That New Smash Bros. Game Iwata Mentioned? That Doesn't Really Exist Yet...

Masahiro Sakurai uses his Famitsu column to manage expectations regarding the next Smash Bros.

Remember when Satoru Iwata was talking all excitedly about Nintendo's exciting franchises and how excited he was about how they were all coming to the Wii U and 3DS and stuff? Right, so he may have been a little too excited, it seems, as he actually announced at least one game that doesn't even exist yet.

Masahiro Sakurai wearing the best shirt you'll ever see.
Masahiro Sakurai wearing the best shirt you'll ever see.

That game would be the next in the Super Smash Bros. series, which Iwata proudly proclaimed would be coming to both the Wii U and 3DS. Series creator Masahiro Sakurai doesn't dispute that notion, but he would like you to know that he hasn't even started thinking about that game yet.

It's worth noting that Iwata has done this in the past--and it was with Smash Bros., too!

Sakurai apparently opted to use his regular column in Weekly Famitsu (translated by 1UP) to dispel the notion that a new Smash Bros. game was far enough along in development to even be considered a thing yet. Sakurai's studio, Project Sora, is solely focused on Kid Icarus: Uprising at this point in time, and hasn't even begun work on Smash Bros. yet.

"We've got no plans whatsoever -- we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

Several years is probably not the phrase you wanted to hear when asking how far off the next Smash Bros. game was, but it's not like Nintendo releases a gaggle of these things every year, anyway. On the plus side, Sakurai had plenty to say on the decision to make the (eventual) game for both the Wii U and 3DS, instead of just one or the other.

== TEASER ==
"If we went solely for the Wii U," he said, "the HD graphics would really bump up the visual effects, but then we'd be stuck in another arms race. If we made this game another extension over previous one, we'd have to cut out the new things we could possibly do on the 3DS hardware and compete with ourselves again over the size of the character roster and the amount of gameplay we can put it. It wouldn't be a fruitful competition, but doing something completely new would be difficult for many reasons, not least of which that the gamers may not be satisfied with it. That's why we decided to think about ways to link the personal connection one has with his portable system to the gather-around-and-play aspect of console systems."

So, at the very least, Sakurai has clearly been putting some thought into this next Smash Bros. project. Still, the man sounds a tad harried and a little uncomfortable with the strains now placed upon his head and the heads of his team.

"The hardest part about game development is the burdens it places upon me," he said. "With previous projects I had a game design document in place before forming a team, but with this I don't have the time for that. I won't be able to look at every aspect of the game and balance out all the characters by myself this time. I'm trying to think about how this is going to work out, but probably I'll have to discuss it with my future development team. The future of this project really depends on the people I can get involved with it."

Here's hoping he can find himself a future development team capable of taking some of the load off his shoulders. And, also, possibly squeeze in a vacation sometime.

As you pointed out, Alex, it sounds like much the same situation that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was born from as well. I remember Sakurai reacting much the same way, I think he needs to relax a little. But maybe stressing out over this sort of thing is why his games tend to be pretty good quality products.

I thought this was made pretty obvious during Nintendo's Press Conference/the rest of the show itself. Iwata was pretty vague about the game, and when your announcement amounts to a franchise logo (not even a logo or title for the game itself) and practically saying "And these games will interact with each other maybe? Somehow? That would be cool, right?" I think the best assumption to make is that the game is barely a game that exists at this point. Sakurai's audience didn't mind waiting for Brawl (although the hardcore wave-dashers out there found it a disappointment), I don't think they'll mind waiting for this new Smash Bros game either. Nintendo fans are pretty well used to having to wait for most of their games anyway.

From what I've read Sakurai kind of strikes me as "harried" and "uncomfortable" most of the time, so this situation seems like pretty standard fare for him and his relationship with Nintendo. I wouldn't put much stock into the use of the words "several years" either.

Oh yeah, announcing your non-existent killer app at the same time as your new console was just to attract team members. Couldn't find anyone who wanted to work at or with Nintendo? Ugh....

Yeah Sakurai mentioned this at one of the Nintendo developer roundtables at E3. Development on the games hasn't and won't begin until the release of Kid Icarus on the DS.

I thought they had said Smash Bros didn't exist yet, but that they would eventually put it on the WiiU when they announced it, I didn't get the feeling it had already started based on what Iwata said, he seemed to be promising that it would come someday.

Exactly. Cool to hear what Sakurai is thinking about releasing it on both systems, though.

I feel like Nintendo is the new  Fable. All these lies and misleading nonsense, very unprofessional. Clearly Wii U wasn't ready to be shown to the world just like 3ds wasn't ready to be released when it was.

Why is this news? You know they would make one for the Wii U even without that announcement.

I thought in the conference he already said it was a ways off. I am really looking forward to a new Smash Bros. game as I have already put a huge amount of time into Brawl.

I may be the only person sick of Nintendo rehashes. Am I really the only one who just...doesn't care for new SSB, Mario, or MKart? I'll get pumped for a non-milked franchise like Luigi's Mansion, sure, just not the ones milked dry.

He did the same thing for Brawl as well.

When he announced it was coming to the Revolution back at E3 2005, he was actually begging on stage for Sakurai to make him another one.

@Godzilla_Sushi

: If you haven't noticed, third parties don't seem to like making games on Nintendo consoles, so they have to do the dance to attract them as much as they can without actually having to buy them or pay for exclusives.

@roylink: Not really. Nintendo would prefer to skip a franchise rather than have someone other than the one they want to make it. Metroid skipped the N64 generation, the Excite series and Sin and Punishment series skipped the Gamecube generation, and Punch-Out skipped both the N64 and the Gamecube.

@MadExponent: Kind of hard to be tired of a franchise when they only come about once a console generation.

This isn't a surprise. I believe they said as much at e3; IGN definitely pointed it out that they're just gonna start production on the games now, AFTER the announcement.

Granted, this isn't new. They did the same thing to Sakurai for Brawl. They like to sucker-punch the guy, apparently. Granted, I'm sure Sora definitely wouldn't mind doing another Super Smash. I mean, who knows how well Kid Icarus will sell? But a Smash Bros? That's a guaranteed million seller. Even though Game Arts could do it. TMNT Smash Up was such a competent ripoff, it felt like a mod.

Seriously, he should contract Game Arts to help out here. They could AT LEAST handle the 3DS version all by themselves.

I thought that Smash Bros. announcement felt a little rushed and spur of the moment. Lucky for me my interest in that series ended after Melee but pity those millions that love it and now have to wait.

Melee is still the best and all the time between that and Brawl?  Ehhh i'm not convinced they will even put out a game as good as Melee, let alone how long it takes.

That's not really surprising. How long after the release of the Wii did Brawl come out? (everywhere, of course)

I'm gonna guess it'll take at least that long.

All the games you mentioned come out maybe once a generation. That is as close to not being milked as a franchise can possibly be.

Totally agree. The most off-putting thing about Nintendo for me is the reliance on established franchises. Every generation just feels the same: "Okay, when's the Zelda game coming out? The Mario? The Mario Kart? The Mario Party? The Mario sports titles? The Smash Bros.? The Kirby? The Metroid? Etc."

It's super indicative that they just ran out of names for Mario platformers and called the last two "New Super Mario Bros." and "New Super Mario Bros. Wii."

Give Mario and crew a break and make some new franchises.

Ok, so in 2014 we can expect to see Super Smash Bros Scuffle? That seems... unfortunate.

Super Smash Bros is no longer a franchise I'm super excited for. One could say that about the majority of Nintendo's franchises at this point, but Smash Bros especially. I blame this entirely on my exposure to real fighting games.

I'm leaning towards Super Smash Bros.: Fisticuffs, but I like the sound of SSBS.

It's not the number of games in a franchise that necessarily determines whether it's "milked" or not. It's been around for almost two decades, 9 games is not a large amount given the time. They have also all been high quality, with a lot of thought and care having gone into each seperate release. If they had just cashed in on the name rather than make good games, then that would have been a milked franchise. CoD is a milked franchise at this point. Guitar Hero was a milked franchise. Tony Hawk became a milked franchise. There are no Nintendo franchises that are anything like the three examples I provided.

There's only been one console Mario Kart each generation.

Yeah well no shit. We already knew that since that's what he said at the press conference. All Iwata said is that he was talking to the other guy and wondering if a new SSB game could be developed and that they'd like it on both WiiU and 3DS. Nothing else.

But yeah I guess this article is for the stupid people who keep misinterpreting just about everything.

...and there will be a new Mario Bros game and a new Zelda and a new Metroid and a new Kirby... If it was any other company talking about a game for the system I could excuse the error, but when it's the company that also makes the hardware and is listing games for that hardware, they should know what they are actually working on.

Nintendo actually holds more IPs than most out there, and they often co-develop games. But dude, it is Mario.

Making IPs can't be easy nowadays either, the "hardcorez" is starting to become a bunch of demanding people.

Wow. Nintendo seems to be like any other modern company: horrible internal communication and promised results without consent of the operators that would produce said results.

It's like being home again *sniffle*
