Overview
Tiger Woods PGA Tour was a golf simulation game that featured both real life as well as fictional courses & golfers. Due to it's exclusive partnership with the PGA, the franchise has consistently been the best selling golf game since adding Tiger as it's cover athlete, and has been released on virtually every gaming platform since 1998. EA ended it's partnership with Tiger Woods in October 2013.
History
Through the 1990s, EA Sports had its own PGA Tour series of golf games. Unlike many of their other sports series, it was being overshadowed by other golf games such as Sony's more arcade-like Hot Shots Golf franchise.
In August 1998, EA re-branded the PGA Tour series with Tiger Woods' name and likeness, with Tiger Woods 99. The following year, the "PGA tour" branding was added back with the release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2000. This naming convention for all the main releases remained throughout the series.
End of an Era
In early 2013, rumors surfaced about EA not releasing a PGA Tour game at all in 2014, instead wanting to give developer Tiburon a full two years to concentrate their efforts on a next-gen golf game for PS4 and Xbox One. This coincided with an announcement on October 28, 2013, where EA officially stated that they were ending their partnership with Tiger Woods, releasing the following statement:
EA SPORTS and Tiger Woods have also made a mutual decision to end our partnership, which includes Tiger's named PGA TOUR golf game. We’ve always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.
In August 2014, Tiger Woods signed a new video game deal with Zynga.
At E3 2014, EA confirmed that there would be a new PGA Tour game released in spring 2015. On March 16, 2015, EA announced that their next titular cover athlete would be Rory McIlroy.
