New Xbox 360 Controller With Redesigned D-Pad Out November 9

Putting an end to five years of sanding down the D-pad?

One of the oldest design oddities of the Xbox 360 controller--its concave disc D-pad that proved an ill fit for any game played in two dimensions--is finally getting addressed. Today, Xbox Live director of programming Major Nelson revealed that a new, redesigned wireless controller--bundled complete with Play-and-Charge kit--will arrive on stores shelves on November 9 in the US

What makes this controller noteworthy, other than removing the various colors associated with the controller's face buttons (the rationale being that gray is "stylish"), is what Nelson refers to as the patented "transforming D-pad." By twisting the D-pad itself on the controller, you'll be able to shift that pad between two different design modes: the current, concave "disc" directional pad and a more traditional "plus" shaped pad, raised outside of the "well" on the controller.

And that new raised D-pad looks a little something like this!

How high can you get, D-pad?
How high can you get, D-pad?

Look at how much higher that D-pad! It barely touches the well at all! Finally, I'll be able to pull off Zangief's supers and ultras without have to rely on crazy felines.

If you're looking to get your hands on this new controller, however, you're won't be able to grab it on its ownsome; Microsoft is currently only selling the new controller in a bundle set that includes the 360 Play-and-Charge Kit. However, Microsoft isn't charging any premium for their redesigned controller; like other controller-plus-charging cable bundles, the redesigned 360 controller with Play-and-Charge Kit will retail for $64.99.  And while the new controller design is set to come to the U.S. first, Nelson assures that the new pad will make its way to Europe sometime closer to February.

In fact, you can watch Nelson show off the new controller and its new D-pad in detail in video form.

I feel like it's not a huge leap to say that the environment in which this control pad will really be tested is in fast-paced Super Street Fighter IV play. So, I turn to you fighting game fans out there; you haven't had the chance to try it out yet, but, do you think that, given the the new design, this raised D-pad looks to be a more suitable way to play Street Fighter than the old "disc?"

Really hope they improved the deadzones on the analogsticks too (as in making them smaller and non-noticeable).

Really nifty looking pad. Will look into getting one of these. Preferably a cablebound one, if they chose to make such a thing too.

Oh, thank God.

Also, I like the color scheme a lot. Kind of weird that the face buttons are all different shades of gray, but I can deal.

You know how some people are, like, typophiles? I'm a Controller-o-phile. Kind of obsessed with them, even though I don't really play the kinds of games that necessitate having a raised D-Pad, or whatever.

For that much money you might as well get a stick for SSF4.  Microsoft is really dropping the ball lately.

Too bad it took this long for them to fix a broken dpad, also too bad that no matter what they do Sony's dpad will always be superior for 2d games and fighters which I'll continue to play on my Trey.

Too little too late, also 65 bucks? GTFO

The colour scheme is pretty good, but $65 seems like a lot of money. I'm sure you don't pay that for the wireless controller and the play and charge kit now, I'll probably shake what my mama gave me for now.

the 360's dpad now sits in a "well", and when you move it it will hit the sides of the "well". by letting it be raised up, it fixes most everyone's problem with it who actually has a problem with it. "
Oh, so there's supposed to be an "is" behind "D-pad!" in that sentence. And considering your explanation at that, I'm starting to understand.

Ugh... the problem isn't just external, it's internal too. The plastic base between the dpad and the contacts has to go. Oh Dreamcast dpad... how I miss you...

Yeah but 5 years sounds about right for MS to respond to customer feedback.  Plus we all know that charging an extra $10 is the new thing for MS these days.

still not enough of a change to warrant another controller.   The shoulder pads still are horribly placed and force you to bend your fingers upward and unnaturally. there should be  RB/LB buttons underneath the pad where your index finger rests. thats a way more natural location .

I'm worried that with extended use the d pad may slip between the raised and lowered position on accident while gaming....especially fighters where you have to make half circle motions.  I'm assuming you push down and then rotate in order to switch the pad between modes. Seems like a bad idea to remove the colors also. I was bummed as a kid when I saw Japanese and European versions of the SNES with it's candy-like buttons, while we in the US were stuck with boring purple and lilac colored buttons....plus when teaching a noob how to use a controller it's often easier to tell them what color button to press rather than a letter or shape, IMO.

I might pick it up if it's around 35 without the Play and Charge kit. I hope it doesn't have that joystick problem where it will stick to one direction a bit. I have that on every one of my 3 controllers.

65 bucks plus tax for this controller????!!! That's outrageous, that shouldn't be a premium line product but a replacement for the current crappy controller. But 65 dollars for a controller is extremely ridiculous. Wow, MS, sure is dishing out a lot of expensive services and products these days. I wonder if we're out int the recession and everyone has stable job with generous income yet??!!

Also, what's the point of the twist functionality? Like sometimes you want it to be a good d-pad and sometimes you want it to completely suck? Why would you ever choose to have it completely suck? Terrible idea.

" Also, the problem with the D-Pad had less to do with it's overall shape, and more to do with the fact that it only had 4 directions for input, instead of the full 8 that every other d-pad recognizes. Without diagonal recognition, games that make heavy use of quick movements between directions become difficult.  Did they fix that issue? They make no mention of it. "

What are you talking about? Almost every d-pad since the original NES d-pad has only had 4 sensor pads. The diagonal sensor pads have nothing to do with it. It's the fact that the d-pad slides around in the "well" on the regular controller and hits the wall, making it harder for pad to touch the sensor underneath. I have a sanded and cushioned regular controller that works perfectly now that the d-pad has room to move and is raised with the cushion.

Diagonal input works the same way as on a keyboard. Two directions meet the sensors at once. Here are the hexidecimal numbers sent in the signal when each direction is pressed.

Up: 01
Down: 02
Left: 04
Right: 08

Diagonals combine the two numbers.
Up/Left: 05
Up/Right: 09
Down/Left: 06
Down/Right: 0A    (ten)

The 8 sensor limited release European controllers just had individual sensors to send 5, 6, 9, and 10 directly instead of requiring both directions be pressed in combination.

Rotations are MUCH easier with the thumbstick.

I haven't had a problem with the d-pad, but I really don't like the bland colourless buttons.

Microsoft is pulling out all the stops this year in plan Rape our Userbase's Wallet, bundle only is horseshit. They didn't even bother to design a integrated lithium-ion battery that would have freed it from the annoying battery holder budge.

Now THOSE had shitty d-pads. The Duke was one of the worst controllers ever, even though the analog sticks weren't awful when used with your fingers as joysticks. But even the Type-S controller that replaced it had a better d-pad than the 360 controller.

Nice to hear about something akin to a proper D-Pad,  not too sure about the twisting though. Overall score; Bleh/10

I happen to like the removable battery. The biggest problem I have with the PS3 controller (aside from thumbstick placement) is the inability to pop out the battery to quickly and easily turn off the controller. Yes the bulge is annoying and could use a deeper seating, but the function is necessary for prolonged battery life.

However with my PS3, I have to leave it on and wait for it to time out to power off. This is unacceptable because you would have to buy a whole new controller once the internal battery refuses to charge.

EDIT: Yes I know you can take 15 seconds to do it within the home menu, but not when using Remote Play, which would pretty much be the only time I would even need to.

It's too bad you have to drop $65 and pay for the whole play-and-charge kit.  Why didn't this controller come out with the new Xbox 360?  It looks cool, but I can wait to see how well the new d-pad design holds up...
