Sledgehammer Games Working On Call of Duty "Action-Adventure"

Also, Treyarch's officially up this year.

Glen A. Schofield - The new face of Call of Duty?
Glen A. Schofield - The new face of Call of Duty?
"Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer with Infinity Ward." That's the official statement from Activision about yesterday's dismissal. That line is buried in a press release focusing on the future of the Call of Duty series along with these other things:

What?

One Vincent Caravella, when presented with this information, immediately said "so, they're making God of Warfare?" But you can hear that for yourself on tonight's podcast.

Additionally, Activision is forming a new business unit around the Call of Duty franchise to combine resources and bring to COD "the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit." But so far, all of this is starting to sound more like Guitar Hero circa 2009 than anything Blizzard's been doing lately.

Editor's note: The original version of this article misinterpreted the releasse to mean that Sledgehammer's COD game would be released in 2011. No release date for this product has been announced. Giant Bomb regrets the error.

Is anybody actually surprised? I thought this would happen after MW3, but I totally expected this raping of the name. But hey, lowest-common-denominators will stick with it until they all jump on the next bandwagon.

I think I'll wait till we get some, you know, actual details on the game before I go making any judgements about it's quality.

I don't think Bobby Kotick acutally realizes what he has done, as if the 2 heads, decide to go and make a new studio, i will wager a large sum of money on that a large majority (if not all) staff of Infinity Ward leave and move to the new studio. But the regretable thing is that a call of duty game could not be developed by the new studio, therefore the standard of call of duty has just gone down the drain, and i for one, will not purchase a call of duty game because of it, (i will still purchase one from treyarch, because from their past call of duties have not been bad, just not of the same quality.)

Activision has been sucking at the teet of the CoD franchise since CoD3 - this news isn't surprising.

To be honest I am expecting something of a sandbox game along the lines Mercenaries 2 only less janky and with more souless corporate stank. Though a God of War clone set in the Call of Duty universe sounds intriguing as hell. I am imagining Keith David with some sort of over sized battle axe and twin Desert Eagles taking down various deities of Norse Mythology that were resurrected and tainted by some sort of evil time traveling Nazi scientist who is just a head in a jar attached to some sort of mech.

From what I'm hearing, their will be 3 versions. Treyarchs, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer. Apparently IW is still in the mix.

Thanks for Guitar Hero-ing another franchise Activision.

You got my money for MW2, but after this stunt. . .You can take Call of Space of whatever you're going to call it and shove it where the sun don't shine.

You won't get another dime from me.

"I have absolutely no reliable source on this, but I read this on another forum:

My understanding from inside sources are that the two execs at IW were on a tele-conference with the Activision execs and were being confronted about their discussions with a rival publisher. Apparently companies talk to each other. Who da thunk? At any rate in the middle of the conference one of the IW guys, Jason West, started muttering something under his breath. It was barely audible at first but he started to get louder and louder until it became clear he was saying:

“Suck my dick, Michael”.

He just kept repeating it and getting louder and louder until finally he was screaming at the top of his lungs. It was made doubly loud because the other IW exec had joined in so it was a duet of:

“Suck my dick, Michael”

directed at the Activision guys. After 5 stunned minutes the Activision execs started yelling back at them that if they didn’t shut up they’d be fired. This only led to the IW guys each giving the double bird (4X birds) and continuing their lusty screaming. Eventually Activision ended the call and called the security team. Apparently even after the call ended, up until the point security arrived, the two IW execs were still screaming:

“Suck my dick, Michael.”

The really odd thing? No one on the call was named Michael."

Activision are totally Guitar Heroing COD now. And at a time when COD is very strong at sales but arguably at it's weakest point qualitatively. I see this franchise dive like a brick of shit because I know alot of people who bought MW2 and was loving the series won't buy the next because of the rampant buggy online ruining it, including me.

Sitting here in Denmark contemplating this whole mess, my thoughts always seem to end up at: "Gosh... Weed must be cheap-as-shit in USA"
I'm truly dazzled by all of this, but I'm trying to think about the positive things that could come out of all this.

That actually makes more sense and is less overblown than the plot of Modern Warfare 2.

When I read this statement of "Action-Adventure" I read, "We are making a game that is exactly like the Nathan Drake sequel". This wouldn't be too bad if they do it right. If it's God of Warfare, I will take a pass. We all know how well Dante's Inferno turned out when trying to rip off that franchise.

What about Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing?

Anyway, I'm glad to see Activision has learned their lesson about overexposure and over release from the Guitar Hero franchise and isn't going to bleed another another marquee franchise until it's bone dry over the next 2 years and then fire everyone involved....

If you didn't want the game and decided not to pick it up then thats $60 plus tax saved.   Cool.

If you didn't buy it because you thought the dev studio would have a falling out AFTER the game was completed then you are a future-seeing magic man beast.  Or a dirty liar.

What? Call of Duty, duh. How is that even a question. I think Zelda should end when Nintendo can't make it good anymore. And they just keep making them better.

However, as for Call of Duty, these news don't sound good at all. Infinity Ward nor Treyarch sound like they would be experienced at making a game as complex as an action adventure game, and if they did, it might suck. Meaning it would have to be outsourced....

I've only ever purchased MW1 and 2. But chances are I probably won't care too much about the next one. Game developers need more new ideas and less milk.

Pretty sure there have been some staff change ups at Nintendo since Zelda on the NES. The last Call of Duty game did surprisingly well; I don't think there is any reason to say that Call of Duty should end right now. As a matter of fact, I would say that Zelda is closer to being done to death than Call of Duty after all these sequels.

I do agree with you that Action Adventure is the wrong direction for this game to go, however, as it seems like the complete opposite of what Call of Duty games are supposed to be about. But remember: even the mighty Zelda had a brief appearance on the CD-i. That said, I think Call of Duty has a good chance of recovering if this game does indeed flop.

If done right, a Call of Duty action adventure game could be the best thing ever, and keep the series from getting stale and "rehashy". The thing about Zelda is that not only are they remarkably different from each other, we only get one or two for each system, with many years apart. Meanwhile, all the Call of Duty games since the original PC game, although gotten significantly better, have really not been that different from each other.

You know what, I change my opinion. This new direction could be great. You never know.

I wouldn't say remarkably different, but I totally agree with you: Nintendo knows how to release games, whilst Activision does not. This is why I yearn for more Kirby games, and never want to see another Guitar Hero game. Ever.

I have little doubt that Activision will eventually saturate the market with Call of Duty games until the series stops being profitable. I see a future with lots of spin-off potential and weird money making avenues, most of which Activision will take, but that doesn't mean that the produce that grows out of this manure heap can't be all the sweeter for it. These games will have big budgets, and lots of mainstream exposure. This game for instance, could be awesome.

And I can't really fault you for it, but you seem to be forgetting how many people bought Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 with no prior knowledge of the series. Those games put up huge numbers, the likes of which Call of Duty had never seen before. To a lot of people, mostly more casual or younger users, this series came out of nowhere. That said, the games are about as shallow (gameplay-wise) as your average puddle, but I guess that's why their making this game: to expand the Call of Duty marque.

...or associate themselves with Call of Duty in order to sell more copies. Either way, I don't really care. No matter how carefully Call of Duty is handled, something else will dethrone it eventually.

What can I say? Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst.

" It's starting to sound like activision is attempting to usurp control over the CoD franchise even though it's technically still at least some what owned by IW.  IW works under contracts for Activision, and when that contract ends, I suspect long legal battles to ensue over who gets to control the CoD franchise.  The IW bosses may have objected to these plans Activision made concerning the future of their involvement in CoD.  Perhaps IW was attempting to NOT renew their contract in October. "
This is so not correct it is incorrect.  Activision owns Infinity Ward and Call of Duty with it.  There is no contract between Infinity Ward and Activision because Activision owns everything.  Activision can do whatever they want with either the franchise or the company and that is why they kicked Jason and Vince's asses to the curb. "
Utterly incorrect.  Owning a company, development team or infact any business of any sort does not excuse the parent company of dishonouring their agreed payment structures, contract bonuses and/or legislated and/or uniionised rates of pay.  The two heads of IW have made it clear that Activision are trying not to honour the agreed income which both parties signed off on.  You can own a dog, but should you starve it or mistreat it any number of ways to ill effect, that's against the law.  Ownership does not preclude legal obligation.

@SeriouslyNow: My friend, you are completely misunderstanding me.  You're completely right about that, and only a fool would argue otherwise.  What I'm arguing against is the idea that "Infinity Ward is under contract with Activision" that a lot of people on the internet have been suggesting.  They're not.  They aren't like iD who just had a sweet deal with Activision.  Activision owns them outright, and thinking that Activision would allow them to pull a Bungie is just silly.
