Batman's Arkham City Is Five Times Larger Than Arkham Asylum

That is a whole lot of bat.

Batman: Arkham City’s... er, city, will be bigger than Arkham Asylum’s overrun and corridor-filled island. The name of the follow-up implies as much. But just how much bigger will the new game world be? According to game director Sefton Hill, Arkham City will be about five times larger than the game world in the previous gameI'm bad at math and I don’t have exact dimensions at hand, but that sounds like a lot more space! 

“The footprint of Arkham City is about five times bigger than Arkham Island, but our primary intention was never to create a bigger game world just for the sake of it,” Hill told GameSpot in a short interview

Hill went on and explained that Batman will be able to go wherever he wants in the new game world and will indeed encounter some side stuff reminiscent of open-world games, like missions, secrets, and brawls. However, the critical path will always be clear. Also, he made it clear that Arkham city isn’t a sandbox.   

 
 
 
“I wouldn't describe the game as ‘sandbox’ because a totally open and free-form game world would not allow us to create the kind of atmosphere that we wanted to,” Hill continued, “but we don't hold your hand either. Arkham City is its own place; a massive super prison, jam packed with supervillains, thugs, and psychopaths.” 

“There aren't any rules, but it has a law of its own, and this is why it is a perfect setting for Batman. Gamers will have to think and act like the Dark Knight if they want to survive in a place like Arkham City.”

Earlier, Hill said that the team is trying to recreate the “pressure-cooker” atmosphere from the first game. So, even though Arkham City is several times larger than the island of the original, Rocksteady will attempt to make you feel like you need to progress in the actual game instead of wandering the streets looking for a thug or six to smash. Sounds hot, right?

So no batmobile or what.  That is kinda upsetting, but doesn't kill the game for me.  I'm still excited to play this masterpiece.

Maybe for Batman, but for a character like Spider-Man, an open-world is a necessity.

Even though I thought Arkham Asylum was one of the best games of 09, and added a cherrie on top of what brought Batman back to life after the Dark Knight film, I haven't been overly excited for this game. I have a feeling I will be soon though.

I don't really care about the city's size, as long as you have rooftops, streets and sewers... even though Arkham Asylum had different levels, Arkham City needs way more roof action!

Sounds good, as long as I don't have to 'Push X to Run'.  
 
The trailer shows quite a few low-level buildings so I'm hoping for a lot more grappling and lot less running.

Right great environments, cool characters, and fun story mode.  Wait these are all the things are were right with the first game.  How about we here how you guys didn't just make five or six of the exact same boss fights?  Or how you changed up the enemy encounters to be something other than a gargoyle hopping game of tag? 
 
I'll be impressed and ready for this sequel when it starts acting like a sequel.  The first game was great but its flaws were only forgivable because, a) it was a decent Batman (or even super hero) game and b) it was the first.  I do not think they can get away with the same lazy mistakes again.  They've created an amazing skeleton for a game now they just need to build something amazing on top of that.

When I was a kid I used to think Batman was kind of lame. Now, thanks to the new Batman movies I pick up a controller to play Arkham: Asylum and while I am breaking henchman faces I think to myself: *"Yeah I'm fucking Batman!". 
 
No game and no character has ever made me feel this way so I am totally looking forward to this game. 
 
*In no way do I mean this literally

Big is fine as long as the narrative and the focus is controlled for this kind of game. Definately looking forward to it though

I'd certainly hope it's bigger (and longer). The first one was damn small and short. Good, but short. (Unless you count all the meaningless collecting bullshit).

Yeah, i am getting the feeling that the world will be filled with buildings that i can't enter, streets that go nowhere, and the same 5 random npcs walking around.  Hopefully i am wrong, but yeah...

@Zor: Yea, that's one of the things that felt so good about Arkham Asylum. The space wasn't massive but it was all critical and well realized. Dead Space 1 had a similar environment.  
 
Overall, the news doesn't make me feel very good. I loved AA's tight experience, and hope they can do the same with a bigger space. Also, this is going to make cleaning up riddles even more annoying. Though swinging around should be fun.

First game was awesome and wasn't even that large once you'd unlocked all the areas really. Did a great job of pacing your progress to hide it. Five times larger sounds like a nice sweet spot between bigger and too big to me :-D
