Ubisoft Announces Beyond Good & Evil Downloadable HD Rerelease
I bought and beat beyond good and evil for the gamecube all those years ago. For it's time, it was a great game. I just don't feel the need to go back. The one thing that sticks out in my mind about it is the final boss encounter. That fight was frustrating as hell because they invert your controls during the fight. It part mind control thing or something. I just remember inverted controls and my brain not being able to flip.
" I said it in the forums, I'll say it again here: No PC-Version? ... Screw Ubisoft. "In all fairness, your other head would probably say "Screw Ubisoft!" after they put out a PC version, anyway.
Enter rant:
They can't do right by PC gamers, and do wrong by them often enough. It's hard to imagine why they would bother at this point. Whereas, to millions of console gamers, Ubisoft is a decent-to-outstanding publisher.
So, with Ubi constantly taking the public image hit with all the (due and undue) slander PC gamers sling, while millions of console users play merrily to their tune; what "PC game publisher" decision do you think helps Ubisoft's bottom line the most?
It would be nice if they got their PC act together. But I see them biding time until some onLive-like (read: secure/controllable) shit comes out to make the mainstream PC market more Ubi-friendly.
My point: Ubisoft is a delicate genius, and you are hurting its feelings! :P
"Keeping with the current rerelease trend, BG&E's models and textures will be receiving a resolution bump, bringing the game up to 1080p"
Uh, what.
I highly doubt they're going to touch the models and textures at all. They're probably just going to bump up the rendering resolution. It's not any different than playing the game at 1900x1080 on the PC version.
Oh don't tell me, you guys didn't know that 1280x720 was the equivalent of 720p?, which means if you've ever played a game at a resolution of 1280x1024 or higher, you were playing them in a larger resolution than 720p.
"The Prince of Persia, Ico, Oddworld, etc HD remakes are all receiving upgraded models and new textures. Like they said, this will be too."Keeping with the current rerelease trend, BG&E's models and textures will be receiving a resolution bump, bringing the game up to 1080p"

Also, there's a difference between playing a game with a resolution of 640 x 480 in 720p, and playing a game with a resolution of 1280 x 720 in 720p.
I started this game on the Gamecube and never finished. I will not buy it again but I may try to play the version I have again.
Great news. Glad I'll finally get a chance to play this on consoles. I really like this HD-izing of old games.

@WinterSnowblind:
I'll believe it when I see it.
The sheer amount of effort involved in upgrading all the visual assets of the game completely contradicts the idea of releasing old games for cheap to make some easy money.
Hey, watch this:
I didn't like this game. I always felt it was vastly overrated and deserved the sales it received. And yes I played it to completion.
Flame away.
@JazzyJeff:Well there are screenshots up on Joystiq now, but Joystiq says all the textures haven't been updated yet. Like others have said, plenty of games have seen HD remakes this generation. Prince of Persia 1, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, Marathon 2, Perfect Dark, Serious Sam 1 and SE, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo...@WinterSnowblind:

Sure it's a fair amount of effort, but it's not unheard of. Not only do the sales of this game help Ubisoft, but it'll get people hyped for the sequel.
Game companies, just know that if you keep this up, the only games I'm going to play anymore at launch are obscure JRPGs that will never be made again. Why did I even bother going back to pick up Jet Set Radio Future, Psychonauts, Zone of the Enders 2, and the Devil May Cry box set? All of these games are going to be available on some platform in the next couple years with better graphics, probably. Hopefully, the controls will hold up better than Sonic Adventure.
Now back to waiting for my 3D Ocarina of Time and Star Fox.
I wish Microsoft weren't such dicks and made the xbox 360 backwards compatible in the first place so I can play this again :(
@Diamond:
Honestly those screenshots don't look any different than the game did for me on the PC. Guess we'll see when it comes out but it's unlikely that they'll touch models/textures at all.
There's a drastic difference between a "remake" and a "rerelease", and I think what this is is developers cashing in on older titles because all they have to do is slap HD on the box and increase the resolution and of course, make it run on the newer consoles and voila. Not entirely a bad thing of course as it's good for people who simply missed the games the first time around, but if it gets anymore common (With any and every game older than a couple years being ported) it's going to start pissing me off.
How about you patch the PC port as well? Add proper gamepad support and remove the horrid, game-braking visual glitches? Huh, Ubisoft? You think you could do that? Hell, add some Steam achievments while you're at it. That's not TOO hard, right?
...f*&$, the PC port sucks.
Second time seems to be the charm for games. Hope it actually sells this time. I loved it on the PS2. For some reason people just don't want to play it when I offer to let them borrow it.
One of my favorites. Still own my PS2 copy, will definitely download on PSN. Now we just need a release date for BG&E 2....
Now THIS game makes sense for an HD re-release. Well only cause the PC port was god awful, really. Will be nice to finally play this game properly.
The original was forced widescreen but had HUD elements on the black letterboxed area so you didn't have the option of zooming in, in case you had a widescreen screen.

" Never played Beyond Good & Evil, and I certainly didn't realize that it was any good. I'm intrigued -- I'm going to grab it on Steam and give it a whirl. "Dude, read this thread. DO NOT pick up the PC port!
This game was well-made, but I still think one of the only reasons it's considered a "classic" is that it sold poorly.
