I Know, Another Kickstarter Project, But...Tex Murphy

Who can complain about a brand-new FMV game?

Please don't tell my parents how many times I dialed a hot line for Tex Murphy hints.
Please don't tell my parents how many times I dialed a hot line for Tex Murphy hints.

Kickstarter is giving designers some ideas. Specifically, that idea appears to involve reviving game projects and concepts that fell to the wayside of gaming's past. The latest? Tex Murphy.

Sometime soon, it will stop being news that an ancient franchise is aiming for a comeback through Kickstarter, but some games just tug at your heart strings, and Tex Murphy does that for me.

Dubbed Project Fedora, the latest attempt to bring the FMV-laden Tex Murphy back comes via Big Finish Games, co-founded by Tex Murphy’s creative masters, Chris Jones and Aaron Conners.

The Kickstarter won’t begin until May 15, but following some Internet scuttlebutt, Big Finish Games has announced that it’s actually happening. The studio is looking for backer reward ideas, which you can submit through its website.

Big Finish Games claims plans were already in motion to bring Tex Murphy back, but Kickstarter prompted it to contemplate making something much bigger than had originally been scoped out.

“With the recent Kickstarter success stories for other Adventure Games--Double Fine Adventure & Wasteland 2--we saw an opportunity to create a game of a larger scale,” reads the announcement. “So, with that in mind, we hope to bring the next Tex Murphy game to an a much bigger, dare I say, epic level--more actors, locations, broader stories and yes, even meaningful, varied story paths.”

Look, as long as there’s a ton of FMV, I don't care what you do. Oh, but seriously, make it more like Under a Killing Moon than Overseer. See? They’ve already got me.

Absolutely amazing news. I loved the Tex Murphy games, they were FMV adventures done right. These guys are legit vets with a track record and they've recently gotten back into the industry as a very small development company. Aaron Connors also wrote the script to Amped 3, which is pretty crazy.

I can't wait to support this project and hope there's enough out there like me that feels as strongly about this IP. No publisher will ever fund this game. Kickstarter is making some really outlandish dreams of mind come true, never thought I'd see the day.

Hell yeah! Under a Killing Moon is easily one of my favorite games. Pandora Directive and Overseer weren't quite as good, but they were still enjoyable.

Part of me doesn't want to stay this out loud, but dude. Funcom? Longest Journey? That kickstarter needs to happen, because I don't think we're ever going to get a sequel to Dreamfall without it. C'mon Ragnar -- let's make an adventure game!

Ragnar Tornquist secured a sponsorship from the Norwegian government to make Dreamfall Chapters a while ago, so I don't think it's a lack of money that's holding the project back. Hopefully they'll focus on finishing that once The Secret World ships.

Are you listed on the credits if you donate to these projects?

If the reward for your contribution indicates it, yes. Otherwise, probably not.

The rewards are entirely dependent on the person heading the project. A lot of them include being thanked in the credits (or sometimes having an in-game statue, NPC, shrine, name on a wall of something, location, etc). Everything varies from project to project. And, of course, you have to be a bit discerning in what you pledge toward. Double Fine is probably a safe bet (though we'll have to wait a year or so and see how it really turns out). Someone you've never heard of making a little indie game or a small studio? Maybe not a huge risk, but there are no certainties in life - so maybe think twice before pledging $100 or something.

I'm happy to hand over $10 or $15 to almost anyone that strikes my fancy, because the successes will outweigh the failures and at $15 each, it'll be hard to end up on the losing end (think of how many $60 titles you've bought that turned out to be complete shit).

As for credits, I've got my name in a few games. None from Kickstarter, though. The most recent is probably Frozen Synapse (the strategic turn-based tactical shooter). I didn't even know about it until someone asked me why my name was in it, so that was amusing.

Apparently someone started a Kickstarter campaign to buy Kickstarter for nineteen million dollars. For a contribution of $100, the guy promises to personally autograph your Kickstarter.

I've never heard of Tex Murphy before, does that make me a philistine? Well I'm in love anyway, despite our age gap. Here's hoping the Kickstarter trend doesn't dilute and die off too early.

Just nobody give any money to that colossally moronic lottery winner trying to make an MMORPG who has 47 "idea men", and one programmer lined up to help him.

I don't even understand how that guy made it through the Kickstarter vetting process. That guy could have a real chance in gaming, if he used his wealth to found a tiny indie studio and made a handful of little projects until one or two of them hit it big. Start small. Build up a reputation and some games under your belt. Then go big. That he would even consider an MMO (something that can rarely be done on anything but a AAA budget -- and even then usually fails) shows how naive he is.

That said, he's somehow at more than $20,000. Including two $10k pledges (probably himself and a friend/family member he's plending $10k to himself through). Anyway, it's good for a chuckle.

The idea of FMV games always sounds good in conversation but the implementation is usually mediocre. I'll keep a look out on the project but unfortunately I won't be giving them any money upfront.

I would be much more interested in funding the creation of the FMV game based on 2011's GOTY videos from Giant Bomb.

I love that. The best part is, it's not entirely ridiculous. I bet there are a ton of people like myself who would say "it's worth my $10 for a chuckle" and then, next thing you know, so many people thought it was funny enough that he actually wound up being funded. The only downside might be if by his project reaching the point of being successful, Kickstarter was re-valued at a much higher amount, rendering his kickstarter funded - but undoable. :)

Anyway, I'm putting $10 in on that when it goes live. Why not?

"Kickstarter to fund the website to promote our kickstarter to buy Kickstarter.com."

Now you're funding with portals.

Reminds me of my facebook joke "By the time 1,000,000 people join this group I will have forgotten about it." Had maybe 30 people last time I looked. Might have more now, who the hell knows. I forgot about it already...

I know the Tex Murphy games are actually pretty well received. Hardcore Gaming covered them pretty well, and GOG users like them well enough. But I sure as shit haven't played any, and don't count on doing so any time soon. Still, I'll probably pitch in a few bucks, just to see what happens here.

Btw, it's weird to scroll down to the comment box/bottom of the page and see "Gamespot/Giantbomb/Comic Vine" on the bottom now.

I'm going to Tested and Screened now just to make things right.

They were great. Tex Murphy works where others don't, like the ones Vinny and Dave have played on this site, because the writing is pretty good and the games don't take themselves seriously.
