Wii Price Drop: $199.99, September 27

OK, well that's officially official now.

I have a Wii.
I have a Wii.
If you were really paying attention, you've probably already seen a zillion scans of retailer fliers showing that a Wii price drop was in the works. Nintendo has made it official today via a press release. The offering will feature the same package that is currently on shelves, giving you one Remote, a Nunchuk, and a copy of Wii Sports to go with your friendly white game device.

The company also took the time to reiterate some bits about its upcoming games, noting that Wii Fit Plus is out on October 4 and that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be available on November 15.

And my procrastination on deciding whether or not to sell my Wii has cost me $50. Thus, I'm totally deciding not to.

Maybe I should buy another Wii just to sell it so I can fit in.

I dunno, I'm thinking about getting a Wii after this.  I mean, it has the ever important VC plus games like Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario, No More Heroes.  I would drop 200 bones for one I think, even with my measly grad school budget :(

OoT was a big transition (2d to 3d).

I think it's a little unfair to expect that much of a dramatic change for the next Zelda title. I mean what the hell could they do that would be equally as stunning as the LTTP to OoT jump.

Yeah because Mario Galaxy, Prime 3, SSMB, Zelda: TP, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc can all be beaten in 10 minutes.

You're being a little unfair I'd say.

I already have a Wii, and I'm glad I have one because it's very good at its job: collecting dust.

I think it's unfair to make the assumption that I want to play those games. My complaint with the Wii is more fundamental than the game selection (although I do think it has the shortest list of AAA titles this generation).

I hate using a wiimote. I hate it. It feels wrong. And I've heard people tell me that I "just need to get used to it." Now, I've played Prime 3 (for longer than 10 minutes) and the AI seemed noticeably dumbed-down from the GC games. And when you're making gameplay concessions for your control scheme, that is an indication that something is wrong with the way the game controls. And in the case of the Wii, the control schemes are unfortunately limited by the hardware.

Maybe a MotionPlus could change my mind, but honestly I don't see anything getting me into Wii games. The difference in input lag from PC shooters to console shooters took me long enough to adjust to. I'm just not going to be comfortable with an input method as imprecise as "wave yr. arms!" I sold my DS after a couple of months for the same reason; games like Trauma Center demanded a level of precision that the hardware was not able to facilitate.

The AI is not dumbed down, nor is the AI in the Trilogy release (with the same controls as Prime 3) dumbed down which would mean any changes weren't due to the controls as they would be retained to the ports. There's nothing imprecise about such games. It seems your hate for it is merely based on personal incompetence (if we believe your experiences are true, how can just about anyone get used to it, and use it well, but not you?) and false assumptions you spew out as facts. You should seek help if you really do have such strong feelings over games, and in fact games you do not have to, and apparently don't, experience.

The fact you condemn them for waggle when the majority of their gameplay relies on the pointer controls, which are a completely different aspect of the remote, and one that lacks nothing, has next to no issues and would not be improved with better motion sensing, tells me you haven't actually played these games. Now, they definitely include some motion actions, but they're no different to parts of conventional controller games that require button mashing. They aren't the focus, they aren't intended to be precise, they work very well. In fact, most of them aren't even done during frantic gameplay, as motion controls were restricted to pulling switches and other such actions, aside from the grapple beam which could (and had to) be used on some enemies.

Cool, I guess.

I'm not a hater or anything, the Wii has a lot of potential, but Nintendo needs to start releasing some worth while games. I can count the number of games I want to play on one hand and still have some fingers left over.

I still haven't gotten used to holding a wiimote in a FPS perfectly steady.  Sure the imprecision is in my arm & hand, but mouse or gamepad don't have that particular problem.

I think that's very true for anyone who would feel such obsessive passion over a game.

Now that's absolutely untrue and why I wanted to respond to this.  If there's one thing I'd love to see improved in the realm of pointer style motion controls it'd be tracking outside of the range the Wiimote + sensor bar have now.  I just hate aiming off the side of the screen, my character starts spinning or stands still (depending on the game and/or settings), then I aim back at the screen and it takes a second to recognize that and I'm already moving in some other direction.  There is HUGE room for improvement in all aspects of the motion control we have in games now.

Yes, next to no issues means it has that one issue of the range of the sensor bar. Still, it's quite a wide range, I honestly fail to see how most people need more, not once did I go out of range in any game that uses the pointer functions. It works well. I can see why people would prefer your description, but even so, you'd still have a specific range that would end up either constantly turning or stopping the turn depending on the options. After all, you aren't going to turn your wrist all around to do quick turns. It would just be somewhat wider, and for most people (if with options) I imagine not THAT much wider.

The natural motion of the wrist is still within a particular angle that I feel the sensor bar covers well enough, requiring more would border on unconvenient waggle style motions that would not offer precision. This could be "fixed" with a high degree of sensitivity, but then that would make the fact you say you can't keep your wrist steady even worse, and make it a problem for people who had it steady enough previously (try resting it on your lap...). Red Steel 2 uses M+ for out-of-range sensing, we'll see how it works there, but I don't think it's going to be as good as you imagine it would be with that style of controls.

They should have gone the extra mile and drop the price to 179.99. 50 bucks just isn't enough to make a serious impact on sales. Better then nothing though. Now there is finally no console selling for the launch price. However it is still the only console that hasn't been updated in any way. Still uses 90nm technology while 360 and PS3 have moved on to 65nm and 45nm. I guess it doesn't make much difference though. It's pretty small and light as it is.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, and if anyone has sorry for a repeat.
But in the UK, there isn't really any  price drop. Nintendo up'ed the price due to the Pound earlier this year, and now with this worldwide price drop, the cost of the Wii is now it's original price.
Although, there is meant to be a bundle with Wii Sports Resort and motion plus.

Everyone saw this coming.  After the price drops of the PS3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo had to lower the Wii's price to stay competitive.

Well, I still don't want one.  Played the Wii at a friend's house a few times.  I really don't understand the appeal when you could have a 360 or a PS3.  I guess if it was free I'd take one...

Hardly. The WIi holiday lineup includes titles like this, this, this, this, and this. That doesn't even include sports games that provide a great new experience like Pro Evo Soccer 10 since I don't play such games much myself, and doesn't include WiiWare which has its own great stuff. How many titles does one need for the "holidays" and does that one have all the great recent Wii titles like Anno, Muramasa, and Little King's Story?

Not that this has anything to do with the topic...

I'm not interested in debating consoles.   Taste obviously differs, play what you want to play.  I'm sure the people who developed A Boy and His Blob will appreciate your money.
I haven't bought a single Wii game this year, nor does it look like I will.  The games you linked aren't appealing to me.  On the other hand, just yesterday I picked up Persona for my dusty PSP.

Yes, the tone of "you know it's bad when..." (you who? me? and what is bad? that you personally don't want Wii games is bad is what you now claim you meant? like anyone should care) certainly merely indicated a personal preference without attempts to tie it to some sort of objective issue with the Wii. Play what you want to play too, just don't project your opinion as some kind of industry wide problem. If you do, expect a comment. If you haven't found one game on Wii that is interesting this year I do wonder exactly what kind of games you play though, since it's covered almost any genre with quality titles from respected developers, aside from FPS and JRPG, the latter of which is covered in the holidays.

The Wii has easily been the best console this generation, regardless of what all the haters say. And it has the best lineup this holiday, too. The haters can keep hating, and the rest of us can just keep enjoying all of the great games that come out on the Wii.

Um? I didn't launch a personal attack, or say your opinion is wrong. I merely corrected your blatantly false statements (the stuff about dumbed down this or that, assumptions about the reasons behind this imaginary dumbing down, claims of imprecision, etc). Of course, this type of rebuttal was expected since you have nothing to argue against what I actually said, so instead resort to claiming random shit a page later.

Haha, calling these people trolls is far too dignified. A good troll knows how to stir up message board chaos to the chagrin of all involved.

No, these yahoos truly believe what comes out of their miserable keyboards. And it is only to the detriment of reasonable representatives of their consoles (PS3 and 360 fans who do not want to associate with idiots). They took the opportunity of the Xbox and PS3 price drops to suddenly harp on the Wii's price, as if it is somehow ridiculous that anyone would pay 250 dollars for a videogame console that just so happens to not be their own. But no, the PS3 at 400+ dollars for two and a half years is just fine!

What makes these tears so delicious for Nintendo fans such as myself is the true fact of the matter: Nintendo was able to strap two Gamecube's together, add motion controls (that are mostly underutilized), entirely rebrand the Nintendo franchise, and was able to completely undermine the Microsoft and Sony business model.

And guess what folks, it aint coming back. E3 2009 is proof enough of that.

I have a black PS3, a black PS2, a black 360, and a black TV, all on a black entertainment center.  The Wii is just interesting enough to me that I'd pay $200 for a black one.  A white one though?  Forget about it.
