Assassin's Creed 2 Teaser Site Teases Italian Renaissance

First concrete stuff on Ubi's upcoming sequel has Da Vinci written all over it.

This Leonardo can actually defend himself.
This Leonardo can actually defend himself.
Ubisoft has launched a teaser site for Assassin's Creed 2. While there isn't much to see just yet beyond a quick Flash animation and an invitation to check out the next issue of Game Informer, that animation says quite a lot about the game's setting.

While we had previously heard back in November that the game would be set in the French Revolution, that bit of info appears to be completely incorrect. The teaser site has a distinctive Italian Renaissance look to it. So will we be running around in someone else's ancestral memories, stabbing famous old dudes like Leonardo Da Vinci? Signs point to "answer unclear, ask again later." At the moment, it seems like only Game Informer knows for sure.

Another section of the site has you print out a logo and hold it up to a webcam to unlock more details. I went through all that, but didn't actually see anything new. Hmm.

@ randiolo:

That's impossible, since there is an almost a 200 years times difference between the end of the Italian Renaissance and the French revolution. Unless they have several protagonists, I cant see that happening.  That would be awesome though.

Siiiiiiick. The Renaissance is the perfect Era for an Assassins Creed game. I assume that Leonardo will be in the game, but not someone who you kill. I'm going to guess that Leonardo helps you/gives you missions, plus make new weapons and gadgets for you. I suspect that you could be working for the Illuminati in this game.............not a bad theory.

And, why did people still listen to Pachter? I dont know what got to Jeff and Ryan, because I specifically recall Jeff dissing him quite some time ago. I mean, come on! He's the guy who said that GTA III would sell 200k copies.

But anyway this sounds like an awesome setting. Much better than you running around in tight pants and white wig during the French Revolution.

The camera thing is really cool and I got it to work after nicking a webcam off my housemate.  Someone has also managed to work out the 2nd and 3rd symbols somehow.  Videos here: First symbol, Second symbol, third symbol.

But the most interesting thing for my money are the numerous hints that your ancestor in this one will be able to fly or glide with a pair of wings.

Hold a mirror to the screen reveals:

Game Informer 4.16.09

They did that because that was what Da Vinci used to do in his journals. He used to research forbidden things so he would write them flipped using a mirror so that no one would be able to understand it.

The first, and only, game where I got all 1000 achievment points. Loved it.

I've been thinking about it since then, and I think part of the reason I liked it so much was because it could actually get crowded. I got so used to endless post-apocalyptic wasteland after post-apocalyptic wasteland where the half dozen people you do see at any one time are all shooting at you. This had crowds to sneak through and hide in. Good stuff.

One wrong leap in Venice could be messy.  Lots of bridges and boats to crash right through.
Jeff, there's a pullout menu when you click the left side logo.  Approve access to your webcam and scan the symbol into that window.

**SPOILERS**

Nice 3D model of the assassin blade gauntlet.  Fully rotates as you twist the paper around.

**BIGGER SPOILERS**

DUDE'S GOT FIVE FINGERS!! OMG!

It could be quite cool if set in Italy during the Renaissance, but it depends on what city really. Florence would be a cool place for the game to be set,  given the nature of it's architecture.

With all the feedback they got about the repetitive missions. If this game isn't amazing, the development team has failed. They can't just make "the sequel" game. This has to be an amazing stand alone game.

The Italian Renassiance sounds more appealing to me than the French Revolution. Don't know why, but that's just me. Anyways I'm excited, I'm hoping they make some revamps on the old game however. There were some that needed some serious tweaking. And less repetition.

I mashed the numpad without thinking on the age verification screen and now it won't let me access the site because I'm from 2352.

I'd like to see modern-day Assassin's Creed. Then again, after forcing myself through the first game I'd rather not play any Assassin's Creed unless they make it fun to play outside of the missions. More pickpocketing? No, thank you.

If you wait long enough on the end of the video, you'll see a message, that's backwards.  I rotated it in paint, and it says: Game Informer 4/16/09.  So expect the 4/16/09 issue of Game Informer to be on Assassins' Creed.

So...has anyone tried putting in the date of birth 04/15/1452?  I mean, given that Da Vinci's artwork is featured predominantly on that website...and you can hand-enter a DOB at the BEGINNING of the Animus (if you hit exit experience at the bottom afterwards, you won't be able to do it)...

...I don't know...with all the secrets and crazy shit the LAST game did...I'm curious to see if Da Vinci's DOB is an Easter Egg with more info lying in wait...

Will we see the Ninja Turtles, one can only hope.  So what does this mean, we play through the DNA memories of a soprano person whose ancestor was italian?  Wonder what all the stuff in the last game meant.

Hopefully the sequel won't just be a pretty game like the first. I tried so hard to like it more, but the gameplay was really weak, super easy, and extremely repetitive.

Hopefully it'll be a little more interesting this time around. The first game would've been so much better if each mission wasn't the exact same. There's only so many times you can sit on a bench patiently.

Update: Oh snap!! Looks like I wasn't quick enough ^^^^^^

They basically confirmed renaissance period in that trailer; and while Italy is looking likely, I kinda thing it would be cool if they drew parrallels between the Italian, English and French renaissance -- although the English renaissance does come later than the Italian renaissance.

I am very excited about what they are going to do in this game.  The Italian setting would be an excellent place to have it since the buildings in that time would also be perfect to free run around so I am hopeful in the way it's going.

I read it on Destructoid and they speculated about it being in Venice. Apart from the Renaissance being an interesting setting, I'm anxious to see what new mechanics they introduce with it (hiding in the water, perhaps?). Wherever they do set it, I'm sure it'll be cool; Can't wait.

Looks like you have to castrate Vitruvian Man, hardcore. Seriously though, I think the Ninja Turtles setting sounds promising.

Edit: I finally did the webcam thing... kinda,,, & it takes some doing but is admittedly the least bit awesome, I waved my webcam at the pdf on my (TFT LCD) screen, balancing it on a can lying around (to make it a little less shaky than my hands) & point it directly at the shape, I could only get it to work when it was so close up that I couldn't see the hand & pulling out messed it up, so the printed pic is prolly better. what happens is the 3d shape follows the shape in the camera like Anderson Coopers fail stunt during the elections last year (lulz)
