That Latest Fallout: New Vegas Patch for Xbox 360? Yeah, Don't Install It

Reports of saves translating into frequent game crashes have Bethesda regrouping.

Hold onto your butts, Vault Dwellers.

Even though Xbox Live is demanding you update your copy of Fallout: New Vegas with the latest patch, publisher Bethesda Softworks is separately demanding you decline the update.

What? Exactly.

Players have reported repeated crashes on Xbox 360 upon loading game saves, after the update. Bethesda looked into it and found plenty of validity to the claims...

"Regarding the Xbox 360 update, we’ve discovered a solution to the issue that’s causing problems with game saves," said the company on its blog. "We’ll be hosting a replacement update on Xbox LIVE as soon as humanly possible. If you haven’t grabbed the New Vegas update on 360 today, we recommend you decline the update until the new one is live. We’ll be sure to let you know when it’s up."

That's right: a patch for a patch! Such is the age of games we live in, apparently, though one has to wonder how a botched patch survived both development and certification without anyone catching this bad boy.

I love me some Fallout, but this? This isn't right.

The PC version is worlds better than at launch, but I still have a hard time convincing myself to play it anymore. I *really* want to like it as much as I liked Fallout 3, but... meh. It just feels off somehow. If I had the 360 version and lost my save because of this, I'd swear off the game for good.

Bethesda/Obsidian could probably find a way to red ring a ps3.

@MattyFTM: It's almost impressive to think about the amount of cross-checking incompetence that would have to go on for a patch like this to go through unchanged. And you'd think they'd read the code especially carefully with Obsidian after the near-broken launch of New Vegas in the first place; do they just want to be unable to sell Obsidian's games anymore?

Actually, game updates works fine even now. It's independent of the status of the PSN.

@Little_Socrates: All other things being equal, it would be worse on PC since Steam auto-updates. At least on the 360 you have to confirm each update.

Yes, I know you can turn off auto-update but honestly, who does it? If I'm worried about Steam eating bandwidth while I'm playing a non-Steam game online I just close Steam or launch it through Steam.

Such irresponsible garbage. I guess that ridiculous two-week patch certification process is meaningless too.

Too bad as I did this & seeing the same amount of lockups as before now with messages of DLC not being available. Would have liked it if they did the DLC support/variety for this like Fallout3, seems at times that they moved on past doing more for this game.

Bethesda: This is why people don't like you. It's because of stuff like this.

You'd think the ability to patch games post launch would help improve games not make them more buggy.

The patch work just fine, it's just that you can't load your current save file because of DLC error, and if you continue to load it will freeze the game. I had no problem starting a new game because, truly, this patch is a god send because of the performance optimizations.

The game will load up fine.  The problem is with loading your saved games.  As soon as you do an error message about not having some of the DLC required for that game pops up (which is hilarious because I never bought the DLC).  If you ignore the error and continue loading the game will freeze on the loading screen.

My impression is that you can start a new game, but I don't really feel like replaying those 20-30 hours I put in already.

Come on. This was on the forums for some time. It seems a bit off when you see news on the forums before you see it from journalists.

Doesn't Microsoft have lengthy approval procedures for patches? I mean, plenty of developers complain about the length of time MS takes to approve updates to games. I specifically remember the Super Meat Boy update not arriving on consoles for many weeks after Team Meat said they had submitted it to MS, and every time they were asked, they said it was on MS, not them. So how did this slip though? Surely if MS are doing such lengthy tests, shit like this shouldn't happen.

@Olivaw: Actually, I heard they traced the problems related with the patch to a file by Microsoft, so it isn't necessarily their fault.

Someone needs to take New Vegas out back and put a bullet in it. Old girl had a good run, but she's old. Needs to be taken care of.

Damn I installed it but things are working fine. It did tell me that the Dead Money DLC no longer existed.... I suppose that's my punishment for buying it in the first place.
