    Underwater locations are seen in many games, and can take place in a variety of locations, including: the bottom of the ocean, flooded caves, or even the inside of fish-bowls. Players interact with these settings in many ways; some characters go underwater in vessels, while others swim there.

    Some characters can only breathe underwater for a limited amount of time and require extra oxygen to stay alive; for example, Sonic the Hedgehog. However, some characters can survive underwater without oxygen; for example, Mario, in his earlier games.
