info" sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

It sometimes makes me wonder though, if uninformed opinions are being pushed as fact in one game, is that the case with every game they discuss?

This is almost certainly the case. When they get into nitty gritty balance stuff, like they did with Overwatch in this episode, their opinions are generally not super well informed. Which is a natural consequence of how they cover games. They generally play a wide swath of games and then quickly move on, whereas most people probably pick up a few games and then get super into them.

Some of their takes are also kind of strange and misleading. Brad said "people were kind of mixed" on Dragon Quest 11. In actuality, it reviewed exceptionally well, and many people claim it's one of the best (if not the best) game in the series.

@ahifi: they certainly seem to have a London air about them considering none of the things they said bout the accent is nothing but few general catch phrases which is rather dissapointing. I guess for Americans, queen English is foreign enough for them. As a Brummie, I have a funny image of Brad trying to parse through our ugly accent while Jeff just repeats 'gobbet' over and over again.

As a fellow Muslim, Tamoor should just say " init" and " he goes" when he talks just to fuck with thier head. It would be funny innit?

This was such a great Bombcast, I absolutely loved the guests. And so much talk about games! It was great to hear some in depth talk about a few games even if they aren't games I typically play. Brad was amazing as the host too.

Both guests were genuine and honest about their thoughts on games, even if they aren't "correct" (whatever that means in terms of years old game meta) as some of the other comments have pointed out. Much more enjoyable than Ben's ironically detached attitude or Jason's seemingly unwillingness to talk about a game for more than 45 seconds. Jason, talk more about the stuff you play! Ben, I'm sorry but I think whatever content farm you joked about working at before has given you internet brain.

Has anybody checked out Gamespot After Dark yet? I listened to Episode 2 and it was pretty good for a new show.

Not to be rude to guests, but competitive smash is always 1v1. It's been that way for idk...a decade. Also, I'm kinda tired of the smash isn't a fighting game thing. It has footsies, zoning, guard, guard that can be broken (stun), frame data that matters, etc. It's a fighting game.

Everyone can have an opinion, but I found that aside and the underlying logic as kinda CRAZY. Like I can even be generous and grant the comment (given the Overwatch talk) is about having more than two forces in opposition (ie teams). But as a person that grew up on arena shooters and RTS, chaotic mass attacks between upwards of dozens of people is how I like my competitive multiplayer.

Then of course I might have just been a crazy old man with my 20 year old memories a few years ago except for a little niche genre that popped up called Battle Royale. Like I wonder if this is an age thing and that's why maybe PUBG grabbed a hold on the older Bombcast team (and folks like Will Smith) and maybe the younger cast coming in just don't connect with that kind of multiplayer. But I found the comment literally a crazy thing to say.

Other people have microphones! Maybe they have views and opinions on subjects and perhaps a single person doesn’t need to treat this like an interview show? I found this episode really hard to listen to.

Great episode. I like when there are new guests, that shakes things up a bit. I find that in the last few months the show has stagnated a bit and is much better with Rorie or other guests present.

@fishriot: I have experienced a bit of that with the guys, but not much. I was a little annoyed that Ion Maiden and Dusk were kind of shrugged off here (especially Dusk...I think it has one of the best fps campaigns of all time). It usually doesn't bother me all that much. My tastes don't really fall in line too much with any of the Bombsters or Beasties.

I haven't thought about Dot Dot Dot: A Review By Axman13 since middle school. Damn.

Also @ogjbizz at least here on UT campus plenty of competitive smash players do duos from time to time, even in tournament-style games. Maybe they don't do it in "real" competition but it definitely happens

I really like the guests, but that was one of the clueless talks about Overwatch I've ever seen.

Role-lock increased the number of heroes variety. Zarya is not at all a "poor girl" like he said, she is at his best with shields, that is exactly the meta (like he complained), you just have to know-how. I came back to the game about a month ago and it's at the best place it has ever been, Sigma was a great addition. Bringing the number of heroes high enough so counters feel more useful and clear. If Zarya gets a disengage you might just shut down the servers then.

One more thing: If there's a thing in the world that happens a ton, is the Overwatch devs listening to fans. Except if your complain is delusional.

I don’t like the guest dude. He gets off on a bad start with his British slang story, which turns out to be 1 slang, 1 in joke and 1 terribly condescending insult said barely ironically, and then he goes off on Overwatch for 20 minutes in a Reddit style rant just saying things into a mic without much input from the GB Regulars on the pod. I like Overwatch a lot, but I don’t need angry Reddit posts about it on the bombcast.

This feels very off brand and it’s taking me a while to get through it. Shame that Ben was busy pooping, I bet he would’ve helped a lot, especially the part where dude said he couldn’t take Smash seriously because theres more than 2 players at a time (???) and no one questioned that.

Really fun show, enjoyed the in-depth talk about games I don't hear much about on GB.

I have no idea what people in this community want from guests anymore. Yes, Tamoor talked more than everyone else, but it's not like he was cutting people off to do so. He simply gave good, thoughtful, detailed answers to a wide range of game and non-game topics that Brad served up to him. What's the foul?
