Fatalities were made popular by the  Mortal Kombat franchise and involve a gruesome (and occasionally comical) death at the end of the final round.

The move originated with the idea of awarding the victor a "free punch" at the end of a match. In the single player ladder, should the player lose to  Shang Tsung, his or her character would be beheaded by Tsung. This concept was eventually programmed for each playable character.
