I have no attachment to Rorie, but having "feels" be one of the first things I hear from him does not endear him to me.

Hope Dave visits often as he was the GB crew I probably had the most similar tastes in most games & best of luck to him. Great to see Rorie again :).

@doomguitar: Giantbomb as fans knew them died the moment they signed with CBSi. Don't get me wrong, I know and understand why they did it. I just know how these things end up. Too bad many of the members don't, but will find out in the next couple of years or so. Then again, I could be wrong.

Wow it's Rorie! I hardly recognize him. Good to see him back around the crew.

I have no evidence of this, but I'm pretty confident his "illness" is just a made-up excuse to be messed up on cough medicine while at work. At least that's the one I use.

edit: I'm having a similar problem with Netflix on this PC, regardless of which browser I use, as Brad is having with Steam. The interface and graphics and everything shows up fine, but the actual content never downloads. Every other device on the network can use it just fine. It also started a few weeks ago, and I'm also using Win7 with an EVGA card. I wonder if there's some sort of correlation. Like a Windows update screwed something up, or whatever. I guess I'll read through these comments to see if somebody found something.

Brad, if you have any game controller plugged in, unplug it. I had a similar problem and tried unplugging my Microsoft 360 controller that I had on my PC. Problem went away. Worth a try.

• People should send those old floppies and games to Brewster Kahle and Archive.org - to people who actually upload the code to eternal archives, for everyone to research, instead sending it to Jeff, who has no time nor cares to properly archive his or any games? Abandonware has a home online.

As it's stalling when it's checking for free memory and is writing temp data to the harddrive? I say it's either window's or steams fault.

It could either be a UAC setting (try turning that off completely), try removing the cache files already set up by steam (as some people already suggested in the thread), or you just need to erase every trace of steam on that machine before you reinstall it again.

Yeah, I kinda wish more people knew about the efforts of archive.org and the Software Preservation Foundation. The 5.25" floppies were supposed to have about an 20 year life span, so most of them are on the brink of deterioration right now, but there still is a chance to recover and archive that data.

Can't say Jeff is the worst person to take care of the floppies though, he seems to have an active interest in making backups of his carts at least, and I'd expect he probably makes dumps of his C64 games too, so unless the floppies have already rot beyond repair, I guess he'll probably make backups of them himself. Though, obviously it's preferable that stuff ends up at organizations focused on preserving old software rather than private collectors..

Now I'm really looking forward to the Dark Souls 2 Quick Look.

Steam: I got that message for the first time the other day installing the Cave, but it ultimately resolved itself after a few minutes. "Converting existing game" looks like something new that might be related to the Linux release (i.e., new messaging directed at multi-PC, low-bandwidth homes that would try to do things like copy a game directly between two different operating systems).

Most likely this is due to inadequate testing on Steam's part and will ultimately rectify itself, but if you want to nudge it along:

1. Have Steam rebuild itself, as suggested by others, by deleting the directory and relaunching, or doing it the clean way as recommended by steam with a bunch of reboots in between.

2. Toggle between the beta and non-beta releases and rebuild after that.

3. It's not a networking issue because you're all sharing a connection, and also the message clearly indicates it thinks there's an existing installation. Even so, it would be prudent to have someone on staff set up a mobile hotspot / tethering on their phone so you can eliminate networking concerns in the future.

4. Try running as different users. By this I mean both as a local administrator, and/or a different steam user.

5. Sometimes weirdness happens when a different user installs something than is actually going to use it due to Windows folder permissioning, especially in the default Program Files folders. Pull up the folder security options from properties for the parent Steam folder and add "Everyone" to the list, and grant "Everyone" full rights. (Obviously not the highest security option, but it will help troubleshoot permissioning weirdness.)

No idea if this is going to get read...but I hit the EXACT same issue. Turned out my steam was stuck downloading an update to itself. I had been ignoring the update prompt that never kicked off the steam update for a few days...and then found out I could not install games.

To clear the update I signed up for a Steam Beta, and then got out of it. Signing up for the beta requed the Steam update...and it ran finally.

It really stinks that Dave had to leave, but Rorie returning to Giant Bomb is awesome!

If Rorie has anytime to review games, will he bring back his 5 puppy rating system and present a puppy video after a review is over?
