This week, we have stories of perseverance, moving on, and reflections on the loud discussion from the last few weeks.

I spent the weekend playing a game, it just wasn't a video game. It was real-life golf.

No Caption Provided

Honestly, the whole thing experience is a bit like Peggle to me. There's absolutely a deep level of skill required to play well, but most of the time, it feels like anything that goes my way comes down to chance accidents. That may or may not have something to do with me playing two or three times a year and having never taken a lesson on how to hold a club properly, but it's much easier to blame the wind for taking my ball into the woods.

It was not an insignificant amount of golf this weekend, either. It was a full 36 holes, which chewed up more than 10 hours of my weekend. (It's an annual event where we get together with my dad's side of the family to play. Most of them are actually okay.) In the back nine of day two, however, everything started to click. The ball was going exactly where I wanted it to go. A shot from 80 yards out, deep in a sand trap, fell feet from the hole. Golf, like anything else, often feels mysterious and random, but when you're able to exert your will, it's powerfully satisfying.

I should go take a lesson.

When I consider all the ways your body changes as you get older, the one that terrifies the most is losing my mind. Everything else seems managable, but being unable to trust your own brain...man. Sean Baptiste has been living with this reality for years, thanks to a brain tumor that's been been consistently causing problems. Previously of Harmonix, Baptiste is now at Fire Hose Games, where he manages the studio's community, designs games, and wrestles with his brain constantly forgetting things.

"Baptiste recounts a particular incident where his wife, Maria O'Brien, returned from work at Harmonix to find him walking back and forth in a line, a rum-and-Coke in each hand, and their dogs following along behind him. 'Hi! You're home! We're having a parade!' he informed her. 'I made these for you!'

'I'm trying to hand her these drinks, and she realizes that I've fallen into dissociative sleep. So she tries to get me to sit down in the living room.' Maria leaves his side momentarily to change from her work clothes, but soon hears a commotion in the kitchen. She rushes in only to find Baptiste with his head in the refrigerator vegetable drawer. 'I'm talking to the vegetables. They're telling me things about stuff.'"

Jenn Frank is one of my longtime buds in the small circle that is games writers. She's one of our best talents, our smartest minds, and it was a pleasure to have her on the morning show not long ago. She was caught in the recent crossfire that's engulged much of the debate on Twitter these last few weeks, and she's leaving because of it. The harassment was too much, too personal, and she deserved none of it. They just wanted to push her out. Unfortunately they won.

"Someone recently asked me on Twitter whether--knowing what I know now--I would do it all over again. I got a little distracted, spent a couple Tweets defending the op-ed, but the truth is, yes. Yes, in a heartbeat.

It’s almost ugly to say, but I’m actually grateful to GamerGate. All this time, I’ve felt beholden to video games, and to the people who make them or play them or read and write about them. Maybe it really is a conflict of interests: my own. It’s conflicts all the way down.

And really, my God, I don’t have to do this. I’ve been given permission to move on to another audience. I have faith in my abilities to do something, anything else, without feeling inhibited or limited by my hobby."

I'm glad you choose to highlight Jim Sterling's conspiracy article it was one of my favourite peaces on the whole thing. I'm fully of the opinion that both sides have valid points but it's being burried by hate. If I'm honest, I can't wait for it to pass. I think that reflection on the whole issue is the last value it can bring because right now it's all too heated.

I'm also glad you choose to highlight another videos from Destructoid. I hope we eventually see a video from the ever tall Ben Pack-Man Pack and come full circle.

Thanks for another week of WR Patrick.

There have been a lot of industry casualties over the last couple of weeks, but what happened to Jenn Frank was easily the most heartbreaking. I know this is selfish, but I kind of hope she makes her way back to games writing, even if it's in a roundabout or part-time fashion.

Seeing "The harassment was too much, too personal, and she deserved none of it. They just wanted to push her out. Unfortunately they won" is part of the problem. I completely agree there was harassment that cannot be condoned. However, referring to dissenting opinion and grouping it with harassers without any distinction is irresponsible. This is why there is a growing rift between readers and press.

Conflict of interest in Journalism = Bad, Personal Harassments because of this = Bad, the fact that this was censored and people in leadership positions largely ignored it = Bad.

The real downer of GamerGate is that almost everyone involved directly was fanning one side of the fire or the other. In the midst of all of that, the whole point got lost in a barrage of emotionalism rather than professionalism (the lack of which started this whole thing).

I've enjoyed much of Ms. Frank's work (except for her last Guardian article). It is tragic that she was forced out. Where were all her colleagues (who are now almost universally praising her) before, when she was precariously eking out a place as a freelancer? Where there not any more stable positions available for someone widely respected by her peers? The games media remains very white and very male. That is something even the most rabid 4channer can't have caused.

Exactly. I just give the press more flak because they should know better and act with professionalism.

Here's a piece that I read yesterday that I found pretty interesting:

https://plus.google.com/app/basic/stream/z13fftyjopfahdvz504cdldh0zr1j52o12w

If you're one of the people that feels your potentially legitimate concerns are being ignored, I'd highly suggest reading it. I think it pretty clearly states the viewpoint of many within the industry with regards to why it's so difficult to actually have that discussion right now (in spite of the fact that most people in the industry are totally open to talking about these things).

Thanks for another week of WR Patrick.

I found that and TBs video being highlighted very encouraging, for the record I do have criticisms of the piece as a whole but have learnt that I value keeping things civil above "winning". On reflection I'm lucky I can make that choice so comparatively easily.

Gamers Gate like so many arguments on the internet have two sides that both have good arguments that are drowned out by louder assholes and extremists on both sides.

Which is why it`s never a good idea to take "a side" on the internet because you will just be associated with a bunch of people you don`t like or agree with.

I can't say I agree with everything Jann Frank has to say about the #GamerGate movement. There are bad eggs on both sides of the argument, and that sucks that she was possibly a target for some hate. In the end, she chose to leave. That was completely up to her. Maybe she'll be better for it, who knows (I don't).

The core of GamerGate is trying to accomplish something pretty great. I'll never endorse harassment or attack over the internet, and neither should any of you. But to say the outliers are the norm, is to be untruthful and dishonest.

I also believe Leigh Alexander is a pot stirrer. She has a very extreme agenda and has no problem using her power in the media arena to silence or shame those who disagree. She's had some very angry and unprofessional tweets as of late. And I must say, if you are a public figure, your tweets are an extension of your professional self.

Anyway, nice WR P-Klep. Giantbomb is one of the few sites the industry should look to as a whole when it comes to journalistic/gaming ethics.

@flyingroman: Well...

More and more outlets have started to outsource their writing to freelancers because: A) it's a lot cheaper and B) video game journalism as a whole has moved toward more video content. It's expensive to keep writers around on the payroll when the majority of your traffic comes from your video content.

On the other side of things, video game publishers and developers are starting to use social media and Youtube to directly speak to their audiences. And of course the audience is flocking towards them because, ewww, "opinions and context are gross", "video games journalists are biased anyways". Oh, and don't forget Youtubers.

This trend can be seen with the demise of print magazines (the old EGM, GamePro, Nintendo Power, OPM and such), multiple gaming websites being either shutdown or downsized (1UP, Gametrailers, G4, Rev3, and many, many more).

That's the business side of things.

And now the readership side of things. A majority of readers of video games sites are male. Heck, you can have a look at the recent survey for GB at http://www.podsurvey.com/bomb/thanks. A majority of people interested in video games journalism are male. We could guess whether the audience reflects the writers or vice versa, but these are the facts. Also, judging by this panel hosted by Gamespot's very own Mary Kish, a vocal minority is very unfriendly towards dissenting voices (as if the recent weeks haven't proven that already).

So, on one side there's a shrinking demand for fulltime writers and a vocal hateful minority in the readership. Both factors not very conducive to hiring different voices.

Then again: "All this talk about video games journalism is boring, start talking about games already!".

Got burnt out on reading on Gamergate halfway through the first article. Read through most of the rest. My first clue that it was going on was reading a complaint or two from journalists I follow on twitter. Took me the better part of a week to have a word to go with it to see what they were complaining about. And really "complain" is a nice descriptor. I found myself being accused of being a misogynist for not donating money to Zoe Quinn, a woman who I know next to nothing about whose game I haven't played. Granted the person that was accusing me was really just referencing their twitter followers and isn't a journalist anymore. But the second one that did it was.

I watch all of Anita's videos and typically click like and sometimes even share them. I'm not a fan of Leigh Alexander's opinions but generally find her writing fascinating. I'm not familiar at all with Ann Frank. I've never harassed anyone to my recollect.

Am I really a misogynist for not donating to Zoe Quinn? I have a mortgage, a massive amount of credit card debt, and a ton of stuff wrong with my house. I'm just now starting to get a handle on my debt.

The fact is I know I'm not a misogynist. I know I'm not a bad person for not donating. I just don't appreciate it being inferred by people I respect. But I also know internet fame breeds vitriol in an audience. Never fails. Just up to me to be the understanding one. It doesn't hurt my feelings too much.

I don't see that anyone comes off very well in this whole thing. Zoe Quinn (and Anita Sarkeesian) are making careers out of co-opting actual important discussions that we should be having in order to make money for themselves, and Quinn being outed by her ex immediately turned to riling up the moron brigade that uses terms like "Social Justice Warrior" so that the real issue - that most game "journalists" and "reviewers" love the cushy set-up they get where they can trade favors of all types for coverage - became immediately obscured, and the game journos sure aren't shying away from using it for cover, either.

Now Quinn's supporters look like sycophants and the anti-Quinn types sound like knuckledraggers, and nothing positive will come from all this. Just another day on the internet, I suppose.

@captaininvictus: @xeirus: Two things I'd like to point out here.

It has never been our intent on the moderation side to stifle legitimate civil conversation, but we are going to stick to enforcing rules that prohibit harassment and discussions of people's private personal lives. Unfortunately, a lot of these recent debates were initially very tightly coupled with a lot of things inappropriate for discussion here, and as a result, we had to lock things down pretty hard to prevent things from entering inappropriate territory and getting out of hand.

Also, some of the language is a bit gross in the images in that post. Keep in mind that we can and will hold you responsible for linking to content that breaks the forum rules.

We're not trying to stop any sort of a well-reasoned, peaceable discussion here, but we have a policy of not allowing discussion of the personal lives of others on the Giant Bomb dot com. We're actively trying to make Giant Bomb a more friendly, open place for decent individuals. We ask that everyone treat each other with respect and be polite in their arguments.

That panel seems interesting, thanks! I'll have a look.

However, I think you are underestimating the audience's desire for (quality!) opinion pieces and in depth critique. Their is a certain stink of, uh, untrustworthiness that the "traditional" games media has nowadays (GB excluded) according to many people (including myself). And I think that's the main driving reason towards newer forms of game media.

On the internet, there are aggressive minorities targetting anything. If they had any influence on hiring policies, I don't we would have seen the huge cluster fuck around Dan and Jason's hiring. I think the problem on this front lies within the media. Where and in what form, I don't know.

@patrickklepek Hey Patrick, great assortment of articles on this particular shitshow. I'm really glad when a lot of the harassment finally stops and we don't lose more important voices in the industry.

Aside from that, I was wondering why Todd VanDerWerff wasn't credited personally in the "GamerGate" roundup. I think he is a particularly interesting writer, even though he's more a pop-culture guy than a strict games writer. And even though he's writing that piece for a big site like Vox, he's still his own voice. I'd think that the by-line should be respected, when it's there...

Otherwise keep up the great work with Worth Reading, it's easily one of my favorite features on the site!

Awww, why's that? I generally like their videos. That NES one is great, and Maisie Williams seems like the quintessential teen girl, which is kind of heartwarming. Flipping the camera the bird was hilarious.

My only issue with the channel is that they don't rotate new kids/teens/elders in very often, and are building this stable of personalities, some of which have made the jump from "Kids React to..." to "Teens React to..." and at least one of which has made the jump from "Teens React to..." to "YouTubers React to...". It's crazy that they've had some of the same kids on the channel for like 4 years. It would feel more like getting the voice of a generation if they kept getting a grab bag of different kids/teens/elders, but instead I just feel like I'm getting to know the specific personalities of those 20 or so people really well.

Also, for a series that otherwise has a pretty diverse group of people, that series has fuck all Hispanic people.

Also also, it has this one teen that I swear is a time traveling Brad Muir.

You're overlooking her actual experience here. For her, the outliers were the norm. Being the focus of harassment is a looot different than just seeing it from the outside. Overall there might be plenty of voices that want something legitimate from gamersgate. The thing is, we're talking about one specific person's experience with the ordeal -- and her experience was getting hundreds and thousands of people yelling at her that she's worthless or corrupt and even worse things besides. She wasn't a 'possible' target for 'some' hate. She was a very real target for an overwhelming amount of it. When you're an ant getting burned under a magnifying glass, the fact that the sun is smiling normally on the plant right next to you doesn't seem particularly important.

Basically, yeah.

I think it's true many people rushed to characterize these guys as a power group of privileged kids. From what they've been posting they seem altogether different. Nerdy introverts, often not white males, often with some unfulfilled creative aspirations (or educating themselves to realize them)... there's more confusion and existential anger than malice. Mostly they just seem starved for pandering, for a safe space and for escapism.

I get it. Been there, done that. But that doesn't justify the outwardly expressions meant to hurt people from the extremes nor the mob mentality of the larger group. In the worst cases, they are so overzealous and so fundamentally wrong that you just can't engage to unravel what's going on there.

Mostly, things need to die down before they can start from a different place, and I can't friggin' wait, honestly, because this is getting really old really fast and nobody is happy about it.

Also, bless Tim Schafer. The man has been patient as hell, completely open and generally just an all around stand-up guy. Giving Tim Schafer an earnest man-hug is officially now on my bucket list.

Gamergate boiled down

man releases personal info about a small time dev
info contains smoke of ethics breach
4chan gets riled up
professional victims stream in to capitalize on the situation with both real and false accusations
actual discussion is drowned out by internet hate machine
click-bait gaming blogsites throw gas on the flames with poorly researched derogatory articles
whole thing snowballs collecting bigger names along the way
large segment of the community now heavily distrustful of industry and the media is confused about who it's market is

Jenn Frank may be a great writer and an amazing person. I wouldn't know. I do know she wrote a biased article in a fairly well known publication with little to no reference of her relationship with the subject and knowingly antagonized a vengeful group. If she was attacked for being honest and thoughtful I would share in seeing her as a martyr, but she wasn't. She was attacked for being biased and using her position to further cloud the actual issue. I wish her good luck in whatever she chooses to do next
