You'll be able to pick from two different special editions and, if you reserve your game, you'll get laced with some pre-order exclusive DLC.
Warner Bros has announced a release month for the upcoming Mortal Kombat, pegging the fighting game down as an April 2011 release, as opposed to the seasonal "Spring" listing it had before. But super eager fans can venture outside to major retailers as early as this afternoon in order to procure a pre-order ticket for one of two different special edition bundles, as well as retailer-tied character and fatality DLC.
The first of these special edition bundles is the "Kollector's Edition," which features Sub-Zero and Scorpion figurines, an art book, an "exclusive" classic Mortal Kombat costume skin, and themed avatar costumes. The other edition is the "Tournament Edition," which features a limited-release "portable fight stick" and another classic Mortal Kombat costume skin, as well as themed avatar costumes.
Pre-ordering either of these special editions, or even the vanilla edition of the pseudo-reboot, will get you additional "exclusive access" to DLC at Amazon, GameStop or Best Buy. I've created a little list here for your reading pleasure:

The DLC fatalities appear in addition to the two character-specific fatalities that each character will have by default. Amazon is the first of these retailers to release an image of this pre-order DLC. Check out Reptile's classic look:
In other Mortal Kombat news, God of War's Kratos was confirmed as a PS3-exclusive character at the Spike VGAs. According to WBIE, he'll have his own move set, fatality, and fighting arena. NetherRealm's Ed Boon spoke briefly about Kratos' inclusion in a recent press release. "We could not be more excited to have Kratos in the new Mortal Kombat, since we've always felt he would fit perfectly into our universe and can't wait for Mortal Kombat and God of War fans to play this game," he said.
Quit yer bitchin', no one's forcing you to buy any of this and it's going to be DLC a month or so after release. Besides who cares about skins that, although look awesome, are probably going to push more of later on anyway.
I would be shocked if they don't take the Street Fighter IV costume approach. Personally the fight-stick stuff and figurines has me more excited. Remember how awesome those early ones were?
I don't get it. Everyone's still gonna have the costumes they would and both their fatalities. This has subtracted nothing from the equation, it's not like they said "everyone will have two fatalities, but to get these ones you'll need to pre-order." Don't like it? Don't preorder. Better yet, get it from a retailer who doesn't have a pre-order bonus (Amazon, Gamefly et al)
Remember when you unlocked content instead of having to chain yourself to a specific retailer and still only come out with one part of a greater whole?
LOL at the people getting pissed about the preorder stuff. Game devs have been doing through out this generation, and this isnt even that bad. All the stuff you get is old content, but in high res. Its the same skins and fatalities, or as they put, "Klassic"
Looking forward to this game a lot. Not enough for those silly pre-order "bonuses" though.
But the whole, "Let's put k's wherever a c should go!" thing is getting obnoxious. After reading "Klassic" 3 times, I'm ready for them to just drop the whole gimmick and call it Mortal Combat already. At least we'd be able to tell this game apart from the first one that way:)
While I'm not going to freak out about this, because it is less than surprising, I don't see the point in pissing all over the predominantly good will you have generated with this sort of move. I guess the incentives that the retailers supply for these deals outweighs the minor loss in new sales, but I will now be buying it used simply on principal.
I refuse to pre-order games after MUA 2. I pre-ordered, paying essentially 10 extra dollars, to get the Juggernaut character. Then they NEVER GAVE ME A FUCKING CODE. Instead, I was supposed to call them for the code, because not only did they not give me one, they fucked up all the codes as well. And they released the character as DLC for $2. I easily would've just bought Juggernaut for the $2 and paid $50 for a used copy, had I known they were going to do that.
And then, to top it off, whoever owned the game didn't renew the license to sell DLC, so they took it all down, and I got fuck-all. Last time I pre-order.
EDIT: and if you have one of those GameStop 10% discount cards on used games, this really isn't worth it, because this content is only worth about $5 total, and you'll save $10 buying used.
And of course, to make the online work, all this content will have to exist on the disc anyway... More bribery to access content you have already paid for.
What a terrible pre-order idea. They better release this all later on as some cheap DLC or something, or else it ends up being such a waste of cool content.
There two special editions of the game, both of which you can pre-order and receive one of the 3 pre-order bonuses. If you just buy the standard edition, you can also pre-order that in 3 different variations.
On top of that, you've got the Kratos version and presumably and Xbox 360 version.
Now does that mean Midway will have a possible fourteen versions of the game for sale?

Pre-order stuff is cool. You're not losing anything. At all. I really can't see why anyone would get upset over this. Odds are they're going to release all that through DLC anyway.

Well seeing as the working title of this was Mortal Kombat 9.... Are you serious though, you think MK has a huge number of games in the series? It has 9 main games and started in '92. In comparison Black Ops was the 7th Call of Duty and the series only started in 2003. Look at the number of Megaman or Mario games...

You're telling me the costumes are just upscaled sprites from the original games? I don't think so, all of it has to have been completely remade for this game. It's all based on that original content, but the whole game is a throwback to the original game, there's no reason it couldn't have been in the game for everyone.
Yes, everyone else is doing the same thing this generation, but that doesn't make it right.
I miss Midway.WB are a bunch of greedy morons and oh the kratos idea IMO is stupid. Boon talks about sticking to the classic feel of the old games but yet they bring in a whole new character from a completely different game way to kill the good vibes man.
Enough with this pre-order crap. It's one thing to have a pre-order bonus, it's another to have different ones (which probably are only available in the US).
@Mr_JPeps: I don't think the 360 will get an exclusive character, apparently it's Sony that actively went after Midway to get them to include Kratos in the game.. Similar to what MS did with Banjo in Sonic All Stars Racing, so it's probably just an extra bonus for the PS3 version.
But Cliffy B has expressed an interest in having Gears characters included.. So maybe for DLC.

The collectors editions simply say they include "DLC and avatar content". It could be completely exclusive content or it could simply be all the store specific stuff rolled into one, in which case I could somewhat forgive them for this.. Assuming the CE's get a worldwide release and aren't limited to North America again.
I have to say that Home pre-order bonuses have nothing on Avatar pre-order bonuses. I will buy this for my PS3 though as both my Virtua Sitck High Grade and the HRAP3 are on that system....and I don't buy fighters for the 360.
Also, I will go for Best Buy or Amazon as they offer bonus cash.
Why all the fuss? Pre-order bonuses are >DLC< meaning it will be available later from your preferred download store. So you get the one you prefer to shop with (Best Buy for me) and you get what they offer. Then in a short time after the game is released you buy and download the other skins/fatalities if you are into that. However, they are KLASSIC, meaning they are the same as MK1 (or 2 as I'm sure Reptile's fatality is the "eat his head" one). The characters in game will still be wearing clothes, just reboot clothes. And they will still kill dudes in extravagent and gorey fashion...just rebooted gorey fashion!
Stop worrying so much, any extra content is good extra content. At least it's not exclusive "gold" weapons which do NOTHING but cosmetic....fatalities are always fun to watch.
This is hilarious! I knew Midway people were desperate for money, but this is quite a step beyond.
And c'mon. It'll be another mediocre MK game you'll regret after a week. Don't let the nostalgia fool you - it's just Mortal Kombat 9, and this series has a history of disappointing. Wait for a review (by someone other than Jeff!).
I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. It's not like these costumes will affect character abilities, or fatalities for that matter. As for Kratos being offered for PS3 players, big whoop? It's not like Xbox players are playing PS3 players online. I don't see anything wrong with a company trying to do something to make some extra money. People tend to forget that these game publishers are businesses, they're goal is to make money, not to appease every gamers' whiny tantrums.
