Disney Cancels Pirates Of The Caribbean: Armada Of The Damned

The Tron team's promising RPG gets killed and some people are losing their jobs.

Propaganda Games' promising RPG Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned has been cancelled and word on the street is that possibly around 100 people at Propaganda have been given pink slips as a result of this decision.

Disney Interactive Studios confirmed the cancellation yesterday afternoon following a rumor report from Kotaku stating that the game was axed and people lost their jobs. Here's the boilerplate statement from DIS, which mentions that the publisher has "completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games" that has affected "one of the studio's two development teams."

Disney Interactive Studios confirms the cancellation of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned video game which was scheduled to be released in 2011. As a result of this decision, Disney Interactive Studios completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games, its Vancouver, BC internal studio, affecting one of the studio's two development teams.

The studio is still in active production of Tron: Evolution, the video game, which will be released on December 7, 2010 with additional DLC (downloadable content) support following the game's release.

== TEASER ==Propaganda Games, as noted in the above, will continue developing Tron: Evolution: The Video Game. Tron is still set to be released later in December and the lone team at the studio will continue to support the movie tie-in post-release with DLC.

Armada of the Damned apparently looked good when Jeff saw it briefly earlier this summer, and critics seem to agree that it had potential despite being one of those dreaded movie games. You can read Jeff's take on it here if you'd like, though, you might leave it feeling a bit blue considering what has happened.

This does suck because a good Pirate game would be awesome, and at the very least the PotC license would be one most conducive to translating to a quality game.

This is a shame, there's not enough RPGs these days and it seemed interesting. Would of rather Tron was cancelled than this.

Just read that article by Jeff. Gotta say now, this news makes me sad, it seemed like it was interesting and could have potentially been a good game.

Ug...I was excited for this. It looked like a really ambitious title and not just a movie cash-in.

STOP TRYING TO MAKE MMOS.
The genre is the #1 cause of developer shutdowns.

Just focus on making a really good RPG. Yea, that's right. I said it.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE RPGS GONE?

Demon's Souls was my last taste of good role-playing. :(

I don't see why.  I agree the movies weren't particularly good, but this was very loosely based on them.  It was essentially a Fable-esque, open world game with morality choices, with sailing and piratey things.  Had a lot of potiential, and what we'd seen of it looked really quite good.

Completely bummed about this.  Most all the early previews of this game had people saying it looked pretty good, and I would have loved a pirate RPG.  I hate when this kinda stuff happens.

Man, I liked the first couple Pirates movies. And I liked what they were trying to do here, making a Mass Effect-ish kind of RPG.

This sucks.

I didn't really like the movie series but this actually was starting to look pretty cool. I am sad to see it has been canceled.  Maybe someone else can pick it up and remove all the Pirates of the Caribbean references and just make a decent Pirates game.

@EgoCheck616:  While I agree wholeheartedly that the risk/reward of MMO-cash-cow-iness is not worth it, this game was an action-RPG in the vein of a God of War with more RPG (so maybe think God of Mass Effect...but probably not nearly as polished as either).

I saw the E3 demo for it, and it did look quite good.  I think its a shame, since the game seemed only loosely affiliated with the movies, and the world needs more pirate games.

The game looked good, and the first PotC game is definitely worth playing, so there was every chance this wouldn't suck.

I don't understand this from their perspective at all.  They're well into development, they had a little bit of buzz going, initial impressions seemed good and they have a MASSIVE summer blockbuster coming out next summer carrying the brand.  You won't be able to move for PotC advertising next year.  How does it not make sense to finish this game up and get it on shelves?

Ah, man, this looked good. Should have cancelled Tron instead, PotC is far more profitable and only fools with rose tinted glasses like Tron, anyway.

In a rare situation, but I the PotC game looked much more interesting than the current Tron game to be quiet honest, so its a shame this has happened.
