C-3PO is a protocol droid designed to serve and assist humans with etiquette, customs, and above all translations to ensure to cooperation between cultures and species within the galaxy. One of the more popular Star Wars characters, 3PO has appeared in all six Star Wars films, is a main character in the t.v. show Star Wars: Droids, and various novels, comic books and video games the film saga has spawned. He is portrayed in all six feature films by Anthony Daniels, one of only two characters to be played by the same actor through the saga (the other being Kenny Baker who plays 3PO's counterpart R2D2). C-3PO is a cowardly droid unto his counterpart R2D2, they are two sides of a coin. While 3PO might be a coward he has always been there for his friends and master. 3PO serves as a servant/butler to Anakin Skywalker's wife, Padme Amidala.

C-3PO was built from scraps by the young Anakin Skywalker with the intended purpose to help his mother in The Phantom Menace. It is here where he and R2D2 meet, and the two droids work together on Anakin's podracer. Artoo tells Threepio of the wonders of space and the protocol droid comically retorts, in foreshadowing fashion, that no one would ever get him on a spaceship. When Anakin departs with Qui-Gon Jinn, the boy leaves Threepio behind and makes his mother promise not to sell him. When Anakin returns home in The Attack of the Clones he finds Threepio living with his new step-brother Owen Lars. This time Threepio leaves with Anakin, only to find himself following Artoo into a droid construction facility were his head is removed and placed onto the body of a droid. After reluctantly taking part in the battle of Geonosis, having his head being rescued by Artoo, and getting reunited with his body, he arrives on Naboo where he witnesses the marriage of Anakin and Padme. It is in this scene when Threepio is first shown with his famous gold casing. After not playing much of a significant role in most of the Revenge of the Sith, at the end of the movie he and Artoo are placed in the custody of Bail Organa, who orders Threepio's memory erased to protect Luke and Leia from Darth Vader and the Emperor.
