I... never even thought of this but it must've actually been that way, at least on huge ships of the line. And I thought my job was stressful. Yeesh.

I could be totally wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the "helmsman" (the bloke at the wheel) usually wasn't actually the captain of the ship. At least not with large ships? Plus with sails etc., the rudder was only a part of steering the whole ship, so the skipper would yell out their orders and everyone would have to do their own parts to make it go in the right direction.

Announced 2 years ago, and it still seems like an early access game that'll never come out. I don't know what they're talking about when they say it seems cool and like there's potential for doing cool stuff, because they didn't do anything in this video. Not to mention that large parts of it look like a mid-gen 360 game.

@kevino13: Rare has been pretty transparent with the development of the game.

As someone who doesn't even have an xbox [mostly pc here] something about this is making me want to buy one.... but I need to see more of this game... not sure enough about what you do in it and how much it requires a group of friends [of which I have none].

Glad to see this vid about to watch!

its on PC too

I would love to play this with a group of friends. That McElroy/Austin demo those three had sounded hilarious.

This looks neat, but several things have written it off my list entirely.

A: Windows 10 app store exclusivity

B: Monetization is sure to be abysmal

C: The level of teamwork it looks like this requires seems like PUGs would be amazingly awful meaning a steady playgroup would be required.

I mean I think it's not that much of a stretch to understand why people were disappointed despite your own enjoyment of the game.

It's unfortunate that there's so much misunderstanding in this video. Some corrections: Smaller ships have been confirmed and I'm pretty sure they've said no levels. Progression is based on customization for you and your ship. The UI is minimalist on purpose to avoid clutter and there are multiple outposts to return treasure to and interact with NPC's.

Rare have been really open about the game and there's a lot of information in the (semi) monthly podcasts and their YouTube channel. Maybe I've just been paying too much attention to the game.

Here's a few links from the official Sea of Thieves forum to get interested people up to speed about the game: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/11528/10-common-questions-answered

https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/1658/sea-of-thieves-your-first-port-of-call

(Copy and pasted this comment I made on YouTube that isn't showing up for some reason. Thought some people might enjoy the info.)

If you copy/paste links into YouTube comments they often get marked as Spam and hidden until someone goes through and reviews them. This rarely happens super-quickly, though.

I thought this might be the case, but it's the first time I've ever posted a comment on YouTube so I wasn't sure. Thanks for confirmation. :)

I hope that you and the rest of the crew check out those links if you're genuinely interested in the game. They cover a lot of your questions and concerns like progression, structure, goals and ability to play solo (you can do it, but you're in the same shared world as other pirates so you'll need to stay even more alert).

@brad@rorie@jeff For reference, the current design around the game is that it is "Run based". Each player starts with a unique map, and the goal is to find all of that treasure and sell the loot. There are chances the chests you find may contain another map or two. I think there's an end of a "voyage" or something after finding all 4+ sets of treasure, it's been a few weeks since I've played.

Last time I played the vendors weren't enabled yet either, but I do think you're supposed to be able to upgrade your current ship. It's only for your current run, though, I'd bet.

This seems like it'll make for a fun 3-4 nights of playing with friends until real life intercedes and we never manage to get a full group together again, and end up completely forgetting its existence within a few months.

Seems like it could be cool for people who regularly play games with a group of friends though!

Love the look of the game and the ship stuff seems cool, but everything around it seems like a bad early access game. Hopefully it shapes up a little better.

This, hard to feel sorry for people let down by that game, anyone that followed the press for it or watched videos knew what they were getting into 100%. This game seems like it has potential, and the devs aren't coming out saying its an infinitely expanding ocean with millions of islands lol. Rare makes good fun games so here's hoping they make another.

This looks a chill fun experience me and my friends would really dig. Would totally love to see it come out on xbox early access program.

Also wanna say I love this sort of presentation for unfinished games, where Brad steers and explains while Jeff and Rorie asks the questions.

Some parts look great, but I worry about the lack of solo play. It appears you need four friends or be willing to roll with four strangers to get ANYTHING done. If it truly is a game where you can't accomplish much alone it will never take off. Forced co-op is not fun.

Brad said it felt early, but if that is the case I wonder if Skull and Bones will beat it to market? You could definitely play Black Pearl by youself...ship control, navigation, exploration were something that COULD BE done solo. It seems like Skull and Bones is structured so every person has their own ship to control....that just lends itself to running as a group on some days and sole on others.

So it's like Destiny, where the only truly outstanding qualities are gameplay and visual presentation, except with bad gameplay and visual presentation. I don't think Rare know what they want to make or how to make it, and the developer they had on the E3 night show made this pretty clear with his long-winded callouts to "user stories" and "community driven" development without actually talking about the features/value of the game itself in any meaningful way. This looks bad.

This can't be coming out this year, right? Still seems fairly early in development. Some neat ideas on display but presents way more questions than answers about what this game is.

Rare needs to find a way to make this game fun and meaningful for solo players because if it's only playable with groups of 4 this will not succeed.

I want to play this and Skull and Bones, but I doubt I'll have time to play both, and one will have to scratch the boating itch. The one with the best shanties will probably win.

Didn't stop Destiny.

I mean, as sparse as it is (or was, I heard the later expansions improved things) Destiny did have an actual narrative with characters and a story through which you progressed.

On the other hand it seems so strange to me that people are confused at what this game is going for. Maybe it's because it doesn't include the whole crafting/building aspect that's become a part of the genre, but this looks like a pretty standard multiplayer sandbox game in the vain of Rust and the like.

They really need to add more facial animation on those characters, they are looking pretty lifeless.

It's been like over 10 years since TF2 and I'm still surprised stylized games like these still aren't getting up to that quality.

I think its fine to have a coop based game. Yeah their are tons of you in the comments who dont wanna play with people or dont think they will have people to play with but much like player unknown you can have fun with friends if you put in the effort. Also not every game needs to cater to the entirety of a crowd. Thats why we have sports games. Thats why we have mine-craft. Im sure tons of people dont like the two mentioned genres/games but for the people who do they will love this and thats fine.

@murdoc_: That's that Valve magic, when they want to make great games they do it better than almost anybody. But since they can't make a 3rd entry in a series (half life 2, left for dead 2, team fortress 2, dota 2) they had to stop after TF2. And sadly we'll probably never see another AAA game from them again, VR doesn't count.

Is this game even Destiny-like though? Nothing about this really seemed that similar to me, other than being primarily focused on cooperative play.

@alavapenguin: Actually, like all first-party Microsoft games now, it's coming to both Xbox One and Windows 10. In fact, you can probably play it right now on Windows if you're a part of their "Insider Programme". You can sign-up for it on their website.

I'm really excited for this game for what it is (or what it could be), but the concept of being online with 3 friends just doesn't match anymore with my life I guess. When you're 30ish with a busy career, wife and other hobbies gaming just sort of becomes an unplanned thing for when a window of opportunity arises.

It would be great to get a motley crew together for adventures but in the end I feel like it might just become a 'that guy couldn't make it, try next week or a random?' thing - and that it then just sort of ends up being 50% of the experience. That makes me sad :(
