Monday Night Combat Just Got Super-er

Uber Entertainment is bringing Monday Night Combat to the PC as a free-to-play title.

If you were one of the many players that helped make Monday Night Combat a surprise hit upon its release on Xbox Live Arcade last year, you may find yourself interested in developer Uber Entertainment's latest project: Super Monday Night Combat for the PC.

More championship belts in everything, please.
More championship belts in everything, please.

The primary difference in this iteration of Monday Night Combat is that it's a free-to-play title. Anyone who downloads it will be able to play the breadth of the game for precisely zero dollars. Like other FTP titles, Uber plans to make its revenue off microtransactions for items and specific content updates.

There will be changes to the gameplay, as well. The team-based shooter will move from a six-on-six model to five-on-five, and include an all-new leveling system, designed to improve players beyond the marginal scope of the skill upgrades found in the Xbox 360 version. New environments, characters, and other upgrades will also be included.

There is a full, lengthy preview of Super Monday Night Combat up over at Kotaku, if you're into that sort of thing. Considering the success of other FTP titles like League of Legends and the recently transitioned Team Fortress 2, this seems like a wise, competitive move from Uber. What say you, Monday Night Combat fans? Will you check out this updated version on your PC? Or are you perfectly happy with the XBLA version?

I'm getting the impression from Alex's wording that he doesn't realize Monday Night Combat came out on PC sometime after the XBLA version.  I.E., this isn't the first the PC will have seen of the MNC franchise, as this article seems to imply.

You expect a tiny indie developer to pay for bandwidth costs that their publisher/platform holder charges them?

Well, it would be nice if developers prepared for the finances required to support their titles. Wouldn't it? Anyways, here's to Uber, I hope they keep going strong because they seem like a good team. Maybe they'll come back to consoles, or maybe I'll find myself with a decent gaming PC someday in the future.
THOSE FINANCES SHOULDN'T BE REQUIRED, THAT IS HIS ARGUMENT Also you don't need a gaming PC to play MNC... A decent PC these days is cheaper than a current console and you don't have to pay a subscription fee to play online.

Show me a decent PC that cost what i paid for my PS3, $250, you can't.

I am not shelling out $600+ for a gaming PC just to play some games in my living room, it's why i HAVE my consoles, i have a beast of a gaming rig in my home office, which i play SC2 on, will play D3 on and maybe BF3, i prefer console gaming it's cheap, you can't build a $250-300 PC from scratch and play high end games.

@Styl3s: "you can't build a $250-300 PC from scratch and play high end games." You can do that easily, it may be lacking an optical drive but then again that's why we have Steam. And why exactly do we have to do it from scratch? The best part about gaming PC's is the components are so delightfully interchangeable. Surely you own an average PC too right? So lets add this all up PC - (Estimated $300), PS3 - ($300), And that's only one console and one very weak OEM(If it was custom built you could easily assemble a $300 PC that could perform like a console plus provide a usable PC for general use) PC. OR you can have a $600 gaming and productivity powerhouse which you can easily output to your TV and use it like a console, albeit at a higher resolution with Anti-aliasing and as many control options as you want. Exclusives really aren't worth having a considerably worse third party videogame experience. Seriously I can't think of a single reason to purchase a console.

They should put this version on PSN now. It could join the lone other F2P offering on PS3 currently, Free Realms. Sony's console can do it; why don't more F2P games come to the PS3?

And i can't think of a single reason to buy a PC. I own a high end gaming PC and the only game i play is SC2.

I prefer console gaming, i prefer the console exclusives over PC exclusives

LBP, Infamous, Uncharted, MGS, Gears, Halo, KZ, Demons souls, dark souls, heavy rain, ratchet series, yakuza series etc. i can keep going, past 5 years the only 2 PC exclusives i have cared about were SC2 and Witcher 2, Witcher 2 is coming to consoles. I am not wasting $600+ to put a half ass pc in my living room when i can just put a disc in my ps3 or 360, i don't CARE about graphics, i don't CARE about keyboard/mouse, i CARE about gameplay, sorry i don't give a shit about seeing a tree 3000 feet away, worse experience? how so? i absolutely fucking love third party games on consoles, im not a jaded shallow pc elitist, i don't need super eyeball exploding graphics and the ability to see a goddamn cockroach from 8 miles away, just because graphics matter to you doesnt mean console gamers have a horrible experience, my experience with deus ex and every other third platform is just as good as yours on a maxed out PC because it has the EXACT same gameplay.

Theres a reason i own 4 pc games and over 150 PS3/360 games combined, don't tell me your experiences are superior or im having a worse experience because thats fucking bullshit and makes you sound like an asshole.

@Styl3s: Playing a game on a console is like playing with both of your hands chained together. Playing on a PC is like breaking those chains. PC gaming is unhinged gaming, the ultimate in choice and flexibility. Whether or not you care, you cannot deny that it is better.

It doesn't matter what your preference is, the experience can always be better on a PC.  Better fidelity, better controls (You can use literally any controller you want, including a Wii remote if you're crazy.), better framerate, can play it on a monitor or a TV, any way you want.  What you prefer is to live in your own little bubble.  That's fine.  No one's gonna pop it for you, don't worry.

But we don't care that you prefer consoles.  I prefer not to spend a "small" amount of cash on the actual system and then pay out my ass for games unless I feel like waiting for a year after release.  Oh, and those lovely proprietary peripherals, man, a 250GB hard drive for only $50!  What a deal!  I can get 2TB for $100 and use it for all my games, not just my 360 ones.

You don't have to like reality, though.  Lord forbid you "lug around" a PC rather than set up your living room properly, like someone who lives in the fucking 21st century.

Yes it does matter, experience is based on preference and the person, just because your experience is better on the PC doesn't make it so for other people, just because YOU think keyboard/mouse is better at controls doesn't make it a fact, that control option is based purely on preference and opinion, it's stupid pc elitist like you that give gamers a bad name, get off your high fucking horse and just enjoy games, i live in the 21st century, i PREFER console gaming, i have a BETTER experience on consoles, if you think otherwise well then i don't give a shit because you are a random person on the internet who means nothing to me, doesn't effect me and you don't have a right or the ability to tell me what my experience is, you can't tell me i will have a better experience on PC when i have a high end gaming PC and PREFER my gaming on consoles ].

It's all PERSONAL PREFERENCE and OPINIONS, i am sick and tired of you high horse pc elitist nerds, it's people like you that make me want to stay away from all video game forums period because you people you are all superior and that if it isn't PC gaming its complete garbage and the only way to play is on a PC, bullshit. BULL-SHIT.

My reality is called real life, i have a life, i don't get a lot of time to play video games and when i do i enjoy my console gaming more, if you can't comprehend the definition of personal preference or opinions then i feel sorry for you, one day you will grow up.

Well, MNC already is clearly inspired by DOTA / tower defense anyway.

Other than that, I'm not sure I understand this comment.  What other games are you talking about, other than DOTA clones?

Clearly you have a life and are super-busy, writing up essays on why you prefer consoles to argue on the internet and all.  ;)  I never said mouse and keyboard was better (Though it is infinitely better for shooters, regardless of opinion, because thumbsticks have physically limited movement.) I said the control OPTIONS were better, as in, I can play a game with a PS3, 360, Wii, or PC gamepad of my choice.  Or a flight yolk or a racing wheel or anything else.  You're so angry about this, why?  Am I making console gaming less enjoyable for you?  Are us "PC nerds" ruining your coolness factor?  Because I can clearly tell, you're one pretty cool dude.

I guess this is explains the apparent abandonment of the fans that kicked started MNC.  They're too busy making a f2p game for pc gamers to be bothered with updating the original xbox version.

@Forum_User: Kind of a late reply here. Well it would seem the Warhammer:AOR devs are re-appropriating their MMO into a five on five combat arena thingy similar to DOTA(Minus the creeps I believe). Also I guess you're correct, I'm more surprised at the huge number of free to play games that exclusively feature five on five player counts, as far as actual DOTA clones go I can think of a dozen of the top of my head. Its amazing how a fairly simplistic mod for Warcraft 3 of all things is having such an affect on the development decisions of multi million dollar companies.

@TheTelePlus: Actually, the original MNC had creeps, except they were just "bots" that you could either farm for in-match currency or escort to damage the enemy's Moneyball. I expect they'll be here too in some capacity, though I wouldn't be surprised if they just decided to replace them with some other kind of creeps for the sequel.
