Beyond Good & Evil 2 Development Troubled?

In the past, Ubisoft has outwardly displayed misgivings when asked about the state of affairs of Beyond Good & Evil 2. But a new rumor floating around asserts that the production of the long-awaited sequel may have been paused, or even worse, Ubisoft might be talking cancelation.

French gaming website Woot Gaming (via Destructoid, via NeoGAF) alleges that the creator of Beyond Good & Evil, Michel Ancel, and one of his developers, have left Ubisoft Montpellier and founded their own studio due to some sort of spat over the follow-up. This in turn has left the entire project in some sort of disarray; it's paused and--provided this report is accurate--some studio gurus are talking about scrapping the title.

Beyond Good and Evil is still fairly playable even by today's standards. It's aged fairly well. You shouldn't give up on ever playing BG&E just because it's old!

While this is certainly disappointing, how is 'Michael Ancel leaves Ubisoft (maybe), Forms New Studio (maybe)" not the headline here?

I'd like it to get made and played

Interesting. Seems like more and more people in the industry are growing tired of the larger companies' bullshit.
 
May I have back the times when small studios made awesome, clever games? Pretty please?

This is horrible news, one of the games I was hoping to hear about at E3 :(

so sad about this.
i just hope that if Ancel has started a new studio that they can get a game out without too much trouble.
between rayman 2 and beyond good and evil, he's basically The Greatest Guy

I recently played through Beyond Good and Evil for the first time and absolutely loved it, it holds up really well with it's artstyle. Go play it if you haven't yet.

It seemed vaporware for a while, but always depressing to get confirmation. Even if it does see the light, it likely won't be anything similar to the first, which is what had me excited :/

Thats certainly bad news if its true, but sadly, another page on the troubled past of BGE2.

Godamn you Ubisoft, this better not be true, I want the sequel badly :(
 
I was afraid of this but I was hoping for the best

I didn't know there was even a chance that it was coming back. Now I'm doubly disappointed.

Got my used copy of the PS2 version of BG&E for 2.65£. Haven't played yet, but you know what I'll be doing this summer. :)

Also, BG&E2 wasn't technically announced: the teaser was untitled and Ubisoft, if I recall correctly, has avoided actually announcing it. I guess they were anticipating problems and decided to leave the back door open, should they ever need to back out.

well this blows, but I half expected it to be canceled after not hearing about it for over a year since the teaser (same for i am alive)

Anyway, this is a huge bummer. I played the PC version again just a few weeks ago and it still holds up tremendously. If you haven't played it yet, do yourself a favor and do it, now!

Too bad for BGE2 but at least Ancel will be able to make games again I guess.

This is what happens when people reject Rayman for really basic, dumb characters like the rabbits; it's just really depressing overtime.

I really hope this isn't true. BG&E deserved to be an A-list franchise.

I should probably look for a PC version of the first since i can't find it around my area on the xbox

Ancel was supposed to make that TinTin game!!! FUCK.

Apart from the one quick blip of it, this one has been underground for a while so guess if we will see this sequel pop up in the future it will find a new home somewhere to put the rest of it together or it will just exist in the ether like that one high res screenshot done of the stranger (from Nocturne) that was put out yet still no sequel for that game is out there :(.

Good for him, he's too good for Ubisoft.  Too bad about Beyond Good & Evil 2, though.  The first was brilliant and I'd been really looking forward to the sequel.
