Giant Bombcast 498: Cat Spanker’s Alley

This week it’s hard to talk about anything besides Destiny 2, but we also touch on Fortnite’s Battlegrounds, the second coming of the NES Classic, bad YouTube behavior, worthless video game systems, Mario’s embrace of the bourgeoisie, and Kinects in casinos.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

All the mysticism is in the adventures and the post story missions. The story is unoriginal, but is told well and I'm fine with that as a hardcore destiny player.

Thanks for taking time out to get real about things that are just unacceptable. I've always appreciated GB's attitude on these issues.

I'm guessing you haven't heard about the hoopla about the Alt-right emblem on an in-game armpiece you find in Dentiny 2.

Destiny is great! Finished the campaign last night on one of my characters just in time to squeeze the Nightfall in. Now getting into the post-campaign quest chains and there's some really good mini-tales and intrigue in those.

Cat Spanker's Alley?

Besides listening to this myself, I put this on to entertain the cats, (and also pretend someone's home) when I go grocery shopping. Hope I don't find the cats hiding under the bed, as they are wont to do in times of perceived danger, when I come home.

Cat Vomit of disgust wont be welcomed, either...

I think part of the appeal of PUBG is that it taps into the primal "kill or be killed" part of the brain. Apparently in that state, PEWDIEPIE thought it was okay to use a forbidden word against someone his primal brain thought was an "enemy".

It's not okay, but I think it's necessary to state why his brain went that way.

Don't worry Brad, no one will ever think you were harsh on Destiny 2 during this podcast. You made so many excuses the Supreme Court itself would be convinced to vote it game of the year.

I'm overseas in Japan and can't listen to the whole podcast until I'm back. I had sent in an email, which I assume wasn't read because it wasn't that interesting, but if it was, could someone give me the timestamp? I had a few questions about the Super Famicom.

What Felix said was bad. But his response was at least mature.

Loading Video...

He used a bad word, sure. But I still think we should be careful about just labeling someone a racist because of it. Judging the whole person based on a word said in the heat of the moment on a live stream? I'm not defending what he did. He should obviously not have said it. But just tossing the racist label out there is the easy way out. The world is a bit more nuanced. And not that black and white. Good people, who are not racist, can say and do stupid shit at times. And Felix has done plenty of good in how much he has given to charity alone. And seeming like a genuine good guy for the years I've watched him.

@bendik_solbakken: the "easy way out" is defending someone who doesn't need your defense and pretending like this isn't a pattern of behavior from this dude over the years. Maybe he's not a racist but the fact that that word was anywhere near the tip of his tongue at any point shows that there's something wrong with him that a "whoops sorry lol" won't fix.

Guys who pay people to hold up signs saying "Death To All Jews" are not genuine good guys. There is no nuance for "Death To All Jews." Guys who reach for racial slurs because they're mad are not genuine good guys. There is no nuance for that racial slur.

"Genuine good guys" like that are anti-Semites. "Genuine good guys" like that are racists. Those are bad guys. (You might recall that many of our grandparents, and many of our great-great-great-grandparents, fought a war to dirtnap both kinds of "genuine good guy".) Perhaps, with introspection and some growing up, they can stop being "genuine good guys" and be basically decent human beings through actually righting some of their wrongs. But they are bad guys and "genuine good guy" PewDiePie in particular has shown a real good track record of continuing to be a bad guy regardless of what happens to him.

PewDiePie hasn't done anything to merit sympathy or defense. But maybe the people downrange of the nasty crap deployed by the spoiled-rich Death To All Jews kid do deserve a little consideration.

It had nothing to do with his own beliefs. Sure, you can argue it was in bad taste. You might not have liked it. But calling him an racist and anti-Semite is just not fair nor true.

@bendik_solbakken Maybe I'm old fashioned, but jump cuts in an apology video? Just rubs me the wrong way I guess.

Anyway, definitely a decently contrite statement. As to "judging", agreed, it's not particularly important to decide whether he is a racist or just plays one on Youtube. Contrary to what the internet would have us believe, we as a society do not need to reach some consensus on him and everyone can individually just decide what they think of him / his actions and act accordingly. I'll continue to ignore him. Personally I think the people who defend him deserve more scorn (or pity?) anyway.

===

Oh hey, did you guys know Destiny 2 came out? It'll be interesting to see how hard Brad pushes it come GOTY time! I skipped the first one, but am seriously tempted to pick this one up on PC given the general enthusiasm. My only reservation is that it sounds potentially light on interesting content (I *do* tend to lean towards story-heavy games...)

@bendik_solbakken: He may not be racist, none of us can know for sure (although things seems to point to him being one). What I do know for sure is that he is an immature piece of garbage. He is trash. Let's just say I wouldn't mind it if his whole channel and career ended and he got all his fame and fortune stripped away from him because he certainly has not earned any of it. He should go back to working at a hot dog stand.

@afashionablehat: The "Death to all Jews" video is easy to defend because it was a joke and people know the intent. People who make Jew jokes aren't anti-semites. People can be offended if they want to or can think it's a bad joke, but they shouldn't ignore the context.

This more recent video wasn't scripted and is easier to see as racist because he said it out of anger.

I'm brand new to Destiny and MMOs with this game and BOY they could stand to explain all the terms they use better. Even the social media advert they aimed at new players that flashes a bunch of 'why you should play Destiny' slides immediately gets to '3 player strikes' and I'm like ok, so... what is a strike? What is a raid?

Even when selling the game to new players they are using terms that only people who play Destiny would know. It's impenetrable.

It's not okay, but "I think it's necessary to state why his brain went that way."

No offense to you, but I am tired of this half excuse. It's important to state that your brain, when in said primal state, uses words and phrases (or pure gibberish) that you would regularly use and are accustomed to saying. I myself have used hateful speech in the past when I was angry and when they were more socially acceptable to use. I used to use a homophobic slur on a regular basis back in the 90's, the same one that Ryan Davis profusely apologized for using on this very site. When I grew up and I realized it was a hateful and demeaning word to use I learned to stop saying it and it no longer shows up in my regular vocabulary; thus preventing it from showing up in my angry, or primal, state vocabulary as well. To this day I am still not proud of words I used when I was younger, but I made the effort to change. The deeper issue is that PDP needs to stop using hateful speech in his normal day-to-day life and it will prevent this type of thing happening. People can say and do dumb things and be forgiven, but when there's a clear progression and escalation of these events happening there's not a lot left to do but admonish him at every turn. This isn't a single case of "Oh whatever, he said a bad word. He apologized, let it go", there's a clear through line to his words and his actions at this point and we all need to stop pretending otherwise.

I don't see the point of bringing up the Pewdiepie thing into Giant Bomb, since that was related to YouTube drama and not directly related to videogames, but here we are.

What Felix said was bad. But his response was at least mature.

This. I'm not a fan of him and I actually dislike his videos. Obviously he shouldn't have said what he said, but easily and freely tossing around words like "racist", "fascist" or "anti-semite" for such minor mistakes like this is just giving less weight and importance to the actual awful racists out there doing terrible things. At least that's how I see it. If he was genuinely a "bad guy" there would probably be a lot more things going against him way before this happened and no way he would donate money like he does.

@chicken008: In what fucking insane universe is making a death to all jews joke easy to defend

Because he wasn't actually wishing death to all jews nor joking about it? Sure it could be considered bad taste for some, but he was just trying to see how far those sign guys would go just for money. His whole point with that was showing that saying "death to all jews" is a bad thing but they said it anyway. The actual "joke" was that the guys will say anything if you pay them. Also that phrase was pretty much just an old dead meme by the time he used it.

The open course stuff in the new Hot Shots is actually really good for getting better at the courses (especially before entering higher rank tournaments) since they tend to get more unforgiving and there are penalties for not staying consistent.

Also, every day one of the courses front or back nine will have a bonus active on it, so one of the holes is lined with coins, an item, balls, gems, and turf war warp tokens, and getting a birdie or better will trigger a shower of coins that shoot up out of the hole (you can push L3 and pop out of your shot at any time to run around or drive your cart, pushing the touch pad with bring up a blimp view of the course and you can see other people playing there shots).

Submitting a completed nine-hole scorecard will enter you in to the global rankings for that day and with whatever modifiers were on, as well as a provisional ranking between you and nine other players. The following day you receive coins and an item depending on what percentile you ended up in from D rank up to S.

For $50 this game is has a ton of content and it's actually fun and relaxing. The possibilities for cameos of other Sony characters is exciting. We're already starting to see some really cool created characters too. From Link, Vault Boy, Master Roshi & Android 18, to Bobby Hill, Tina from Bob's Burgers, Voldemort, Harry Potter, a couple different Marios, Darth Maul, Heisenberg, the Joker, and a giant pink kitty.

The Destiny talk is weird to me, and I'm a person who roasted the first game nearly non-stop but enjoy the changes in two. Jeff sometimes has some pull on him where anytime he says something good about the game he has to try and backbite it a second later. You cannot say Destiny 2 had a "worse story than Destiny 1" when Destiny 1 had no story...you had set pieces you quickly ran through. The public events never had any mystery to them as once you do them the first time you know exactly what you're in for, mostly.

I also disagree with Brad's assertion that they pull you to the next area too quickly. They do no such thing. They simply say, after you do the main story quests at a location, "Now go and do this on this planetoid" while also giving you 4-7 side quests as well as having all the "secret" stuff marked on the map.

I think the game still controls very well and feels fun but I hate how useless the melee combat is in crucible and I think that they give you too many exotics too soon...but the same thing happens in Diablo 3 now where you're getting orange tiered looks pretty early on and fairly regularly.

I also only came across 2 "wise cracking robots", and one of them is only in one section of the game. Jeff's complaints about Failsafe and Cayde-6 are nothing more than the Jeff Gerstmann hyperbole train leaving the station.

The amount of people in the Giant Bomb community who seemingly live to hear complaints about Bungie and Destiny is glaring.

The PewDiePie thing is kind of over and done with. He said something stupid and ignorant in the heat of the moment, in anger, and he's since apologized for it before the podcast even went up. Had he not, maybe it would be worth noting but he did. The only thing that should be brought up is how the "walking-sim" developers (yes, I'm being facetious on purpose) threatened to abuse a legal action (DMCA) over someone they are upset with who said a word they didn't like (which cracks me up, since the guy who made the threat was white). The developer also admitted that PewDiePie made THEM money when he plays their games and he even tried saying PDP made money "off of them" (which makes you wonder how they really feel about people like Giant Bomb) so the guy just wanted to get pissy about YouTubers and he found an easy out for that. Clearly he's wanting to file DMCA takedowns quite a bit but knew he couldn't get away with it.

@cheebahh: Brad criticizes some stuff about Destiny 2 in there. Not sure what podcast you listened to. He also criticized Destiny 1 some as well. But hey, he likes the game...and people who like a game tend to talk about stuff they enjoy about it.

Hello folks. I'm a person partly responsible of the Tiny Tina character( as a concept artist). I ask you to please measure your hyperbole a bit. I realize you are not fond of the character...been a GB fan for many years now and I happily swallowed that pill.

But in the topic of how much of an influence you are, people will look at your joke and take it seriously. I think your brand of humour IS and can be better than simply shitting on things unfairly for comedic effect.

Thank you.

The Ghost is probably the best robit in Destiny 2, followed by the weaponsmith in the Tower. Cayde is fine. And then there's Failsafe. It would have worked if it didn't have its "attitude" personality. That was a dealbreaker for me. It's a shame because Failsafe has the best story quests out of the four.

@indigozeal: huh? If they thought money didn't matter then the developer wouldn't have included it in at least 3-4 of the 6-7 tweets they made.

I can say I've had ZERO issues dealing with "children" who want to "scream ignorant shit at people" for the last several years. PUBG is the only one I've heard it in and when I switch chat to "team only" it went away immediately.

Most people on PC are playing in private discord servers. Most people playing online on console are playing in a party. This is no longer a big deal. Hell, most people aren't even plugging their mics in to talk.

Even the people on the Bombcast have mentioned, several times, that you never really hear anyone talking online in games anymore.

Also based on your previous comments you don't agree that someone can make an off color joke without being a racist, homophobe, islamaphobe, etc-phobe. I bet George Carlin and most comics would make you roll over if you actually think that, lmfao.

PDP dropped the N-bomb? Shouldn't suprise people, look at his early stuff. (Cringe)

The Campo Santo response is the real part of this story imo.

Taken from the Campo Santo website, the about Firewatch section:

"Can I stream this game? Can I make money off of those streams?

Yes. We love that people stream and share their experiences in the game. You are free to monetize your videos as well."

There was a lawyer on twitch that made it sound like a dmca court case would fall in PDP's favor because of the implied consent statement santo put out. The best they could do would be to revoke his ability to make content featuring the game moving forward aka a revocation of their implied consent.

Will probably make game companies think twice about blanket statements like that :/

If your best defense for these jokes is "hey, some comics in the '90s did it!", maybe you need to rethink your priorities.
