Guitar Hero: World Tour Subscriptions? For User-Generated Music?

Hey, wanna pay money for something that you can currently get for free and probably wouldn't miss?

One of the tidbits out of today's earnings call from Activision has me just kind of shaking my head. Here's Stephen Totilo's version of the proceedings...

In an earnings call today, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said that the “GHTunes” is a smashing success that shows the way to a new business model: “GHTunes has attracted over 25,000 user-generated songs,” he said during opening remarks. “That means we will likely have up to 100,000 songs by year’s end.… The ability to offer these songs on a subscription basis may very well [present] the newest opportunity in our subscription portfolio.”

Sooo... let me get this straight. You want to take user-generated music... and sell access to these songs as part of a subscription package? Did someone forget to tell Mr. Kotick that most of the user-created songs on the GHTunes service are kind of awful? At least they were the last time I looked at it. Somehow I doubt that a significant amount of amazing material has gone online in the last week.

In fact, GHTunes seems to be adhering perfectly to Mario's Law, which states that any console-based level construction tools will immediately be used to create some cheap knock-off of Super Mario Bros. music. Like so...

Here is another video of what was, as of the 27th, anyway, the top user-submitted song on the service, "Impossible."

Would you pay money to access this kid's rad tunes?

Judging by the user-generated content of the two games, GHTunes will never even be the videogame equivalent of LittleBigPlanet.

EA has been doing an admirable job of shaking their corporate meat-spear persona with a taste for consumer buttocks (ignoring the DRM stuff, at least) while Activision seems to think it's a good idea to take their place. Do we really need another company with such a visibly insatiable desire for money?

I realize that the whole point of anything is to make money, but at least charge fees for legitimate things. Contrary to what Kotick is smoking, GHTunes will never be the videogame equivalent of iTunes.

That kids song was TERRIBLE, and he was completely full of himself.  Also, "Impossible" has two S's.

I did play a pretty cool rendition of a Tetris song off of GHTunes, but other than that everything was pretty crappy. No I would NOT pay a monthly fee for this.

Oh man, we see this happening a lot more often in the past few years haven't we. Let's do some thinking: user created  songs is a good idea as an experiment and to have fun.  And if this Basketball kid's song as number one at the moment, we're in big trouble. All I heard was a fast solo of nothing. On the other hand, if a band does create something really really good, would they be stupid enough to just post it online for other users for a fee that they will see dime one, or would they do the smart thing and try to make some serious money off of it?
This is just a fun little distraction and Activision trying to squeeze more of your hard earned money out of your pockets.
As an old saying goes....."just say no".

Oh yes, Mr. Basketball45, let's check out all your other honors!

Honestly though, I'm not big on Guitar Hero or Rock Band for that matter, but having people pay a subscription fee for user created songs that aren't original or any good should be a crime...punishable by multiple punches to the face.

Hey, Kimbo Slice! We might have work for you!

I can't remember the last time I've seen a comment made by Bobby Kotick that didn't leave me frustrated.  I don't think any of his ideas have ever been about giving their customers more value.  It's pretty much about how much they can exploit their customers for more money.

What's up with that Mario song?! It doesn't follow any kind of logical progression up and down the neck of the guitar! It's like it was made by....well,  by a user instead of a professional. It's creepy!
Edit: Oh. The song is being played Lefty mode. I think that's what confused me. But it doesn't stop the song from sounding horrible and being dumb!

How many songs are actually on GHTunes right now?  The game's been out not even a week, and some stupid kid is bragging that he supposedly has the top-downloaded song?  WTF?  He never even pops up the guide to prove its actually him...and why does he have to download it if its his?  I really don't see anyone paying for this crap...

If you have to pay for Battle.net on top of having to pay for Starcraft 2 three times just to get the full campaign, I am not going to buy another Blizzard game, ever.

This is so incredibly stupid. I completely agree that the song making stuff on these games are kinda not very good. At all. And the big selling point of this whole thing was that it was a big catalog of songs you could download FOR FREE. Completely defeats the purpose if they start charging for it, and they won't even be paying the people that are giving them the stuff that they are charging for, which would also be bull.

LOL at the kid in the second video!

I didn't think it could get any worse! (Not that Guitar Hero is necessarily a bad game, but this is more ridiculous than Brian Bright.)

Developers think they can just rip you off and that we'll just bend over and take it. I do not approve. Though, I don't have a current gen console, so I won't be buying this game anyway. I'm just gonna stick with Audiosurf.

hold on....you pay for the game with this feature built in, then you spend your hard earned time (and we all know time is money!) making a good song.....then you have to pay to be able to download user generated content! and that money doesnt even go to the user?!   we live in a sick world my friends.

I seriously fucking hate Kotick. He is the worst man in the industry. I am being dead fucking serious here. EVERYTHING he says is about fucking consumers in the ass, and he always says it with such excitement and glee. We're adding more advertising! We're charging you fees! Battlenet is a huge financial opportunity for Activision! Fuck off you repulsive fat ginger.
