New Rhythm Game Uses Real Guitar

Seven45 Studios came by with a new guitar controller that doubles as a real guitar, and they've got a game coming to go along with it.

A few representatives from Seven45 Studios, a Boston-based company with a background in entry-level musical instruments, dropped by the Giant Bomb offices last week to show off a very early version of their new game, Power Gig: Rise of the SixString. On the surface, this PS3/360 release appears to be aping the gameplay style of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. You'll use the first five frets to play and the basics of holding down a finger on the appropriate fret and strumming along to master recordings of rock songs.

The catch is in the controller, which also doubles as a real, amplified guitar. Here's one version of the controller:

No Caption Provided
By default, the presence of strings doesn't make any difference in the gameplay, as the game still has you hitting those frets and strumming. But an advanced "chording" mode will place additional notation into some parts of the song. So in addition to telling you which fret you need to hit, a number on the screen will also tell you which string you need to press down. While our hands-off demo made all this look easy, I bet it's actually quite difficult.

On top of using it as a game controller, push in a little chunk that blocks the strings for gameplay mode, plug it into an amp, and use it as a real guitar.

The gents from Seven45 claimed that having a real guitar is helping them make headway with artists and bands that have been put off by the plastic controllers used by Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but as those discussions are still ongoing, no examples of licensed bands have been officially confirmed for the game. The developers also claimed that there would be a big back story and universe to Power Gig that sets it apart from its competition, though I wouldn't say that a rockin' story is the thing that other music games have been missing for all these years.

This all seems like it could serve as a way to teach people how to work with an actual guitar, but the developers seemed to shy away from this aspect of the game, preferring to position Power Gig as a game first and foremost. The game will allow for full band play, complete with drums and vocals, though they weren't talking specifics about a drum controller and didn't want to talk at all about bass players. That's understandable. No one wants to talk about bass players.

Power Gig: Rise of the SixString is currently scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall.

Cool peripheral definitely aimed at guitar-gaming aficionados. And those willing to throw down $150+ on a game. I don't think this game will have the power to break GH/RB's lock on the rhythm gaming market though.

Looks interesting...wish I could just plug my own guitar into it and have a game that genuinely helped me get better since I already have most basics down.
As this is though...could be cool.

Remember when Gibson guitars I think were gonna sue Harmonix because Gibson had claimed that they had made a rock band/guitar hero game ages back but it was all dropped because the game required a real guitar? (well something along those lines anyway)
I wonder if that will come back up...

I don't understand what the market is for this?

Someone that already plays guitar isn't going to want this. Someone planning on learning guitar will need to buy an amp as well, and would probably end up just getting a starter kit. Someone that just wants to play another rhythm game would probably just prefer using a much less cumbersome accessory.

Couldn't they just have it so real guitars work for the game? So we won't have a ton of plastic wasted on this crap anymore?

Learning to play an instrument is difficult even when you have professional help.  If gaming can be utilised in this process that's a very powerful tool.

That is not the aim of this in any way. It says in the article that it is a game, nothing more. The only huge difference is that you can plug this ridiculous toy-like guitar into an amp and play it if you want to.

I learned how to play Green Day songs within a week of picking up a real guitar and I can now play a few Dream Theater songs in my fourth year of playing. I play Rock Band avidly and the Guitar Hero franchise was one of my biggest motivations to become a musician... but this is ridiculous. Rock Band and Guitar Hero are all about precision and fun, while real instruments are about the freedom of creativity. This falls under neither of those categories. Just pick up a Strat pack from your nearest Guitar Center. That's a far better use of your cash.

Wow, I might actually buy this. The fact that I didn't buy all those crappy, plastic instruments for all these years paid off. This seems like a great way to learn guitar, instead of pretending to on a toy.

It sounds interesting, but I'm skeptical. Those looking to play the real guitar would probably be better off actually committing themselves to real lessons, and the very reason Guitar Hero and Rock Band are so popular is because it gives you that sense of making music without really having to do so.

I wonder how it'll do, if it manages to work out well.

Great Idea !
Are those real strings ?
Its commen for people to get extreamly sore fingers from playing guitar to much before theyve built up the padding on there finger tips.

If you are going to buy this cuz "THIS WILL GET ME INTO GUITAR PLAYING :O" then you wont go very far in guitar playing.. Just buy a real instrument and learn, if you really want to.

Que elitist guitar player comments about how this stupid toy couldn't possibly help anybody learn guitar.  I play guitar and I could see how this would help with the basic motor skills required to  play the instrument.  Knowing where to place your hand and holding the strings correctly is one of the biggest parts of early guitar practice.  If they manage to work in real notes in the game then this toy could end up being a lot more than just that.

Would be gnar-bomb if it wasn't being made by the same guys that ship those 40 dollar piece of crap guitars to Costco and Wal-Mart...Which it is.  Like the concept, but that hardware is going to be an issue.  But maybe I'm just a guitar snob as I manage a Guitar Center.  Neat idea though.
