No Time For Rumors Dr. Jones

The new Indiana Jones game is rumored to be canceled...for a few hours. Fortune and glory, kid.

Many moons ago, LucasArts showed off the Euphoria engine using a new Indiana Jones game. While NaturalMotion's grabby, on-the-fly physics engine has gone on to star in games such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, poor Indy has yet to see the fluorescent lights of retail shelves. The demo I saw years ago was definitely intriguing, though I had mostly forgotten about the game until today, when I spotted some news that it was canceled. IGN reported the following:

IGN has heard from multiple sources (both internally at LucasArts and elsewhere) involved in the long-in-development Indiana Jones title for Xbox 360 and PS3 that the game has been cancelled. Unofficially we've heard that developers are being reallocated to other projects and that the new Indiana Jones project that we last reported on in April 2006 is dead in the water.

Indy! Cover your heart!
Indy! Cover your heart!
If you saw Crystal Skull, you might be thinking that it's not such a bad thing to let old Indy rest in peace. On the other hand, if you disregard everything but the original three movies as canon, then this might sadden you like it does me...well, disregard everything except The Fate of Atlantis. Furthermore, if you're one of those heartless bastards who does not like The Last Crusade, you're not invited to read the rest of this article. Go home.

Shortly after the report from IGN, Joystiq talked to someone at LucasArts who obviously didn't get the cancellation memo, and reported this piece of seemingly contrary information:

According to a LucasArts representative, "LucasArts remains absolutely committed to the Indiana Jones franchise. While we are aware that fans have been eagerly awaiting additional information on the upcoming game, they can rest assured that details are forthcoming."

So, is Indiana Jones (and the Staff of Kings) coming to a console near you, or will it vanish faster than Short Round's career? ZING! I kid. I kid. But seriously folks, what's the deal with Temple of Doom? Also, I'm curious to know how many of you were following this game. It seems to have fallen off the radar in the last few years, so I'm not too surprised to see rumors that it has been canceled.

Here's a brief look at what we could (potentially) be missing:

This could actually turn out to be a cool game, especially if Harrison Ford does the voice acting. Hopefully it's not canceled.

They should just take Uncharted and re-release it but with an Indiana Jones skin over Drake.

I hope this game doesn't get canceled, I have always loved the first three Indiana Jones movies. To be honest I've nearly completely forgot about this game, theres been alot of other games on my radar for this year (Halo wars, Killzone 2, Halo 3: ODST, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, and the Ghostbusters game just to name a few)

Hopefully the people at LucasArts who are actually working on this game, will get all the time they need to make a game worthy of the Indiana Jones name.

Dang. This is a pity. Crystal Skull was pretty terrible, proving that George Lucas is only capable of making half his movies any good. I guess LucasArts realized that star wars makes more money than Indy, no matter what format it is presented in.

I don't think we're missing a lot really. Indy was good at point and clicks, action games never worked very well for him (as weird as it may sound considering the character).
Oh yeah, and to that I can add something to the "what's the deal with The Temple of Doom", well, the deal is that it's the only Indy movie that has only action from beginning to end, there's not a single momento of archeological discovery or investigation, which is probably the cooler part of the other movies.
See? I just scientifically proved that an action only thingy does not work for Indy, be it in movies or games.

I was waiting for news of this cancellation. I looked a few months ago and was surprised to find none. The only thing that was giving this game hope was euphoria. And after seeing how poorly it was used in Force Unleashed, there was very much nothing at all to look forward to.

Indy hasn't had a decent outing since Fate of Atlantis.  Maybe i'm a little biased here because Fate of Atlantis happens to be one of my all time favourite adventure games.

Lucas Arts have been concentrating on Star Wars for way too long, it's time for them to get back to making original games instead of just milking old franchises.

Yikes. Is it that hard to develop a good Indiana Jones game these days? Also: Crystal Skull is better than Temple of Doom.

I was really hoping this would come out eventually, I have many fond memories of playing Fate of Atlantis and have been dying for a new Indiana Jones game that's actually good.

And whoever thinks Crystal Skull is better than Temple of Doom (or any of the other original movies) is ridiculous.

*sigh* Oh boy... More Crystal Skull bashing. I get it, really, I do... I mean, of course aliens are less believable than a magic God box that shoots ghosts at Nazis, or magic rocks that make water flow from thin air, or a magic cup that heals any wound.

I remember this game years back, and i've been looking forward to it until i put 2 and 2 together, and realised it probably won't come out, now that there is a new "Indiana Jones" movie out...that is un-related to the game in every single way...and plus, y'know, force unleashed.

Many moons ago.

I too had forgotten about this game's existence until recently when I was looking through an old issue of EGM for some reason. I saw Indiana Jones in there and I thought "That game never came out, did it? Must have been cancelled."
Well, I guess it is cancelled now (maybe).

I heard about this a long time ago from a copy of EGM (RIP) and was super-stoked. I love the tongue-in-cheek humor of the Indy movies, so it'll be sad if the game really has gone the way of the Crystal Skull. That is to say...

Into another dimension!

I enjoyed The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The ending was a little Oo? wha? but the movie as a whole was good, Besides, everyone points the finger at Lucas for that, but no one mentions Spielburg on the fact that man gets a hard on for anything aliens, Im pretty sure he was sweating with delight on the ending of that movie.

Aside from that, a new Indy game would be sweet, as long as they did it right, it would be "the bee's knees" haha oh man that phrase makes no sense and yet I always find it comical.
