Being able to fire bullets in quick succession. In earlier video games, often acquired as a power-up.
Video game combat in which combat actions are performed in real-time, rather than through a turn-based structure.
Realism is where a game attempts to accurately mimic real life through gameplay mechanics and visuals. For example, realistic shooters, such as Operation Flashpoint, Full Spectrum Warrior, or Brothers in Arms, typically focus upon squad tactics, i.e. suppressive fire and flanking.
The "kick back" from a gun. Causes the muzzle of your gun and crosshair to rise when fired. It promotes firing in smaller bursts, and forces the player to push the crosshair down to counter act the force of the recoil.
A character that appears in many games, often unrelated. For an example, Cid from the Final Fantasy series.
This character has been sacrificed by the game designers to serve as a warning or amusement (probably both). These are the non-player characters who die at the beginning of the game or level.
Regenerating health is a gameplay mechanic which automatically refills the players health bar after successfully escaping damage for a set amount of time. It is typically seen in RPGs and modern first/third-person shooters.
Reloading is the action of replacing the ammunition magazine inside a gun. It adds a touch of realism to most modern shooters, and a certain amount of tension when a player is forced to reload while under fire.
Respawning is when a player or NPC dies and then reappears moments later - usually in a predetermined location or group of locations - while the game continues.
A term used to describe the flow of action in a typical action game, where the pace is pre-defined to feature fast action and require quick reflexes. As the name suggests, these are games where the player character can run and shoot at the same time.
Characters who speak with a Russian accent.
Often found in either very violent games, or games taking place in or around water, Screen Splatter is a visual representation of blood, water, strawberry jam, or other liquids temporarily obscuring the player's field of vision.
Sometimes, things are just meant to happen the way they do. Usually triggered by a timer, or by the player crossing a checkpoint.
A lead character who never says a word, despite being spoken to.
Eliminating a target with a long-range rifle.
Crunchy frozen water fallen from the sky. Many games feature a snow world, a snow level, or otherwise-connected regions of wintery landscapes.
Any person that is in an Army.
A reversed thumbstick layout for left-handed players. The option isn't default, but is available in most games.
Citizens of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was a country that emerged after the Civil War in The Russian Empire.
Spectating is a game option for a player to simply watch other players playing a game without interacting.
The Spike Video Game Awards recognized the best games of 2005.
