id Bringing Rage To iPhone, Kicking Off Massive QuakeCon Sale

Just about everything but Doom 4 got a mention in today's QuakeCon opening number.

Dallas-based event QuakeCon 2010 kicked off with a familiar announcement: id Software will not be showing Doom 4. There was more hope than usual for a glimpse of the elusive new Doom title, especially as Rage's development winds down, but alas it wasn't to be this year.

It wasn't all sobering news. In the opening, id veteran Todd Hollenshead announced that all of the studio's iPhone games are either .99 cents or $1.99 for the duration of QuakeCon. He also promoted id and Bethesda's big Steam pack, which combines 27 classic titles from both studios--the newest being Fallout 3--for the price of $70. In addition to this, Bethesda is selling The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion GOTY Deluxe for $8.49. The full listing of the Steam pack and the iPhone deals are below. There are some pretty great deals in there.

After Todd left the stage, Bethesda's PR guru Pete Hines took his place to announce a new : parent company Zenimax has acquired Arx Fatalis and BioShock 2 developer Arkane Studios. Hines said that Bethesda and Arkane are working on an unannounced game together, but they aren't ready to talk about it at the moment. Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio then came on for a brief period to introduce himself and thank the audience.

== TEASER ==Then, legendary programmer and co-founder of id Software, John Carmack, took the stage. One thing about Carmack: most of what he shares with an audience isn't what we would normally deem newsworthy. He tends to jump from topic to topic, zeroing in on what interests him. It's an unorthodox sort of presentation, but one that gives a real sense of his motivations and brilliance.

Carmack hinted before the show that he had something new to show folks. And he did: Rage for the iPhone 4. The tech demo he presented--an early version of the game stripped of gameplay mechanics--looked beautiful, boasting some of the sharpest visuals seen on any iDevice thus far. Carmack said the game was running at 60 frames per second and he expects it to be released later this year, making it the first version of Rage to make it to market. He added that the engine the game is running on will also work for older versions of the iPhone as well, and that another, more complex Rage title would be available on Apple devices before the full game releases as well.

Anyway, if you're more interested in cheap games than the ruminations of one of game development's most revered minds, read on.

I can't tell if you guys added the video to the article or not, it could be my web-browser acting up, anyway I watched the video on another site and I just have to say that what they have achieved in regards to getting Rage on the iPhone is absolutely mind-blowing.

Pretty awesome deal. I'm gonna stay away from it though. I don't need more games right now.

I'm so happy that Steam bundle is €70 so I can't get it on a whim, especially since I have Fallout 3 and Call Of Cthulhu for the Xbox already.

Say what you will about Brad Nicholson, but he told me literally everything I needed to know about this article in the very first sentence, and I appreciate that.

My god, what a package.  Lucky for them, I've become an id fanboy since recently reading Masters of Doom.  Recommended reading, for sure.
