Irrational Would Love it if You'd Party With BioShock Infinite's New '1999 Mode'

Don't worry, Ken Levine and company won't hurt you. They just want their hardcore fans to have some fun!

I was dreaming (or half-awake, really) when I wrote this, so please do forgive me if I go astray.

Upon waking this morning, BioShock fans were greeted with a new tidbit of information regarding Irrational's upcoming continuance of the series, BioShock Infinite. Specifically, Irrational unveiled a brand new mode for the game, one steeped in heavy challenge and permanent consequence that's designed to give the more hardcore fans a more intense overall experience.

Elizabeth appears to have found the new '1999 mode' a tad daunting.
Elizabeth appears to have found the new '1999 mode' a tad daunting.

Titled "1999 mode," this new addition exists wholly separate from the normal story mode, and allows players to experience an environment in which their weapon specialties, upgrades, and moral decisions will have extremely specific, and extremely rigid consequences on how the player is able to progress within the game. Even respawning will be tied to resource management in this mode, and if you run out of the resources necessary to come back to life, your game will officially be over.

The mode is, of course, not actually a direct reference to a Prince song, but rather a hearkening back to the days of System Shock, a mode that Ken Levine describes as something for the old school Irrational fans.

We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots,” said Levine. “In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.

The idea for 1999 mode came from player surveying. According to Levine, more than half of the players surveyed wanted permanent consequences to their decisions made in-game.

94.6 percent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their BioShock gameplay experience; however, 56.8 percent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better.

1999 mode is, of course, completely optional, and anyone who just wants to sky-hook their way around the city of Columbia all willy-nilly without worrying about consequences will have the ability to do so. For those who like a bit more in the way of serious business when they play their games, 1999 mode sounds like a perfectly reasonable, if also slightly daunting-sounding option.

So, who among you will take the 1999 challenge? Are you looking to party? Or are you ready to fight?

@david3cm: Actually, it's because this mode will have actual consequences for death and decisions will be meaningful and irreversible that I am reminded of Dark Souls. I didn't mean "that sounds hard". Also I've been playing a lot of Dark Souls lately so a lot of things remind me of Dark Souls.

Dark Souls.

That the game mode isn't directly related to involving Prince is a travesty.

I'm really hoping they can also put in 1999 style graphics for that mode. That would be amazing.

i will play it on normal first, then go back and try 1999 mode. i did love the game play of Bioshock, but the thing im most looking forward to from infinite is the story. Kind of like the first Matrix film, Bioshock's story had a lot going on underneath. if you wanted to dig for those elements you were rewarded, but if you just wanted an FPS with some lite RPG mechanics it was that too.

If it's no harder than Bioshock 1 on Hard without Vita Chambers, then count me in since that was pretty easy.

It's nice that they have this mode in this game, Bioshock caught a lot of heat when it first came out because warping back to vita-chambers at death didn't seem like a harsh enough death penalty. That got patched in the PC version for sure.

Sounds cool, but is it pretty much the story with different mechanics and permadeath or an original storyline?

I was really hoping for an all night dance party with the characters from the game. But this mode sounds a hell of a lot better.

It's great that Irrational wants to put back the difficulty that was inherent in the System Shock games into Bioshock Infinite, but in System Shock 2 I thought that my shotgun going from pristine to broken in like 6 shots was a dumb idea, and if it's in Bioshock Infinite my opinion won't change.

I will only play 1999 mode if it comes with era-appropriate character skins. Booker must have his hair parted down the middle and be wearing a "No Fear" t-shirt. Elizabeth must dress like Courtney Love.

Yeah, I think I'll try that one. And if it turns out too frustrating I'll just switch to "modern games are for babies" mode.

I do not grasp how ppl...some ppl bringing it up.. and not all who are just kidding, do not understand it's about SS2, not a song. That's why reading, not what GB puts in a header.

But I am having trouble understanding part of this, in that SS2 had rejuvenation, also. Totally. Yes it had specialization(I did the ols standard, Marine) and thinking out where your..I forget what they were called, but your new innate abilities and supporting skills went. SS 2 was much-much more dedicated to this than Bioshock.. Also gun repair and other factors played in,..rpg man! If this is the 1999 mode, I'll love it and wish it the norm. Story happened big-time for SS 2 and I'm sure it will for Infinite, also. But I don't understand what is to scare me off from first play-through, unless they make dying an absolute bitch, that is lose everything, start at the beginning. On the other hand, maybe damage to enemies should not be cumulative if after all you died, rejuvenated or not.

When they say consequences, do they mean ones that affect the plot, or just ones that affect your inventory and (dis)advantages? I can't imagine them going down the ME3 road, but it makes it sound like it's going to affect something other than just combat and difficulty.

@NickTheZombie: I didn't mean it like that! I just meant that compared to other games that are known for their difficulty, Bioshock doesn't compare so there's no reason not to give it a try.

Even though I probably won't play the mode, I love the fact that they've included it. It seems like they really listened to their fans and are doing their best to give us what we really want. Big respect points.

So is this 1999 mode a similar sort of thing to new Vegas' hardcore mode, where you play the same story but its harder(and this sounds more fun than just harder)

Please don't bring that crap here... Those kinds of images take up so much space and say so very little... In fact, nothing that you couldn't say with a few words and evoke the exact same meaning to those familiar with the meme. Those unfamiliar wouldn't get it even if the image was present, anyway, so it makes no difference.
