A Decade Of Dreams

A brief reflection on the lineup of the Dreamcast, 10 years to the day after its release.

Ready to feel old? Exactly 10 years ago today, a number of you were crowding around analog televisions in bedrooms, dorms, and basements to ogle and prod Sega's latest--and as it turned out, last--console, the Dreamcast. Too small a number, I guess, since Sega announced it would cease production of the console barely a year and a half later.

But hey, wasn't it was a great console while it lasted? We thought about going all long-winded nostalgia on you, but Peter Moore did a better job with a nice history lesson already. Instead, we decided to simply pick out a few of our favorite Dreamcast games and record some Quick Look videos. (Nine, in fact, for 9/9/99, you know?) These aren't necessarily the best DC games ever, they're just nine that we remember fondly. Soul Calibur was pretty amazing back then too, for the record.

OK, first hit is free! Let's go with that terrifying fever dream of a puzzle-action game from Sonic Team, ChuChu Rocket.

Aaaaand the remaining eight videos.

Oh yeah, you might want to watch this while I've got your attention. May it haunt your dreams always as it has mine.

Hey, while you're watching, why not post your own favorite Dreamcast memories in the comments?

My favorite part of the Dreamcast was the VMU - Visual Memory UNit. Playing NFL 2K and using the VMU to call a secret audible was sooo sweet. I still can't believe noone has copied that design; it was great. The Dreamcast is dead. long live the Dreamcast.

Dreamcast hit when I was in college, so it was a perfect time to find other people with time on their hands to play games.  We quickly shelled out $70 a pop to get two of the best arcade stick I have ever owned (it was so good that I later rewired it to work with a PS2) and played Soul Calibur and Power Stone long into the night.  This was also the first system to pull me back into football games since Joe Montana on the Genesis.  NFL 2k was a great game that looked amazing.  Eventually we spent hours playing Chu-Chu rocket (a game that I will immediately buy if it comes out on XBL or WiiWare) and bathing in the surrealism of the game and its ability to just mess with people.   Then there was MDK, which was funny and awesome.

All in all it is probably the console that I have my best memories of, despite its short run.  PS2 and N64 got a lot of my playing time when not studying in college, but nothing really came close to the fun we had with the Dreamcast . . . except for Shenmue, that game was painful for me to play.

Man I remember when I first played the dreamcast, I thought it was  great, and I wished I had one. I only had the sega genesis 3 or 7 I think, it was fun when you played sonic in it.

I remember getting my Dreamcast for Christmas of 99. I was 13 and was the most amazed 13 year old when I saw Sonic Adventure. I could not stop playing that game. The semi-open world, great gameplay and graphics that I couldn't imagine before seeing them in action. I also remember all the time I spent playing Phantasy Star Online and enjoying what a next generation Resident Evil looked like in Code Veronica. It is sad to see it gone, but as Peter Moore put it so well, it introduced so many things that are must have features in our current generation of consoles.

You''e luckier than you know.  In the future, when you're one of those who remember the Game Cube generation and how that panned out, I bet it will be exactly the same nostalgic feeling as those who have fond memories of the Dreamcast.  Of course, a lot of those games were unique in those days, but the games of today are still great in their own way and the games of tomorrow will also evolve in a certain way that will make you reminisce on how the games in the "good old days" (today) were.

Getting rank "AWESOME" on Crazy Taxi was a pretty wicked Dreamcast memory. That or becoming king of the world at THPS2. If I didn't have class/work/to play The Beatles Rock Band all day/night I would've plugged it in and played a little.

OMG I miss Dreamcast. I had one for awhile but didn't hold onto it for to long because I didn't realize how amazing it was at the time. One game that I did love was Jet Grind Radio. I know the quick look didn't excite the giant bomb kids but I loved this game. I though it was so cool and it looked great. It's a bummer that Sega had to bail. Miss you Dreamcast.

To this day the Dreamcast still rules, regardless of the sad downfall of this system I have slowly collected a nice stack of treasures for my Dreamcast.  For the longest time it was the system I would take with me when I traveled because I have a carrying case for it and there are plenty of amazing games for it to pass the time away.
The first time I played Virtua Tennis on DC it brought me into a sports game fanaticism not matched since I had played Ice Hockey on the NES, I instantly fell in love with sports games all over again on that system also I'd compair the level of how much I played the NFL 2k's to how much I played Super Tecmo Bowl.

First thing that comes to mind:

BULLETS. BULLETS. BULLETS. BULLETS. ANTIDOTE. BULLETS.

Oh, Zombie Revenge.

But more importantly, Jet Grind Radio, Ikaruga, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Trizeal, Crazi Taxi, Skies of Arcadia... so many memories.

The entirety of Grandia 2 is my favorite Dreamcast memory. That game was and still is an excellent example of how to make an exciting JRPG.

I was a little irked to see none of the Dreamcast RPGs represented in Quick Looks, but you don't hear me not complaining.

i loved the Dreamcast, easily my favourite console ever, it was home to so many awsome games not to mention 2 of my favourite RPGs of all time, Skies Of Arcadia and Grandia 2, and all the awsome arcade madness like crazy taxi, soul caliber, samba do amigo, zombie revenge and house of the dead 2, just flicking through lists of games today has made me so crazily nostagic, anyone remember the episode 1 pod racer game? utter genius, and not to mention Phantasy Star Online, that along with Quake 3 Arena, were my first forays into home console internet gaming, sega basically proved it could be done

even got my gamer tag from the Dreamcast

was loving Blue Stinger at the time PSO came out, made a character that was a HUcast (thats a robot for peeps who have never played it) when it came to name him my mind fell straight to Stinger and then i thought mk2 sound cool on the end, especial cos my real name is Mark, the end is history. been using Stingermk2 for gaming stuff ever since,  i also use the name scarlet for female characters i create in games and that originates from PSO aswell, my first  FOneweal was called Scarlet, i dont particuly remember why though, lol

loving the quick look guys, i couldnt agree more about getting some dreamcast greatness on XBLA especially Chu Chu Rocket or Powerstone 2, i would shell out instantly for most of the games that were on the Dreamcast

Exactly.  That game was jaw dropping at the time.  No way could it have aged well but the graphics and gameplay were miles ahead of Madden.

BTW, next endurance run should be 4 player Chu Chu Rocket.

I'm still haunted by that loud clanking boots sound from Record of Lodoss War, but a great game, nonetheless. I think this is the console that I have the most number of 3rd party peripherals like that aluminum alloy joystick from Interact and weird PS/2 adaptors from Hong Kong for some mouse/keyboard action in Quake II Arena.

I imported the DC in 98, mainly to play House of the Dead 2 (with the real Sega gun) and Blue Stinger.  Then games like Power Stone and Soul Calibur came out, showing how games could look with new hardware.  Later on there was the promising yet underwhelming PSO, then games that could only exist on a Sega console like Seaman, D2, Rent a Hero, Space Channel 5, Rez, Shenmue and others.  It also had the great Gundam game: Rise From the Ashes see a US release, and it didn't suck.

The DC was also loved by many becuae it could run just about anything.  That phat Windows CE logo might anger some, but it's that OS that allowed it to be the hackers' choice for all kinds of software.  Games were easilly pirated since the GD-ROM was actually a regular CD with most of the error buffering removed, allowing for the extra space.  The drawback though was the discs were prone to bad QC because of this - resulting in the early production issues of the launch games that was reported in the US.  Eventually odd discs with crude labels popped up in small shops, emulators of old consoles with 100s of roms on the disc were playable on the DC, making it a great way to play old favorites on your TV.

The DC was also the first console that connected to the Web, with a browser and the ability to play games online - sometimes even against PC players - opening the door to the future of modern consoles.

Probably my fondest memory was playing Kikaioh (Tech Romancer).  I had managed to actually find an arcade back then that had Tech Romancer, and i loved that game.  It ran on the old arcade board based on the PSX (Titan?) and I was crushed when Capcom said they didn't plan on doing a PS port.  2 years later it was announced it was getting a DC version with updated graphics and more content, making it officially a must buy.  I imported it from Japan, then bought the US version later on to show my support.

My last games I bought were the European-only releases of Headhunter and Shenmue 2.  Headhunter was okay, a little too ambitious for the hardware, but it was a decent little game.  Shenmue 2 was a way to finally play the follow up to Shenmue that the US wouldn't see for years until the XBOX release, and this version was in Japanese with subtitles, making it much more immersing than the laughable English track of the original.

It's hard to believe it's been 11 years since the DC, I remember it being the first console I was really excited about since the Genesis.  Unfortunately it didn't attain the success of that console, but it still has a soul that lives on in many players that remember the last Sega console.

PSO was so much fun near the end of its life! 90% of the people that played it had a gameshark and everybody would just go around killing eachother and stealing shit.  It basically became a contest of who had the best combination of gameshark codes.
