Microsoft Unveils Kodu

Research project turned Xbox 360 game creation software pops up at CES.

The menus appear to be almost icon-based.
The menus appear to be almost icon-based.
You might remember a bit of rumbling about a Microsoft project named "Boku" a month or so back. Well, that project's been made officially official, and it got a name change to the much more user-friendly "Kodu."

Kodu is a set of visually oriented game creation tools that Microsoft will be releasing as a downloadable "game" for the Xbox 360 this Spring. The tools are icon-based and designed to be accessible, such that children would be able to create their own little games by setting up the rules of the world.

In fact, the team building Kodu are attempting to build it to be "accessible for children and enjoyable for anyone." Creating games will involve selecting objects, assigning behavior, building scoring mechanisms using simple equations, and so on. At the keynote, Microsoft had a 12-year-old girl named Sparrow quickly throw together something where a machine spit out objects while two robots tried to get them for points.

From the release:
ā€œKoduā€ created playgrounds are expressed in physical action-reaction terms, using basic concepts like vision, hearing and time to control your characterā€™s behavior. Players can start their own unique ā€œKoduā€ created playgrounds from scratch or, if they arenā€™t in the mood to create, they can choose from several pre-loaded levels for quick play. With almost 200 different game-creation building blocks to choose from, the opportunities are endless.
So it sounds like they're trying to make something that can be used quickly for very simple concepts, but also building a system with enough depth to allow for a great deal of variety. Rather than coming out of one of the Microsoft Game Studios internal teams or a third-party, Kodu is being developed by Microsoft Research, which has been testing out stuff along these lines since at least 2006.

Kodu will launch in the Spring and will somehow be positioned alongside the XNA-based Community Games Channel, which strikes me as a little strange.

This sounds like they are trying to break into that casual market that the Wii already owns. I wouldn't be surprised if MS has motion controls in their next-gen platform.

Cheapass LBP clone rushed out the door to try and combat LBP. Ā Too bad LBP wasn't the huge sensation Sony wanted it to be. Ā Won't change the fact that this game will probably suck, though.

Boku/kodu has infact been in the work before LBP it was talked about before LBP was ever talked about.

Please tell me that they said "Come on now, Little Sparrow!" in a British accent when they invited the girl on stage.

I doubt this is meant to compete with LBP as it was being used as a research tool. Microsoft will probably just test the market and see if people actually want to create their own games within the game or just play the pre-made ones

"Cheapass LBP clone rushed out the door"

Err its been in MS research for the last 3 years..

This is a great way to introduce actual programming concepts in a visual way sounds very interesting and from what ive been told very very flexible in what it can do.Ā  This is a great initiative to introduce that right way of thinking when creating games at an early age without the technical knowledge needed to write code.

Im sure most of the doubters dont really know what it is, its really based around looking at creating a game in a different way so to make a charaacter fire a gun you simply select the 'Character > Controller > A Button > Gun' the engine then knows when you press the a button on the controller to fire the gun.

Kodu = Estonian for "Home"

Hmm... I wonder after Seiklus if Estonian language is going to take over gaming world.

At those calling this a LBP clone..Ā  This has been in development since well before we knew about LBP, and it's not even really the same thing.Ā  It's designed to make creating games for XNA easier, similar to something like RPG Maker.Ā  If you're going to bash something, at least read about what it is first, instead of jumping to conclusions.

LBP was NOT the first game to focus on user generated content, nor is it even the best.

Sounds cool, but I wanna know how much it will cost to get my hands on it. Hopefully not some 100 dollar yearly subscription fee iike with XNA, right?

To me is was a lot more like Alice (http://www.alice.org/)Ā  or Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/) thanĀ  LittleBigPlanet. But I guess when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.

I will buy this game for TWO reasons

1)Ā  because SEGA is to blind, deaf, and dumb for not releasing Chu Chu Rocket on XBLA.

2)Ā  There is no Hungry Hungry Hippo-ish type of zany multiplayer game on XBLA.

so with this type of game, i can finally (hopefully) try to make my own version of those two titles.

Yo Jaded, where does that quote come from? I enjoyed it thoroughly.Ā

IfĀ LittleĀ big Planet is any indication of my interest in creation then I am most likelyĀ going to skip this download. I try to be creative, but just end up making large devices that look like spagetti fighting with a dog on the way to the zoo where I enjoy going when my mom leaves on vacation with one of her various lovers and I'm stuck here and have nothing to do and.... lost my point. I think the decision to release this as a "game" is related to Little Big Planet.Ā  Just like the new dashboard, they are rushing something out to try to appeal to everyone.Ā  The first panel of this comic to sums up what I think they are trying http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/7/16/Ā  I mean this thing could have been around for ten years, and I would still say this, because of LBP Microsoft wants to capture the user-generated content market.
Just because I think that though, does not mean I think this "game" will suck or anything.Ā  But if LBP wasn't around, I think this would have stayed an in-company program.

Seems interesting. I don't know if it will have the same impact as LBP though.
Also, this seems like Preschool type stuff, based on that screenshot.
