Wii U Arrives in United States on November 18

The date is set, prices are in ($299, $349), new games have been announced (Bayonetta 2, Black Ops 2), and the road to Wii U's launch has begun.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo of America has announced a release date for Wii U in the United States, and it's November 18. It doesn't launch in Japan until December 8, but Nintendo launched the original Wii first outside of Japan, too.

There are two sets. The basic set includes a Wii U, Game Pad, Game Pad charging cable, AC adaptor, HDMI cable, sensor bar and 8GB of memory. The "deluxe" set also includes 32GB of memory, a Game Pad charging cable, Game Pad cradle, a copy of NintendoLand, and enrollment in a premium service on Nintendo Direct, where you earn points for each purchase and can redeem them later for other purchases.

The big question? Price. It's $299 for the basic set, and $349 for the deluxe set.

As for big game announcements, Nintendo is publishing (funding?) Bayonetta 2 with Platinum Games, Monolith Soft is making a new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming to the platform, and there's a new Monster Hunter. Well, "new." Monster Hunter Ultimate (Monster Hunter Tri G U in Japan) is based on the 3DS game, and the save data will be interchangeable between the two platforms. It's available at launch in Japan, and March everywhere else.

Project P-100, also from Platinum Games, was easily one of the most exciting Wii U games at E3, and that's been renamed The Wonderful 101. Spoiler: still looks awesome. Epic Mickey 2 will also be receiving a Wii U upgrade, and Activision made the clutch announcement of Skylanders Giants. Nintendo didn't discuss the NFC features baked into the Game Pad, though, so one might expect that will still have a separate device to scan the characters in.

Nintendo broke down the hilariously large "launch window" for Wii U, as well: November 18 until the end of March. Besides New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand, the company wasn't confirming release dates, but since Pikmin 3 isn't coming out until next spring in Japan, I wouldn't expect it over here this year, either.

No Caption Provided

In America, Nintendo spent the most time going over its big media initiative, Nintendo TVii. It aggregates content services--Amazon, Hulu Plus, etc.--and allows users to search, track, purchase, and play content from them on the Game Pad and the TV. There's a neat dynamic between the Game Pad and TV, too. The Game Pad takes screen captures of what's happening on TV, and allows users to comment and share on Facebook and Twitter. You also have access to your DVR through the Game Pad, though right now, that seems to mean TiVO-only devices.

Nintendo TVii launches alongside the device this year, but only in the United States and Canada.

The company also unveiled a strange interface for Nintendo TVii. Maybe it'll make more sense in our hands?

No Caption Provided

Over in Japan, there were some big announcements that should guarantee some folks on day one (like, say, 8-4). In addition to an even more deluxe package that comes with a Pro controller and a copy of Monster Hunter Ultimate, anyone who buys the premium version of the console also gains an invite to the upcoming beta for Dragon Quest X.

The only thing that appeals to me about this thing is the controller. Not for playing games because it looks odd and cumbersome like a tablet but for the multimedia aspect. I like the idea of it having media controls, but if it's just for Netflix and online media apps, it doesn't really do anything for me either.

I'm rather disappointed that Bayonetta 2 is a WiiU exclusive, as I've had little to no interest in getting a WiiU - seems like it's offering the same experience I'm having with the Xbox/PS3 today...

Wonder if it's a timed exclusive, or real exclusive... as it feels like an odd fit.

I just wish someone would tell nintendo about the idea that when the new consoles come out the WII U is gonna be old and publishers won't want to make games for it.

hmmmm, $350? Sounds like a decent deal for that package. The big question as to whether or not I should be excited about Wii-U is price, as it's not "really" next gen, so paying more than a current gen console would be a little much. $350 is a good price point though, I may be on board.

This was their moment to produce some hype. I don't know if it's my age, or the nature of the system but I just feel weird thinking a new console has been announced and for the first time ever, I don't give a single fuck.

Exactly the same here. I don't hate the thing, if people wanna buy it then fair dues, I just have no feelings on it at all.

Same here. It's probably a combination of the disappointment of the Wii and the saturation of 1st party Nintendo titles; mainly due to a lack of innovation on their part. I really hope they step it up and end up bringing out some awesome games (and by that I mean different as well), other than that I really could not give a fuck about the Wii U. It really is a pity and rather sad since Nintendo was such a huge part of people's childhoods (including mine).

I could see the wii u having poor sales, the exclusives tank and then developers cease making games strictly for the wii u rendering it kind of pointless.

At least it looks like they may get the online right this time around with Nintendo TVii.

Man I hope Bayonetta 2 is "exclusive" the same way RE4 was a game cube "exclusive" (along with most of the rest of the camcom 5). I really want to play it, give no fucks about other wii u titles, and am certainly not going to buy one.

Yeah, I hope so too. Exclusive sequels are stupid, especially since I doubt Bayonetta 2 will utilize the controller the way Rayman Legends does.

I think the reason that this reaction is felt so strongly is because what they showed off is THEIR new console, not A new console. We've seen dual screens, multiplayer, Netflix, Mario games, COD, etc before on other platforms. Because of the success of Wii, we're all too familiar with motion controls as well. The graphics look much better than Wii, but essentially equivalent to current consoles. Activision said it best in their segment of the live stream: "This is the best we've ever made COD look on Nintendo hardware". The last bit of that sentence says everything. The Wii U is Nintendo coming up to par with the current generation of technology - Only to have it completely change next year.

I know someone who played the WiiU a few weeks back, and he said the visuals were better than the PS3 and 360. When I asked by how much, he shrugged. Not as good as a current PC, he said. The other features don't really distinguish it, save for the controller (about which I have severe doubt as to its usefulness). A big pile of meh, here.

The "hilariously large" launch window probably means third party support is still lackluster. Not something that inspires confidence.

What I really want to know is if they've fixed the motion controls. Even with the upgrades Nintendo offered, the Wii just didn't quite cut it for me on accuracy and response.

Not that anyone reads comments, but:

  1. I hope the impending WiiU release encourages Sony and MS to leak more info about their next consoles.
  2. I still think they'll be a lot of market (mom) confusion over whether WiiU is an accessory for the current Wii, or a whole new product. Nintendo marketers, I'm looking at you to clear this up.

Wasn't Bayo2 cancelled? From what several others have said elsewhere, it's either Nintendo reviving it as an exclusive or nothing at all since Sega canned it.

I always say that Nintendo is damned if they do, and damned if they don't. They can't win in the eyes of the core gamer.

On the one hand, we accuse them of not giving us "traditonal" games, but now that Bayonetta 2 is exclusive, we're still not happy. Never mind that the game was on its way out, and no other publisher seemed interested in helping out Platinum. It's an honest-to-goodness, brand new action game that's not a port. Other games aren't as lucky to get a second chance.

I'm genuinely interested in what it would take for people to buy the WiiU at this point. The games will come in time, but I think it's a matter of how much, and who's making those games. It seems like the more exclusive 3rd party heavy-hitters Nintendo gets, the angrier players will get. In my eyes, they are heroes for saving Bayonetta 2 from extinction, and it seems silly to be angry at them for that (Platinum is definitely not to be blamed for this). But really, this further justifies a one-console future so that we don't have these situations.

Who cares about graphics? The currant gen have perfectly fine graphics, even if the WiiU's graphics are outdated within the next year or two that doesn't matter as long as Nintendo finds new ways to use the tablet and new awesome art styles (like they usually do) the Wii was well below the xbox and ps3 but Mario galaxy was still one of the best looking game not because Nintendo had a huge 600$ console, but because they know how to design great looking game with the limitations that they have. I am more interested in the gameplay, and if they make games that also look really good that's just a bonus.
