Killzone 3 Officially Announced

Jetpacks are the new Nolan North.

Unsurprisingly, the big boy Killzone series won't stop at two. This morning Sony Computer Entertainment's European wing confirmed the existence of Killzone 3, a Guerrilla Games-developed sequel to the original PS3-exclusive FPS. According to the official European release materials, the game will ship with Stereoscopic 3D and will feature "more vehicles, explosive high-powered weapons, and a vicious close-combat system."

It's also set to be a direct sequel, kicking off right where the previous title left me waiting for resolution (and a cure for end boss frustration). As told by the press release, after the big baddies' death, a nuclear bomb is detonated in the Helghan capital. This puts a stop to the ISA push, and more importantly, your chances of backup. It'll be just you (Sev) and company versus the evil, militant Helghast--sans a Pip-Boy and cute Vault apparel in Killzone 3.

This probably isn't the first time you've heard about this game. Killzone 3 has been rumored as a 2010 release since the dinosaurs started huffing cosmic smog. More recently, though, it was revealed that GamePro was set to feature the title in an upcoming issue of its gaming mag. As was leaked, yes, jetpacks will indeed have a place in the game. And do look forward to thrusting around in bigger levels. The Euro press release boasts that the environments in Killzone 3--which will apparently be a digital smorgasbord of exotic locations ranging from snow, to jungle, to nuclear wasteland--will be ten times larger than the ones in Killzone 2.

The US PlayStation blog threw out a couple of screenshots for the newly announced game this afternoon. As you can see, it's quite pretty.

No release date was mentioned, but again, Killzone 3 has been rumored as a possible 2010 release. You're ready for more, right?

It's going to be really weird having a Killzone game come out so soon after the last one, especially after waiting 5 years between KZ1 & 2.
In fact, after looking at the screenshots and hearing the setup of the story, this looks like more of an expansion pack...

According to Weekend Confirmed, there will be some announcements, but not much to care about.

I thought they already hated it for being popular? And aside from ODST Halo has had a pretty solid track record....

I wasn't aware there would be jungle environments, awesome! Large open areas to fight in are a must if this game wants to introduce things like jetpacks and hopefully there will be a lot more vehicle combat in this game. It was a shame we never got the chance to drive the buggies in KZ2 but atleast we got the walkers which I do hope make a return.

Please get the MP right this time (and speed up the SP). Severely punishing new players from the start (confusing multi-tiered maps, limited ammo and guns) destroyed the casual audience leaving only the sadistic / masochistic elite. No fun at all and no competition to MW2 and WaW ... even Resistance 2 was more enjoyable.

The dust, locations and atmosphere were fantastic though - probably the best sound in 5.1 than any other game.

I hope they tighten up the controls, some people liked them but I didn't. The developers said they wanted weighty controls but you can have weighty controls without them being completely unresponsive just look at Bad Company 2.

I didn't really care for Killzone 2... so this doesn't excite me too much.
