Today The Buzz Is About: Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Seriously, watch this trailer. Everybody's talking about it!

If I see a single trailer referenced multiple times in one morning on Twitter and more than one message board, there's a good chance I'm going to watch it. You should watch this too.
 

  

 
 
The game is Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, and it appears to be the brainchild of animator Michel Gagné, who's worked on everything from An American Tail (Fievel!!!) to best-movie-of-all-time The Iron Giant. This looks like some fashion of puzzle-oriented shooter for the PC, and there's an official production blog you can take a look at for some background on the game. 
 
More to the point, I think I just had one of those "I can't believe games look like this now" sorts of moments.

Very nice. Liquid smooth. Much respect for soundtrack choice. I hope the actual game sports tunes like that. Looks fucking tough.

If you'd added 'on bad acid' you'd have absolutely nailed it. edit: wow, turns out he did special effects for the Star Wars: Clone Wars show on Cartoon Network which was made by Gendy Tartakovsky. Looks like more than just coincidence.

Awesome.  Hope it comes to Steam, so it'll meet with some extra success.

I think the music fits 100% perfectly and I'm not exactly a big metalhead.

Artistically, this looks a LOT like Hunted Forever and Patapon.  It's also got a mix of Gojira's video for "All The Tears":

Wow. Thanks for getting me to watch that video. I probably would have come across it once I eventually got the itch to look for videos from this record. But yeah, it does bare a striking resemblance to the game in a way. Especially the corridor navigation (although it also made me think loco-roco a bit). But the art style of all these examples is too round or not disturbed enough to really match up. And the fluidity of ITPS makes it feel quite unique... maybe I just need to find an HD version of that video?

But the silhouette idea is anything but new. It just hasn't become cliche... yet.

As far as gaming compatible music goes Ron Jarzombek needs to be hired ASAP. Take a listen to Spastic Ink - Words for Nerds. Any of these mini tracks could be applied to a game seemlessly in long form. The third set seems to fit this game in my mind.

Looks excessively inspired by H.P. Lovecraft for some of the look of the creatures in the game & exquisitely delightful, hoping that it goes to XBLA but will be happy to get it on the PC as it looks like a blast.

All the art styles of all the games people have already mentioned it reminds them of... it's the new cell shading.


Sure it looks great, but I'm wondering how the gameplay is.  Some of it looks very unforgiving - requiring precise movement / timing, even memorization.  Which is fine once you learn what you have to do & when, but the trial & error to get to that point is too frustrating for me.

An XBLA version would be nice. The game looks great.

Comparisons to Patapon are inevitable, as well.
