Fallout 3's Version Of Pittsburgh Is A Scary, Scary Place

Bethesda shot out some media of the next Fallout expansion, and man, it looks rude.

One complaint I've heard lodged against Fallout 3 since its release last October was the broad sameness of its landscape and visual design. "Everything's brown and dead," you all cried. Well, yeah. It's a wasteland. Sweeping nuclear destruction probably has a way of flattening everything out, you know?

At any rate, you can't claim that Bethesda's been riding the same artistic pony through Fallout 3's downloadable expansions. Operation Anchorage did a good job of envisioning Alaska's arctic, pre-nuclear landscape, and it looked markedly different from the base game. Now we've got some new media of the second add-on, The Pitt. It's set in Pittsburgh, natch, and man, Pittsburgh does not look like a place you want to go on vacation.

I'm loving the dirty, yellow, industrial color palette in these shots. (Some of them are old, but this is everything that's out so far.) Makes me a lot more excited for The Pitt, all of a sudden; I just hope it focuses less on combat than Anchorage did.

Speaking of which, if you didn't see our Quick Look of Op: Anchorage the first time around, have a look!

I might need to play this after the next DLC, just so I can take advantage of the raised level cap.

It's funny, this was supposed to be a Feb release.

I haven't even got round to Operation Anchorage, i had to start the game over with Games For Windows Live turned on *sigh* nevermind, this looks pretty awesome though.

It's weird, i almost wish for a proper expansion, like The Shivering Isles or Bloodmoon, these DLC packs are more like Nights of the Nine, which is cool, but yeah. Then again, i prefer the Elder Scrolls, so nevermind!

Man, they did quite a job uglifying the place.  Knowing how beautiful pittsburg is when looked down upon at night and then seeing these, they really do a good job on the whole post nuclear thing.

Being from Pittsburgh (5 minutes outside the city itself) that's kinda freaky. The first pic when coming outta the tunnels is the best view of the city at any time of day but damn.... they made it really creepy. Looks awesome.

Looks amazing so far. I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard they were using Pittsburgh for their second DLC, so seeing what looks to be pretty much an entire new city seems awesome. However, I do hope that, like DC, they model the surrounding area, as well, and populate it with enough stuff to make it interesting.

On the downside, I'm sure this will cost a lot more than OP Anch, but that is only to be expected. Also, if I were playing the 360 version, I would fear for my measly 20GB hard drive. I'm just about tapped out on that thing.

I didn't get Operation Anchorage because from what I heard, it didn't sound like Fallout.  I hope The Pitt stays more to convention.  And it's looking like it's headed in the right direction.

Man, I am loving Fallout 3. It might just be my 2008 GOTY. I don't know, I still got a lot more to see, and GTAIV would be hard for any game to beat. Either way, I think the Pitt looks pretty rad.

Modern-day Pittsburgh is one of the most awful places on this planet, and I've seen a fair amount of it.  I put this in my top ten of awful places, a list that includes Buffalo, Detroit, and Kandahar Afghanistan.  Pittsburgh is slightly cleaner than Mumbai.  Side note-Buffalo has a slightly higher employment rate than Kandahar and Detroit is actually less safe than Fallujah.  I say this fully knowing that I am less than half an hour from Baltimore, "The City that Bleeds".  Actually, Baltimore would make a great expansion for Fallout 3.  Just add a little more map to the North... please?

All this stuff is pretty fun to watch. I live maybe a fourty minute's drive from D.C. and I'm not far off from (and have spent a fair amount of time in) Pittsburgh. Those few screenshots are actually quite a bit more impressive than a lot of what I've seen in Fallout 3, and I really enjoyed Fallout. I'm pretty excited for The Pitt now.

Also, I agree with OneHoboWine. Pittsburgh was not a place that I enjoyed visiting. Baltimore would also make a good place for an expansion. It's got a lot of potential for a post-apocalyptic setting.

All these Pittsburgh jokes sicken me.  I betcha all of you dissing the city have never been there before.

But... I've been there before and those pictures look like present-day Pittsburgh.
