New Xbox 360 Controller With Redesigned D-Pad Out November 9

Putting an end to five years of sanding down the D-pad?

One of the oldest design oddities of the Xbox 360 controller--its concave disc D-pad that proved an ill fit for any game played in two dimensions--is finally getting addressed. Today, Xbox Live director of programming Major Nelson revealed that a new, redesigned wireless controller--bundled complete with Play-and-Charge kit--will arrive on stores shelves on November 9 in the US

What makes this controller noteworthy, other than removing the various colors associated with the controller's face buttons (the rationale being that gray is "stylish"), is what Nelson refers to as the patented "transforming D-pad." By twisting the D-pad itself on the controller, you'll be able to shift that pad between two different design modes: the current, concave "disc" directional pad and a more traditional "plus" shaped pad, raised outside of the "well" on the controller.

And that new raised D-pad looks a little something like this!

How high can you get, D-pad?
How high can you get, D-pad?

Look at how much higher that D-pad! It barely touches the well at all! Finally, I'll be able to pull off Zangief's supers and ultras without have to rely on crazy felines.

If you're looking to get your hands on this new controller, however, you're won't be able to grab it on its ownsome; Microsoft is currently only selling the new controller in a bundle set that includes the 360 Play-and-Charge Kit. However, Microsoft isn't charging any premium for their redesigned controller; like other controller-plus-charging cable bundles, the redesigned 360 controller with Play-and-Charge Kit will retail for $64.99.  And while the new controller design is set to come to the U.S. first, Nelson assures that the new pad will make its way to Europe sometime closer to February.

In fact, you can watch Nelson show off the new controller and its new D-pad in detail in video form.

I feel like it's not a huge leap to say that the environment in which this control pad will really be tested is in fast-paced Super Street Fighter IV play. So, I turn to you fighting game fans out there; you haven't had the chance to try it out yet, but, do you think that, given the the new design, this raised D-pad looks to be a more suitable way to play Street Fighter than the old "disc?"

@MrKlorox: If you hold the home button on the controller, there's a menu option right there to turn it off.

Thank you for the diagram, but I did have a sense for how the input was rendered. It was, however, a very well put-together informative piece, including hex, no less.

My mistake comes from a misinterpretation of an old article detailing the controller revisions way back and my experience with XNA libraries. I misread what they meant by "eight-way input feels better than the old four-way". I hadn't attributed it to the design of the disc, so thank you for clearing that up. The diagram was most useful in solidifying your point.

Still confused why MS would redesign their console and only make it available in black with not even a faceplate option but then release a new controller that's only available in silver.

Did they get the new color scheme mixed up at the factory?

"Fuck, I thought the memo said silver with black trim not black with silver trim! That's why it's called the 360S right?"

"You know what we have to do now don't you?

"Release a black version?"

"We'll have to make everything on the controller silver so that it appears it was intentional and we were going for a super-cool all silver on silver design."

Sadly that's not an option when using Remote Play, which I do very often to watch videos on my PSP.

@Goldanas: Glad I could clarify without coming off as patronizing. :)

They should have just changed the d-pad to the plus shape and lowered the cost, instead of making it change back and forth.  I'm waiting to see if the community complains that it slips out of "plus mode" accidentally.

I played with a fightpad that I got for $30, and it works great.

I'm more interested in the fact that they took away the colors on the face buttons.  Memory tells me that a lot of games use those color cues to help tell ya what button.  Shades of gray aren't gonna work out so hot for me.  Then again, Jeff and Vinny already do that, so...

Love the d-pad, in theory at least.

But the removal of the colors seems like another one of those "it'll look cooler but it'll make the product harder to use" decisions by MS.

Even though I consider myself a veteran gamer, I still sometimes associate button presses with color rather then letter.

It seems like an especially bad decision now that they are pushing more then ever into the casual market with kinect. Ah well...time will tell I suppose.

I am glad that they are finally addressing this problem, but as a fan of fighting games I have already purchased two MadCatz TE Fightsticks as arcade sticks are the way to go.  Still, a good d-pad is definitely workable, I just hope it is standard for their next console.

Pretty steep price, and I never had an issue with how the d-pad was shaped, I had a problem with it's complete lack of responsiveness. All that said I need another controller, might look into one of these once they appear cheaper and wired.

I'm not sure if I like the look of those thumb sticks. They look flatter (not as much dip in the middle) and don't have the little grippy nubs sticking up.

Yeah I agree. That is bizarre. The same goes for the new XBOX design. It looks like a very sophisticated, hardcore piece of kit. As does this controller. But then you have the Kinect and its launch line-up. It's almost like Microsoft's caught between two markets and it doesn't know where to focus.

I happen to like the removable battery. The biggest problem I have with the PS3 controller (aside from thumbstick placement) is the inability to pop out the battery to quickly and easily turn off the controller. Yes the bulge is annoying and could use a deeper seating, but the function is necessary for prolonged battery life.   However with my PS3, I have to leave it on and wait for it to time out to power off. This is unacceptable because you would have to buy a whole new controller once the internal battery refuses to charge. "

What are you talking about? Press and hold the PS button and go to "Turn off controller".. wow that was hard.

And no, you don't have to buy a whole new controller when the battery goes out completely.

Not only are these batteries cheaper than the 360 ones, last a hell of a lot longer, don't bulge out the bottom, they also aren't THAT hard to replace (helped by the fact that you just need a standard screw driver, not that security torx bullshit microsoft has the 360 controller.)

It's a good thing they fixed the D-Pad, but now they take away the colors from the buttons. The one thing that gets the newer people used the controller.

And what about the people that already have a play-and-charge kit? Yeah it's cool that I get another one, but I don't need another one.

As I said in a later post that doesn't work when using Remote Play. I guess I should have put that fact in my original comment.

And yes I know you can crack it open and replace the battery using third party equipment and items unofficially. I was talking about actual supported methods.

But I did not realize you could get more powerful batteries for longer lifetime. I'll look into that once mine dies.

Regarding remote play, fair enough, I too have experience that (but I do not use the function much myself)
As for the third party batteries, if you look around you can find Sony branded ones as well, they just cost more.
Personally I don't really care about first party supported methods, those usually involve just being more expensive than actually being better.  I just make sure to do my research to ensure I'm getting good stuff.

As for the 360 battery pack, I heavily dislike it because my hands are on the bigger side. I only use wired controllers because that bulge more or less destroys the ergonomics for me completely.

In fact I kind of just hate the 360 to be honest, the live price gouging and this new controller just makes it worse if you ask me.

I feel ya, dude. This is long overdue, and it's lame that they're forcing you to buy it with a Play and Charge Kit, which pretty much every 360 owner already has. I don't know if I'm bothered much by them removing the face colors, but maybe I would be if I was actually playing with it. My mind is pretty much trained to react to those colors.

I desperately need a new controller, so I would be buying it, except for the fact that I don't think they've fixed the other problems the controller has. I already have two controllers where the RB button has become very unresponsive, and the analog sticks no longer recenter themselves.

How many play-and-charge kits do they honestly think I need? I can't buy a battery pack without one, and now I can't buy a new controller without one either? Between this and the XBL stuff, I'm kind of getting sick of everything being bundled. Fortunately for me, I don't think their "amazing engineering" is that impressive. Unless the d-pad has 8 contacts, I don't think it'll make a huge difference.

This one's an easy "pass" for me.

I'm guessing the first mod project will be sticking the coloured buttons back in...

Regarding the play and charge kit, bundling this stuff is annoying but if the way Sony used to handle these things is any indication it's only a matter of time until they're sold individually and with new consoles. Remember how you used to have to buy the first Dualshock and the Dualshock 3 separately at first? I have an original Sixaxis that I've never used for this very reason.

Huh.  Might be good.  That twist option might be break-prone over time, though.  Wish they would have just raised it and kept it that way for durability over time.

I like the color scheme a lot more, though.  All in all, looking forward to the Razer Orza moreso.

So what's the point of the twist feature?  Why wouldn't you just leave it twisted into the "good" or "correct" position at all times?  Do they want to leave you the option of reminding yourself of what a bullcrap dpad you put up with for four years?

And you wonder why I hate microsoft? Jesus this is the biggest rip off ever. It is still on a disc, no
separate buttons. That means it will still play like shit for fighting games. And jesus if you are that retarded to still want something for a fighting game on the 360 then just fucking get this.

It's a dollar cheaper at that too AND YOU GET FUCKING TEKKEN 6 WHICH IS A 30 DOLLAR GAME. Jesus Christ.
