Wii U Won't Support DVDs or Blu-rays

If you had high hopes about watching movies on that fancy new controller screen, you may want to make other plans.

How am I supposed to watch this imaginary Blu-ray release of Super Mario Bros. that absolutely doesn't, and should never, ever exist?
How am I supposed to watch this imaginary Blu-ray release of Super Mario Bros. that absolutely doesn't, and should never, ever exist?

In attempting to merge the hardcore and casual audiences with its new console, Nintendo apparently has little interest in appeasing the movie-watching segments of either of those audiences.

Speaking to investors at E3, Satoru Iwata was asked about the Wii U's capabilities as a playback device for Sony's Blu-ray format, as well as standard DVDs. Iwata's answer left little room for interpretation, as he flatly stated that the Wii U would not support either format.

Iwata's reasoning was that Nintendo believes most people already have relevant players for the favored movie format. Licensing the necessary technology patents to support either format would have ultimately proved too costly.

In this regard, Iwata is probably correct. You can buy a DVD player for less than a tank of gas these days, and while Blu-ray players are a bit less common, it seems unlikely Nintendo would leap at the opportunity to pay a direct competitor licensing fees for what will ultimately amount to ancillary technology for the console. If nothing else, this does appear to signal that Nintendo is looking for ways to ensure its console remains cost-friendly to consumers, even if that means taking some potentially sexy bullet points off the box.

I think with the amount of technology most households have these days, needing a game console to also serve as a DVD player is kind of pointless.

... just shows how expensive gas is these days. eh? Seriously, it can't be THAT expensive if the standalone players are that cheap! You contradict yourself.

Blu-Ray maybe, but DVD? Wouldn't put Nintendo in that embarrassing situation they found themselves last year, when Mario Galaxy shipped with a DVD that the Wii couldn't play.

The problem isn't that I don't have a dedicated DVD player. When I invest in a home system I can only afford support to one system at a time. So if that system doesn't have all the features I expect, why buy it?

No, it doesn't contradict at all. Your statement is the one that is contradictory: Standalone players are so cheap that they should include movie playback on their system. What??

It makes sense to not pay fees when they know no one is going to use that feature of the system. Back when they said the Wii wouldn't play DVDs, I thought "wait, what? That's so stupid," but guess what: I never once, in five years, found myself in a situation where I though 'man, if only my Wii could play DVDs...'

Nintendo's always been very clear about their stance on this issue: "Hey, we make game machines." I disagree with a lot of what Nintendo does, but I really can't find a reason to do so with this.

To all those people trying to justify this shitty move with "...but you already have a DVD player...": The Wii U's big selling feature is that it has this screen controller thingy, which allows you to play Wii U without a TV. Having that controller for watching BluRay, DVD and playing Gamecube games would have been kind of cool and useful. But we get none of that. Instead Nintendo is doing the stupid thing yet again: Not providing us with a feature that we could consider to be standard on other consoles 10 years ago.

I think this is a pretty lazy move by Nintendo. I mean how hard can it be to put something in there that can play DVDs?

I've played ONE Blu-ray disk on my PS3 since I've had it. I just use Netflix. It's cheaper than renting movies at the video store. There is NO WAY I am falling into the whole collecting Blu-ray thing like I did back when DVDs came out. In hindsight, what a monumental waste of money that was! (thousands of dollars!) Not to mention the damn space they used up and the hassle of packing them every time I moved.

That being said, if I get a Wii U (which I probably will), it will be exclusively for playing games, not for watching movies. So if omitting DVD/Blu-ray drives brings the price down for consumers like me, I'm very happy they've decided to do so.

Digital is the wave of the future and I couldn't be happier.

It seemed silly at first but then I remembered that I have 4 device capable of playing DVDs in my house and I only use 1 of them for DVD.  I don't need another.  I've got a PS3 so I don't need another BD player either.

I agree with Iwata and the article.  It'd be a nice bullet point for the box but I think people who really care about this stuff already have it in their homes.

I'm not a expert, but it cost money and as Iwata said, it doesn't really matter all that much. Blue-ray is too hard, owned by Sony or something.
If rumors are right it will use a modified blue-ray made by Nintendo to run the games.

There is also people like me that is not a big fan of the idea that newer gaming consoles should do so much more than just, you known, play games. Its a waste.

- I thought the general consensus is that we all have to many things under our TV and we all strive for systems or boxes that do more then one thing so we do not have to have 10 things in our cabinets.

- I have heard on both Giantbomb and Tested podcasts more then once that Microsoft will shoot themselves in the foot if they did not support blu-ray. This then has to be true for Nintendo too?

- @Iwata people do have other devices for playing movies, more common then not they will have a PS3! or Xbox for media because they support it.

It is not just this, their lack of Online direction even for the Wii U, seemingly lack of effective storage, this and also the lack of real media playback direction - this is NOT a media device.
With what you can get xbox360 and ps3 and likely the next Xbox showing itself to us next year in some form....

Nintendo, I again ask the question: What on earth are you guys doing?

Who watches DVD's from their consoles anyways? And why should Nintendo pay Sony for Blu Ray privileges? Those of us who actually own a Wii play it because Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Punch-Out, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, etc are fun as hell....not to watch a crappy movie that I can get from Netflix or On Demand

Wrong, they are Kyotoites. They are all about money, and less about customer satisfaction. They can make up any excuse they want to, the reason is cash. Why not budge now and then to give some extra incentive to buy your wacky technology that I have no other use for.

Really? "Doing the stupid thing yet again"? Maybe you were pissed that a Wii didn't play a DVD but by not including it they cut down on costs, made the Wii profitable out of the gate, and made an incredible amount of money. I wouldn't really call that a stupid decision. Also I didn't see an uproar of people who bought a Wii complaining about a lack of DVD playing. It's really not a big deal/

Sounds like they're working on their own high-capacity disk technology. I guess that's the only option, really, since they can't license Sony's disk format and they can't limited their new consoles by DVD capacity.

They do their crazy Japanese thing and it works just fine for them. I'm more surprised that this isn't powered by jelly beans and requires you to wear an electronic hat as a controller.

I think this is corp-speak for 'We don't want to use technology that is easily broken the fuck open and pirated.'. Because, let's be honest... licensing too costly? I have absolutely no doubt the R&D put into developing your own proprietary disc format is far more costly than licensing a (dying) technology like DVD.

I am not Nintendo, I don't give a shit how much money they make. I simply want the best console possible and Wii U ain't that. If they don't want to spend the money, they should have the DVD/BluRay support as download, just like for example Microsoft did on the Xbox1, where the DVD support was optional and came in the form of a IR remote and USB dongle that would unlock it. If Nintendo wants to sell people and their screen controller, they should give them a really good reason to want one, I just don't see them doing that right now.

Outside of people who fly into Bitch Mode at the mere mention of the word Nintendo (people who won't be buying their product anyway) who really cares? 1. If anyone doesn't have a DVD player at this point, it's their problem. 2. Who in their right mind would expect Nintendo to pay Sony for the right to pay Blu-Rays? This is the entire reason the WiiU runs on a proprietary disc format in the first place. 3. It's not like it won't have internet access and Netflix.

They said the same bullshit last time. I didn't have a DVD player until I bought my PS2 in 2005. Even then many people have more than one television in the house and it never hurts to have redundancy. A household w/ one Blu-Ray player? Get the Wii U and guess what, now they have a Blu-Ray player in the living room and the parents now have move the old one into their bedroom!

This is all about saving money and trying to look like "oh hey people wouldn't be interested in this anyway". I mean sure, this is hardly a dealbreaker but it is so Nintendo being the typical curmudgeon. I don't have Blu-Ray player and I don't want to buy a standalone one because I don't want like having many electronic devices on my television stand. options nintendo we like having them. I can stream videos, music, pictures from my desktop PC on my 360. Multimedia and multiple functions is the trend now and has been for some time, someone should inform Nintendo that mobile phones do more than make calls and text, they browse the web, play games, and install apps!

Most people have a way to browse the internet but this certainly didn't stop Nintendo from including a browser on the 3DS and Wii! You guys just don't want to pay royalties and keep that lofty profit per system sold.

Really, Alex? I guess HD Netflix is no longer a thing. I don't even know anyone with a Blu-Ray player besides those with a PS3 (and they barely own any discs, at that). You know as well as I do that film consumption is increasingly going to the cloud, if the majority of such isn't already there.
Really? You don't know anyone with a Blu-Ray player? How little people do you know?

Believe it or not, not everyone has the fastest internet connection and plenty of people still buy or rent DVDs and Blu-Rays, why do you think Red Box is still growing? Optical media is going to die yes, but it already shopping for coffins just yet. I still rent plenty of DVDs from Netflix and they have more DVD subscribers than Instant Watch only.

I suppose when you two buy a phone, all it has to do is text and talk. None of that camera, music playback, web browsing, or music streaming nonsense!

you sound like a pair of old codgers, I bet you never complained about Netflix or the Web Browser on the original Wii now did you? Hell I bet you even used them time-to-time and it was nice wasn't it? Don't pretend that the trend of technology isn't to have increased functionality for the past decade, nothing wrong with redundancy.

Nothing wrong with increased functionality and options.

@bonbolapti said:
Look it makes fucking sense, If you don't have a DVD/BLUERAY player by now, why the fuck are you buying a Wii U for it?
My first DVD player was 360, it was nice having one in my room instead of having to go to the living room to watch DVDs. Some people (like me) don't feel like it is warranted enough to get their own DVD or Blu-Ray player but when they get a game system, it is rather welcome for it to also play movies. I still don't have a Blu-Ray player and if I got the Wii U it would be nice of it was also my first.

I buy the systems primarily for the games, but functionality is functionality. Having options is a good thing.
