I've been watching the series for the first time along with Dan and Vinny, and it has made movies I wouldn't normally check out a lot of fun. After the F&F movies are finished, PLEASE make these a regular weekly podcast. Each of you could pick a movie on alternating weeks, you could have guests stop by and choose a movie, or even have the community pick them once in awhile.

Yeah, the comments about Lucas Black doing a bad accent are harsh, considering THAT'S HIS NATURAL ACCENT. Always liked the dude. Shame he just seemed to get cast off after Tokyo Drift save for his tiny reprisal later. Would have loved him to join the "family".

It was this feature starting that made me watch this movie for the first time.

Even with the GB guys commentary it's pretty unbearable. Looking forward to next weeks though as I watched Fast 4 recently and thought it was all right. Curious to see why Alex is so down on that.

Fun fact: The techie girl on their team is played by Keiko Kitagawa, who started out playing Sailor Mars on the live action Sailor Moon TV show, and went on to become a pretty famous actress in Japan.

@jtb123: it's the worst one after the second movie, because it's terrible, terrible DRUG TUNNELS serious plot attempts. It's not quite as wild as the later movies but not as stupid goofy as the earlier ones.

So one thing I was never quite able to buy into in this movie was Sean that is in so much trouble in America for street racing that he has to get shipped out to Japan to avoid juvie but he randomly ends up at a high school where the entire student body is into street racing, they all own drift capable cars, the most stereotypical black teen ever just happens to go there and happens to get him into the local street racing scene, and the best drifter in Tokyo who is also Yakuza just happens to go to that school and immediately becomes Sean's nemesis. It's stupid that I have no problem with F&F dropping cars out of planes, driving them through skyscrapers, or chasing an airplane down a 30 mile airstrip but Sean going to Drift High completely by accident elicits "Oh come on now." Still, the work this franchise did in later movies to sync up the timeline is amazing. Damn you Jason Statham!

I'm hearing a lot of stuff on this about Lucas Black. Sad to say he actually talks like that in real life and he's from Alabama.

This movie was not as good as I remember it being at all. The best is Vinny at the end of the last two movies just going "So 1 thing happened right?" and he's right on. Killed me both times.

I have only seen the first movie when it came out and Tokyo Drift and so far the first movie is by far the best of these three I think. I enjoy bits of this movie cause of basically Japan, some goofy moments, and some cool cinematography.

Also did not remember the "Why do I never c u drift?" thing which rules.

Yeah pretty funny. I've lived in the South and that's the regional accent.

Listening to Jeff trying to explain drifting is kind of killing me. Good to know he knows he screwed it up. But if anyone's curious, here's a simplified explanation.

You can only properly drift a rear-wheel drive car. Front-wheel drive cars can't drift because you need the rear wheels to lose traction and control the slide. Since the front wheels pull the car forward and the rear wheels are free wheeling, you can't lose traction on the rear wheels the way you need to. You need power to the wheels to keep them spinning, otherwise they'll just slow down and gain traction again.

AWD cars are hard to drift because the traction from the front wheels will pull the car forward and help correct the rear wheels. To put it simply, front wheel drive causes understeer (vehicle doesn't turn enough) while rear wheel drive causes oversteer (vehicle turns too much, sideways). Drifting requires oversteer. It's essentially a controlled oversteer.

There's much more that goes into starting and controlling a drift, but man, that's just too much to get into. Keiichi Tsuchiya, the real Drift King, has videos about it on YouTube.

Muscle cars are the original drifters. Just need to a proper suspension set-up and tires. While a Mustang with a Skyline engine was built for the movie, the movie was shot using a Mustang with a modern V8. It's all in the set-up.

A proper drift is initiated by upsetting the balance of the car, as opposed to a power drift/slide, which is initiated by having so much torque that the tires break traction from hard acceleration.

Eh, who cares...

Yeah Jeff talking drift cars is really tough to hear if you're a car guy but it's ok. RWD and gobs of power make a drift car. They won't need to talk about the cars as much in the future movies. Really enjoying these.

The RB26 swap to the Mustang is just symbolism of Sean and the American and Japanese fusion. Tokyo Drift is fantastic.

Yeah, agreed. At least vinny eventually figured it out! Haha. It's FINE that you guys aren't super technically knowledgeable about cars, just don't pretend to be.

The RB26 swap is also quite technically possible. Most of the pre-R34 skylines were actually rear-wheel drive, the only exception being the GTRs. so the swap is actually quite concieveable. You'd just have to fabricate mounting points for the engine and transmission.

Not that this is in any way, shape, or form still a 65 mustang, but since were' talking mustangs and swaps, it's worth a mention.

I also thought that Lucas Black's artificial accent in this movie was ridiculous. Only a decade later when I saw him on NCIS: New Orleans did I figure out it's just his normal manner of speaking.

It really seemed even more jarring in Tokyo, it felt like just an overemphasis of the fish out of water idea.

Tokyo Drift if the only Fast and the Furious Movie I ever saw, in the basement of a cabin on CTR TV from the 80s in winter with no heat.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this but the Hulk car was for years in front of the Hulk Coaster at Islands of Adventure in Orlando. I used to walk by it every day on the way to work. Given that it is a Universal theme park, that would mean the studio kept control of it. I'm not sure if it still there since they recently redid that Coaster, but they are opening a new Fast and Furious ride over at the Universal Studios Park, so maybe they have moved it over there.

I don't really get what's supposed to be the thing with Tokyo Drift.

It's kind of boring. There's little drive or purpose. The main character is an anonymous dumbo haphazardly traversing a meandering plot. There's barely any good action in the thing. It's mostly bad drama.

The majority of it feels both floaty and fleeting. If it wasn't for Han anchoring it, this movie would be adrift.

I think I may actually prefer 2 Fast 2 Furious.

This is the first time I have ever seen Tokyo Drift and honestly, of the ones I have seen, I think this is comfortably my least favourite film in the series. The protagonist is a charisma vacuum, the plot is kinda directionless and rehashes elements from the previous films too closely (characters clashing over a girl, working for a new crew to repay a debt, etc.), and on the back of having just watched 2 Fast it clearly lacks some of the funny dumb moments which that movie has ("ejecto seato cuz!", electronic car harpoons, car jumping over a car while going over a raised bridge). Yeah 2 Fast is a "bad" movie but that's what makes it "good" in a way.

That being said, Han is cool and it does have a certain styyyyyyle thanks to an overall better production quality but other than that I feel like it is mostly forgettable even if in some ways is it "better" than the previous two films in the series. I have seen the two most recent films but I am yet to watch 4 and that is meant to be the last outright bad film in the series so maybe that can top this.

How do they think that's a British accent?

Plus I've got a sneaking suspicion that Dan thinks AWD cars steer with all wheels.

Need for Speed Carbon is pretty much the videogame adaptation of Tokyo Drift even down to the perilous moonlit drift mountain and the year it came out.

@madeppymage: I believe Rhys Millen did a ton of the drifting as well. Rhys is actually on the plane in the shot where Lucas Black is traveling in Japan. Knowing a lot about cars and racing and watching this was painful.

Holy cow, I had no idea the bully was the kid from Home Improvement.

This is genuinely a great film though, so much better than it as any right to be. Still my favourite in the series.
