I Guess You Can't Review a Free Game

So far, the gameplay in American McGee's latest twisted creation doesn't reach the quality of its production values.

The levels go from this...
The levels go from this...
The first episode of American McGee's Grimm is out today on the GameTap download service. It's called A Boy Learns What Fear Is, and I was all set to review it this morning--until I found out it's free not just today, but every day, from now until our Sun enters the red giant phase and engulfs the Earth in its fiery tumescence. (GameTap had previously announced that each episode of Grimm will be free-to-play for only 24 hours after its release, which is still true of all the rest of them.) Slapping a rating on what's essentially a free demo feels like a pointless exercise, so here we are on the blog.

The free-for-a-day policy seems a little risky if GameTap wants to make Grimm episode sales a significant revenue stream. If the brevity of the first episode is any indication, you could easily get your fill of each subsequent installment in one sitting, making it possible to play the entire season (eight episodes, at one per week) without paying for it. Of course, Grimm may be intended as a loss-leader that gets you to install the GameTap client and maybe consider signing up for it in the process, and I think the game is interesting enough to serve that function...just barely.

I've been excited about Grimm because it's conceptually similar to the last McGee-branded game that I was way into, Alice. Both of them take beloved fairytale worlds--worlds that have been diluted and Disney-fied over the years--and sully them right up with sinister art design, gleefully macabre storylines, and uncomfortable ambience. Grimm gets all that stuff right. The writing is articulate and sometimes funny, with suitable voiceover to match, and there are enough unpleasant events for you to scrunch up your face at. (In one area, you turn a bunch of children into walking matchsticks so they can burn their teacher alive at the stake. A fair number of people get turned into animals, or bloody chunks of gore, too.) I wish GameTap had started with one of the more recognizable stories, like Little Red Riding Hood or Beauty and the Beast; it would have made for a  more meaningful contrast between the family-friendly modern version of the story and the sadistic old morality tale you turn it into.

...to this, and look cool doing it.
...to this, and look cool doing it.
Alas, Grimm just doesn't offer all that much for you to do. Alice was a full-featured third-person action game, with different weapons and puzzles. In Grimm, all you really do is spread your pestilence and filth around each pristine storybook level, which in gameplay terms means simply running around and covering every square inch of clean ground you can find. There's a brief amount of platforming in this first episode, and the way each objects animates as it changes from pretty to ugly is actually pretty striking. But there just isn't much here to engage you beyond the visuals, and the whole thing is over in an hour or less.

I'm still hopeful for the later installments of Grimm, if they incorporate more meaningful gameplay elements than what's on offer in this first episode. Heavier platforming elements and some power-ups (not to mention some sort of combat) would certainly help. McGee's development house Spicy Horse (a name I give five stars) has done some good work with the Unreal Engine and the stylized artwork here; I just hope they build a better game with them in the coming weeks. But hey, who am I to judge? Feel free to go check out the game for yourself and post your own user review.

I played it to day and I didn't even finish it. I was all excited for it too because the concept sounds so cool. Too bad it sucks.

The art style looks quite interesting. Sadly, I don't have a GameTap account.

The Gametap service rocks, you can set yourself up with a free account and snoop around at a load of free games, but I wouldn't advice Grimm

Sounds like it's not quite good enough to justify installing GameTap for.
I suppose I'll pass on this one.

Brad, Just go back and review Alice instead.  Anything that gets more people to buy more copies of Alice is cool with me.  Oh yeah, review Anachronox too.  Haha

I guess there are some free games out there that deserve a review but in the case of this game it doesn't sound like it has that much appeal.

I think the point of the Grimm series isnt exactly to sell a bunch, but instead to get people to download the Gametap software, and potentially check out all the other stuff on the service. It's more of an advertisement - like "Hey look, we have Grimm free! But these are some other cool games we have..."

"Katamari Da-stinky"  pretty much sums up the game play.  A neat graphical effect, but it felt a bit too much like mowing my lawn.

The point of a review is to evaluate the quality of the game.  Not the price.

You should be reviewing the content of the game and then it's up to the reader to decide whether they want to play it. Purchasing the game is part of that decision but the most important element of deciding whether to play something is TIME investment. And whether or not someone should invest their time in a game (even if that's only 10 minutes) can ALWAYS be evaluated.

If the game only deserves one star then give it one star and then that way people don't have to waste their time playing it. Even if it is free.

I loved the game actually, played it twice. Loved the art style and the twisted nature of this game, very screwed up vs. what I thought it was going to be. I wold recommend everyone giving the free first episode a try at least. The gameplay is very simple, but world is so damn crazy and twisted you wanna play more.

I must say I agree with Chris to an extent, but in honesty, a game can be criticized and rated poorly for not having enough content for the price. Can't the reverse also be true? You can't run a game into the ground even if it sucks if it also happens to be free...didn't cost you anything.

Just because a game's free doesn't mean you don't have to spend a more valuable resource on it- Time. You should still review games so people can judge whether to spend thier often precious time on it, as some people only have the time to game for a couple of hours a day, if that.

Even though I liked the feel and style of McGee's Alice I don't really get why this guy is so revered. The only really good game he made was Alice, all that followed were mediocre at best. I have my hopes up for this game as it looks to be gritty but I fear it won't be suffice... I'll know in about 1.5h when the slow-ass download finishes.

EDIT
Oh guess my slowly dementing, gradually dying of extreme old-age pc can't run this game. Shader model 2.0 again!

I think that it was a fun game for the price.  The story, while not one of the better known ones, does do a proof-of-concept fairly well, in that you get to see the difference between the original story, and the "clean" version.  I personally didn't much care for the platforming, but mostly because it seemed like the platforms in some areas were just a bit too high to jump onto.  Luckily there is no real penalty for death, other than having to go back and start at a section you may have already been to, but you don't really lose progress.

All-in-all, if they're doing this to get people to install their service and try it out, maybe get on their add-supported system and try stuff out, great.  The bigger the install base, the more games they can have.  And, if they have people coming in to play this once a month, maybe they'll stick around to play Frogger, or Galaga, or some other stuff.

You absolutely can review a free game.  Game reviews shouldn't just be a consumer reports evaluation based on dollar value- its about whether you think its worth our time (far more valuable in my book).

I agree that they should have opened with something more familiar.  After the novelty wore off about 20 minutes in, it just seemed disturbing for the sake of being disturbing.  The game sort of degenerated into being inside Jeffery Dahmer's first grade artwork with nothing compelling to do other than walk around and go, "Ya, that's pretty f'ed up."

I agree with everyone who says a review is a good idea, especially because I'm curious to see what legit reviewers think of it.   Personally, I hated it.  I've been skeptical of American McGee for a long time, so after the cool trailer I knew there would be some way to gum it up.  Brad, you put it a lot more nicely than I could when you said there isn't a lot to do.  It's incredibly repetitive, and I had negative fun for all 23 minutes it took for me to power through it.  I actually thought the writing was the most offensively terrible part, for what was there and what wasn't.  Grimm's voice actor did the best with what he had but the script was just so grating the opening movie alone made me want to shut it down.  Also although I got that I was playing through the different scenes in the boy's story, I totally didn't get that I was supposed to be "exposing" his rationale as being some trite know-it-all kid until the very last cutscene.  It was definitely a clever concept but I don't know that I have ever seen an idea so poorly executed.

I'm glad I didn't have to pay anything for it and it took just over 20 minutes or man would I ever feel cheated.

I'm glad to see most others have mirrored my score. This was actually the first time I'd reviewed a game without knowing what others think of it first.I'd really like Brad to review the game also to see his opinion since I'm sure if DBZ was made free he'd be reviewing that. :P
