Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Remake Surfaces

New Xbox Live Arcade title surfaces at "Gotham Galabunga."

Here's a lady! And the title screen!
Here's a lady! And the title screen!
You know, I liked the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I was growing up. But not enough to feel that there needed to be, like, conventions or other events devoted to reminiscing about the power of... Turtle Power. But hey, I was a few years older than the target audience for TMNT when it totally blew up, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Anyway, at just such an event--known as the Gotham Galabunga, but it sounds like it was part of the Tribeca Film Festival--a new TMNT game surfaced. It's an Xbox Live Arcade remake of the second arcade game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. I spotted a link to the "Ninja Pizza" blog over on Destructoid, and they've got some details on what, exactly, this is going to be, based on what representatives at the event were saying.

Two levels from the game were on display, and it was said to match up pretty well with the original game, though Bebop and Rocksteady--who appeared as bosses in one section--have been replaced by "Tokka" and "Rahzar." I don't even know what a Tokka or a Rahzar are, but they obviously can't be better than Bebop and Rocksteady.

Why would they get rid of Bebop and Rocksteady?

TMNT was cool when I was a little kid... and I still think they are cool now... I just don't play with them anymore.

Is the girl in the picture supposed to be April?

Apparently Tokka and Rahzar were the bosses for that level in the arcade version, while Bebop and Rocksteady were on the SNES.

Jeff, just a note, Tokka and Rahzar were the bosses in the original arcade version that noone played.  The SNES version had extra levels so they moved those 2 to a different level.

edit - sucks because the SNES version was the best too...

This sounds like the SNES version. Tokka and Rahzar were bosses in the technodrome level, while Bebop and Rocksteady where bosses in the pirate ship level for the SNES version.  Well it seems that this game isn't a direct port from the arcade version because I don't recall Tokka and Rahzar even in being in that version. But hey I may be mistaken, it has been a long time since I played either version.

TMNT had two boss sequences one with Beebop/Rockteady the other with Toka/Razor (at least that's how I remember it)

All depends on what level Jeff got to play.  If he played Technodrome and saw Tokka and Rahzar, SNES version, if he was playing Pirate Ship, Arcade.  If he played both levels, then they changed something.

I guess the success of the other TMNT arcade game on XBLA prompted this.

Turtles in Time is one of the greatest Beat Em' Ups ever. I can't believe they're actually remaking it that's just so unexpected. I can't wait though the screens for it are awesome.

Platforms? I know they just showed it for the 360, but what about others? Did you ask them? Did they announce it? Other websites seem to suggest both PS3 and WIi versions, others just 360, which of all was actually there to get the info first hand?

Sounds like a remake of the arcade version...which I guess is cool, but it'd be WAY cooler if it was the SNES version, but with 4-players.

Supposedly that PSN and Wiiware talk was mistaken, just XBLA for now.

This is the best news in quite a while. And to those who don't know: The reason why the characters were taken out was because this is a remake of the arcade version, which is slightly different from the SNES version. I assume they chose to remake the arcade version because it was 4 player, whereas the SNES was only 2 player.

When they're making a whole new remake like this, there'd be no problem in having the SNES extra levels in addition to 4 player mode.  If it was emulation only, I'd agree with you.

Yeah, I just saw one of the screenshots from the game where I found out it's 2.5D. I didn't know they were going to remake it that much. I thought it would be like the first TMNT game on XBLA where it's basically just a pretty port. This is kinda interesting though. So yes, there's no reason why they couldn't just keep the same stuff as the beloved SNES version, unless they for some reason wanted to stay more true to the arcade version? Bah, who knows.

Unless it's an HD remake I will have no part in it.

I still play my SNES version of Turtles and Time and it suits me just fine.

I have very fond memories of the SNES version of this game, which is different from both the arcade version.  Now how long until we have a facelift for the Manhattan Project?

Color me feeling a little bit skeptical about this. Bringing a 2D game in to the 3D world can raise all sorts of new problems, potentially. Essentially, they're making a brand-new new game and trying to recreate a reasonable facsimile of Turtles in Time assets. That leaves all sorts of room for messing up how the game plays, and could potentially change the look and feel of the entire game.

That makes me a little cautious. I'd be more excited if this was a "Turtles in Time HD Remix" with high-res sprites, instead.

*ahem*  Tokka and Rahzar were two mutations of a snapping turtle and wolf that were created by Shredder in the TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze movie.  = D

While they were cool for that movie...they were NOT cooler than Bebop and Rocksteady.  This makes me very sad, as those two have gotten such a bad reputation over the years for stupid reasons.

It looks alright to me. I bet it looks much better in motion, that's most probably why they made the transition, to animate the characters better, bring them to life a little.

Oh, the memories of going to the park and watching the grown men perform in turtle costumes, my father roaring manly noises over the waste of time, my mother smiling on awkwardly looking in the wrong direction, and my brother and I on the fringe of orgasming over how awesome the event was. Squeal.

The only weird part of the 2.5D retranslation I can see is seeing some of those enemies in 3D models. Even those foot soldiers, its kind of a trip to see them all...rounded and not cartooned out.

As much as I am psyched for this, I do hope they include the original 2D version in this game as an unlockable or something. I have a real affinity for those original sprite animations.
