The Elder Scrolls Online Will Finally Bring The Elder Scrolls Online

New MMO in the works at Zenimax Online Studios will bring the full world of Tamriel to online players.

The rather stylishly spartan cover spread.
The rather stylishly spartan cover spread.

It's been rumored for a while, and Game Informer has finally confirmed it via their new cover: The next chapter in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise will be a MMORPG.

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently in development at Zenimax Online Studios, and is designed to let players explore the full breadth of the world of Tamriel, "from Elsweyr to Skyrim and everywhere in between."

The Game Informer cover story will cover single-player quests, public dungeons, and even a player-driven PvP element that features three warring factions all vying for the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne. Additionally, a short teaser trailer is expected to launch tomorrow.

The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled for a 2013 release on both PC and Mac platforms.

Yeah, the world will be huge. And there will be loads of assholes there to ruin it for everyone else, the downfall of every single online multiplayer game where you can't just play with your friends exclusively ever.

No, I can't be excited because it's going to be a MMO, it's going to not be a TES game. If I wanted to play World of Warcraft I'd probably have done so by now, setting it in a universe I like won't change that, see my total lack of interest in The Old Republic. Now if it was an actual evolution in the whole MMO stick & changed the formula I might be interested, but who is going to take that risk?

If they use the same engine as in Skyrim, it will be buggy as hell. Although I kinda hope for a console port...

I don't even care if it's a WoW clone, I just want to see Elsweyr and Valenwood.

I am actually very excited to see what this looks like. I love the Elder Scrolls and their gameplay style but a more expansive game set in the same universe with other players could turn out to be very cool.

I see a lot of people saying no one wants this but I highly doubt this is the case. MMOs are very popular and the Elder Scrolls is a hot property at the moment. I'm not saying it's going to take down WOW but I can see it carving its own niche much like Guild Wars and The Old Republic did. I even suspect a large number of the naysayers on this site will come around if the game actually looks good.

Can't help feeling underwhelmed here... the last thing I want in a Elder Scrolls experience is tons of other dudes running around jumping up mountains while I'm exploring. It's the whole thing about those games, you are running about solo, at your own pace doing exactly what you want when you want.

Only form of multiplayer I could get behind would be a co-op and maybe a pvp surprise drop in like Demon Souls, that would spice up an Elder Scrolls game by a fair margin but still keep it where i think it has its greatest strenghts. Will keep my fingers crossed that someone makes a serious effort to make a good elderscrolls game that is also an MMO in some way, but I'm not expecting that to happen.

Whatever happens, I wish the devs the best of luck!

There are different types of MMO's such as EVE, which is much more of a sandbox/simulation that hopefully this willy copy.

And then there's Guild Wars 2, which is similar to the WoW but makes some pretty drastic changes.. Particularly to the gameplay and overall structure not being completely bad/dated.

Hmm... I don't know. Bethesda has become legendary for their terrible game engines and for releasing buggy games, imagine that in an MMO. Not only that, I always felt like there wasn't much gear in TES games, that's not something that would be acceptable in an MMO. How do they plan on using their mediocre (to say the least) combat in an MMO setting? Lots of things remain to be seen, but like most people here, I'm expecting a trainwreck or a mildly entertaining "other MMO" to add to the list of MMOs in the world. I don't understand the difficulty in making an original game that just so happens to have lots of people playing it. Why do they all revolve around raids and fetch quests?

As much as I love The Elder Scrolls, I'm not too optimistic about this one. I really hope they try something different instead of creating the all too familiar WoW-esque MMORPG. Unfortunately, different rarely sells well.

Please be a sandbox, please be a sandbox.

I think it's safe to say that, if you see a group of 2 or more Khajiit's or Argonians, you should just walk backwards slowly in the direction you came from and for god's sake, hope that they are speaking in a private channel.

If it has a monthly subscription charge, which it will, I could not give any less of a fuck. I already played Arena so the novelty of knowing how big the world is isn't there for me. The only thing it has is the Elder Scrolls name in it and I refuse to pay a monthly fee for that.

I think 2013 is a bit too early for another Elder Scrolls game. I think everyone who has put like several hundred hours into Skyrim will just get the Skyrim DLC.

Hmm, I don't mind the idea, as long as it's executed properly. Though I'd rather have heard news about FO 4. I don't mind Multiplayer in my TES games, but I'd rather have seen it in the form of Co-op.

I say good luck but I don't really play mmo's anymore and used to a lot. All of my friends that used to play quit as well. I don't want an Elder Scrolls MMO but I would like a co-op Elder Scrolls game.

An mmo basically means that they wont be making single player Skyrim games anymore.

I hope that the mmo will be everything that we expect from a Skyrim game but I have a sinking feeling that it will be something like Swtor. A decent mmo but no substitute for a great single player experience.

An MMO would only work for these games if they kept servers really small. Like - 100 people per world. So it'd be a real event when you ran into someone else. And possibly with open PvP, as well. That would fit my image of the Elder Scrolls. Add too many people, and then the world can't be dynamic enough and that feeling of exploration is lost because you're only going over well-trodden territory.

Negative gut reaction, but I can see this potentially having creative combat mechanics for an MMO. Count me as curious.

I will admit I'm not necessarily interested in this, but as long as the crazy single player rpg itch gets scratched one was or another, I'll be pleased.

Given I'd rather have the announcement been about Fallout 4.... but... ya know.

I'm going to hold off to see how they implement it. I'd be interested if it's more like a giant version of an Elder Scrolls game with lots of people rather than a standard MMO. I doubt that will be the case, though. I'm expecting a game that's going to be another WoW.

But do you really want to see them in sub-par visuals in a world that's incredibly rigid with 20 other players queuing for a spawn whilst jumping up and down constantly? Because unless it is revolutionary, that's what it'll be

My futile email to Bethesda:

Dear Bethesda,

As a longtime fan of the ES series (I've played every game: Arena on release, played through Daggerfall 5 times, bought Battle Spire and Redguard but ran into technical problems with each, played Morrowind a dozen times and load it up every year, and Oblivion and Skyrim), I would just like to say I could care less about your new Elder Scrolls MMO. I think the ES games have degraded since Morrowind, with the environments getting more homogenized and the combat system unchanged since the 1990s. Please don't devote resources to an area that is so hard to develop successful games for, and drag TES series down while yr at it. Thank you for your time.

If it were the next TES game with co op ala Dead Island, this announcement would be FANTASTIC news. I'm really worried that this is going to be a typical MMO that just swaps warcraft terminology with elder scrolls terminology. If the gameplay systems are nothing but right clicking and hotbars, count me out.

Well the Elder Scrolls series definitely has the Lore and the vast open world to support an MMO, it also has the traditionally terrible combat and mechanics as well, for an MMO.
