Mass Effect 3 to (Finally) Support Same-Sex Love Interests

How the new options will play into existing characters, however...

You can have a relationship with whomever in BioWare's Dragon Age series. Male-male? Female-female? Go for it, adventurer! That's not the case in Mass Effect, a consistent source of criticism against the sci-fi epic. That changes with Mass Effect 3, according to a Tweet from executive producer Casey Hudson.

"Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m&f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game," said Hudson in a surprise update yesterday morning.

As for how that will exactly play out, Hudson isn't saying just yet.

"Some game sites saying 'previously straight chars now available for both m&f [male & female] chars' not necessarily true," he clarified. "Will have some new LI's [love interests] in #ME3."

Whether or not you ever encounter these new relationships options in Mass Effect 3, it's great to see the company responding to something players have been asking for. Having the option is what's important.

 There should be an option for him to take care of himself.

This.

My only problem with this, is why Bioware all of a sudden feels like there needs to be "gayness" in everything they do now. I mean, not every movie out there has a gay main character, or even a gay side character. Sometimes a movie comes out where there is no homosexuality in it whatsoever. Sometimes a movie comes out that's all about homosexuality. At times it has both, other times it has neither.
Point being, not everything has to have homosexuality, and I'm not sure why Bioware thinks it does. They must have higher ups that are gay or something, right? Or they are being paid gobs of money by GLAAD to look like they support gays.

The other ridiculous thing is the fact that all of a sudden Shepherd is gay? We go through two lengthy games where he shows no signs of homosexuality, and in fact is a lot like a "Han Solo" type character that is lovin the ladies. Yet all of a sudden in Mass Effect 3 there are going to be people that come along that make him want to be gay? I mean come on people...

Yeah I don't think that's going to be a problem, guy.

I hope they accurately record the sound of 4 Krogan testicals slapping Shepard's ass.

Yep, exactly... I hate how I'd sneeze, and accidentally hit a button, and now all of a sudden I'm straddling Anders face.

I quit playing that game partly because of how contrived the homosexual romance stuff was.

This isn't a movie, it's a video game.  It is a video game where you play a character who is modeled off of the player's behaviors.  If a player wants a gay character they should not be restricted from that choice.  Also, "no signs of homosexuality?"  Really?  What signs are you looking for?

Chill the fuck out gamers. This is not something you should care about.

I always knew space was Fierce!  :)

wait.... is this what Bioware meant by "opening up the series to a wider audience?"

Hey people, don't like it? Then don't buy it! Then you can blame your homophobia for missing out on playing a great game.

My female characters have always been able to pursue love interests with female NPCs. I suppose it's a double standard if 2 males can't have a fictitious in game relationship too.

Edited by ptys

Lets hope my Fem-Shep gets more options than boring cadet Jacob, Garrus or Thane who I had to take as a consolation cause I stuffed up on dialogue option in the beginning. No same sex for me personally though, but good for you if that's what you're craving!

People complained about this? That's a little ridiculous. Not that I mind this, nor should anyone because you can simply ignore it if you want to, but it seems a little stupid that people complained about this.

Why is "finally" in the title of the story?  You are somehow implying that EVERYONE was calling for this change?

Where are all these people that were losing sleep over this Patrick?
Posted by Lucidlife
@JoshyLee: What you are seeing is that there are nowhere near the amount of people in support of the gay agenda that the media wants you to believe there are.

You learned something today.  Good for you.

@Lucidlife
I mean, since Patrick wrote the article, I'd take it to mean that Patrick believes it was overdue. Nowhere is it mentioned / implied that he speaks for everyone.

In the article, the "constant source of criticism" comment comes from the fact that, especially on BioWare forums, there were a lot of people that didn't like the disparity in relationship options between the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series'.
Posted by Lucidlife
@johnLongview: He doesn't clarify either way so you are just guessing yourself.  Personally, I will take it to mean he is telling me there has been an outcry for this.  Yes, it could also mean he personally believes it should have been added long ago.  Either way, what I said fits.

Posted by johnLongview
@MAST
Is there any other developer that gives the player these options? It's not like video games depict homosexuality as frequently as films do, so having a couple series of games that allow for it is a step in the right direction, right?

Also, with regard to the "accidental relationship consummation by sneezing," couldn't the same be said about straight relationships in those games (as well as most others)? The end result pretty much always comes down to a final button press of "yes" or "no," so it's not like BioWare was trying to trick you into having that sort of relationship.

@Lucidlife
I think that his comments about the "consistent source of criticism" and "it's great to see the  company responding to something players have been asking for" are the "outcry" you're looking for.

With regards to your reply to @JoshyLee: no, what he's seeing is that people who aren't sympathetic to gays and their "agenda" are quite vocal about it. I'm rather jealous of him, as pretty much all the people I've met who are anti-gay won't shut the hell up about it.
Posted by smcn

Perspective: A few decades ago there would have been an outcry about Jacob being a love interest.

This. I think you just nailed it.

Could not care less either way, because clearly the issue we should all care about is whether Bioware will finally wise up and stop having crew members wear their battle armour around the ship every day.  Shepard doesn't do it, so take a few hours of dev time and give everyone actual clothes to wear when you walk around your ship.  Just sayin.

Why is this newsworthy?

Posted by johnLongview
@Brendan
Nuh uh. The REAL issue is giving us an option to wear helmets that DON'T APPEAR DURING CUTSCENES.

The sad thing is that addressing both of our issues would take a few guys like a day or two, but, sadly, they probably will not be.

Can't say I care too much. I don't mind it, but a part of me just thinks this is mere pandering to the whingy gits at the Bioware Social Forums who think that a true roleplaying experience means that you have the ability to hump everything in the galaxy up to the Reapers.

Posted by SadPanda

Just so long as it isn't as ridiculous as it was in Dragon Age 2. If you said anything vaguely supportive to Anders he assumed you were inviting him to the pants party. Understanding/positive dialogue options do not automatically equate to a chat up line.

Posted by simian

Finally. My only hope is that Jack & Liara are still on the party so they can blame themselves for Sheppard suddenly switching teams.

Posted by Pr1m8

im glad they have done this, but i really hope they make a way of being nice to someone without suddenly flirting. the way male- female relationships are shown in game is kinda disturbing and if every relationship is going to be like that it would be a shame.

my shep is trying to be nice to people and keeping the team happy but then suddenly he's in a love octagon. i really wish you could set your sights on one person and then have a much harder time wooing them than just picking the nice option in random convos till they all try to jump you.

Edited by zodiac_motherfucker

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST JUST MAKE EVERYBODY HAPPY AND MAKE SEXUAL PREFERENCE A CHOICE AT THE BEGINNING WHEN YOURE BUILDING YOUR CHARACTER. CHICKS DUDES BOTH OR NEITHER

AND YEAH CALL ME A HOMOPHOBE YOU FUCKING PC BITCHES BUT IN DRAGON AGE 2 I HAD ANDERS COMING ONTO ME LIKE BOGS FUCKING DIAMOND FROM SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION AND THAT BULLSHIT PUT ME OFF HIS CHARACTER ALTOGETHER

Posted by sickVisionz
@Abyssfull: I remember drinking with her in ME2 and hoping the game would let me try her on some GILF shit.   Sadly, that wasn't an option.

On topic, cool for those who want it.  I'll be sticking with man shepard and Tali or femshep and liara, unless some new kick ass lesbian is introduced.
Posted by Eijikun

"A consistent source of criticism"? Really?

Are all games now expected to feature homosexuality as a matter of course? If so, why? No, listen. Why?

Posted by Moofey

This better not be what they delayed Mass Effect 3 for.
