Did 3DS Just Get Achievements With...Accomplishments?

Don't get too excited yet, though.

No Caption Provided

The slightly delayed 3DS firmware went live today, introducing the ability for publishers to sell DLC, 3D video recording, and more hats to collect also introduces what may be Nintendo’s answer to achievements and trophies: accomplishments.

So far, accomplishments are limited to the StreetPass Mii Plaza and have zero point value, but it’s not hard to imagine accomplishments eventually expanding into actual games.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo didn’t trumpet the idea of accomplishments prior to this firmware update--in fact, I don’t remember the company mentioning them at all. Then again, that sounds like typical Nintendo.

If Nintendo decided to make accomplishemtns part of Virtual Console, my world might actually fall apart, and I don’t even really care about achievements that much.

But all of them are the worst kind of trophies, the kind you have absolutely no control over. They're practically random!

Also, quit asking for them in EMULATED games, that's not a realistic possibility

They are astonishingly difficult (finish find me 5 times, what?), and only apply to the Mii courtyard channel. Not real groundbreaking to me.

Nothing to see here folks. Nintendo has had single-software Achievements since the Wii came out. This is just an example of that for Mii Plaza.

I used to be a huge achievements whore, but these days i only care about getting achievements for games that i still enjoy playing after the credits roll. If the gameplay is boring by then you can expect me to not even both trying for the ones i missed, but if the gameplay is still good then i will go for them. Oh, and i have really grown to hate the collectibles in games. When i was a kid they used to be fun but now as an adult i don't have the time to hunt for all 100 golden dildos or whatever they want me to find, especially if i have a few games on the go with the same requirement.

@Shaanyboi: But why give you such items for completing a game when Nintendo has the possibility to sell you such goods a la Microsoft? We gamers need to think like a multi-billion dollar company, and then say no thanks when they offer us junk for real monies.

It's getting pretty hillarious the names people have to come up with to get around the word "achievement".

@Superfriend: This is pretty much how I feel them. I don't agree with the people who seem to think they're the greatest addition to gaming ever, because they add "whole new ways!" to play games.. but I don't agree with the hipsters who want them completely removed either.

I tend to ignore them, I don't think they're particularly important to games, but they can be a bit of fun, especially if they encourage you to do something in a game you might not have otherwise tried, and being able to compare your progress with other people is a positive thing too. When you're playing a game just to get them though... then you're taking it a step too far.

I'm in favour of Nintendo adding them, but it feels like they should have made unlocking the Mii hats tied into them, similar to what Xbox games do with Avatar awards.

Man, I must be the only one who doesn't like achievements here. I've always found them counter-intuitive as to how I play a game.

Achievements are a great way of tracking your progress in a game. They make it easy to compare your progress with other people. They sometimes help you find stuff hidden in the game or give you incentive to try other ways of playing a game instead of just rushing through.

If Nintendo wants to do them, fine. A nice unified online experience would be nice too. And a better interface for all the shop stuff. If Wii U comes around and launches as barebones as the 3DS did, there´s really no excuse anymore. They had a lot of time to fix these things.

Wow some people think of achievements in such a one-dimensional way. Achievements are a really useful tool if used correctly, they can be used to add depth to a games story line (like for instance having the player make a choice but either way they get an achievement naming them as a villain, to show how shitty a position they have been thrown in) or simply as an insentive for players to try new things within a game that they may not try or think of trying. It is also a way of rewarding players for tough tasks and being able to react to them in sequels (like common thinks in games that check if you have achievments of the previous title and reward you in the sequel for playing the previous games, this can also be taken a step further as to actually change missions of dialog in the next game).

Even if Nintendo didn't actively put it in developers will do it off their own back anyway, take Xenoblade Chronicles for instance which has an extensive list of achievements in-game.

They can be a fantastic tool for communication between developers and players and ways of personalising playthroughs even if they player does not actively seek them out.

Maybe in like 1% of games, being generous. In most games its an annoying feature of "Hey! You just shot a hundred mans! Pat yourself on the back. No, you didn't actually unlock anything for doing this. Thats what dlc is for silly!"

So yeah. I can't wait for accomplishments. People can buy a whole bunch of games that they hate to jack up their gamerscore. I wouldn't be so down on it if it had the tiniest little bonus attached to it. But it's literally just a dude flicking pennies past your vision to get you to play games that you don't want to play in the first place. Movie license/tv license games and sport games 2k6 say hi.

They should use the experience from doing this for the Wii-U, i'm sure people would welcome that feature for the next nintendo console.

If the WiiU actually has all the games of the PS3 and 360, then it'll have them. SSF4 for 3DS still had achievements even. It's like for PS3 trophies. They were already making them up for X-Box, why not throw em on PS3? I'm sure it'll be the same.

Let's not get too hyped up here. So far this is just inside a single application, and there's no button on the main 3DS menu to indicate that this sort of functionality is coming as a system-wide feature.

They talked about this before launch but said it might be some weird thing where only certain publishers use them - they either quoted EA doing it or Ubisoft I can't remember.

Either way I like that it actually happened.

EDIT: Also,

I don't play games for achievements anyway; I suppose this is a cool addition to those who actually care about them, but it's not gonna affect what I buy or how I play a game in the slightest.

I think achievements are generally a good thing. There's loads of things I've done in games for achievements that I wouldn't otherwise have bothered. I played games on easy until I got the Xbox 360; why not, it made no difference on my end.

Now I actually finish games and sometimes 100% them or finish multiple play-throughs. I get a lot more value out of them and have a means to measure my completion of a game; so I can trade it in and end up playing more games.

Completing Super Meat Boy, finishing all the trials in Super Street Fighter IV and recently finishing Geometry Wars were really fucking hard but also really rewarding. And without some sense/form of accomplishment wouldn't it make more sense to watch a movie or something?

Without achievements I'd play less of 360 games; unless I were doing the same things anyway to prove a point, which would be fucking stupid.

The thing I love about achievements is just being able to see a big list of games of played and things I've done in them. I like to run back through it every few months and remember some of the things I've done. I'd love to be able to do that with Nintendo games, so I hope this turns out to be more than a throw away feature.

@vinsanityv22: Hey, adding a fun incentive to dig deeper into your games is both great for the marketing of a game and its players.

Player: I think I'm done with this game, so I'mma go trade it in... Wait, lemme see what achievements I'm missing... Ooh, that sounds fun. I bet I can do that! Guess I'll hang on to this for a bit more."

I don't really care about achievements and stuff either, but getting mad at those who do is ludicrous. Quit being such a hater.
