Don't get me wrong, I am pumped to play DOTA 2. I played the original Defense of the Ancients way back when it was just starting to get popular and loved it. I enjoy the MOBA or Hero Arena Games or whatever you wanna call it; I'm actively playing League of Legends right now. But I was watching the stream last night (or early this morning) and when someone killed another player, it still said "pwned". Now, I was okay with the original DOTA doing this because it was a mod that someone created and wasn't anything officially released. Something dumb like that was easily overlooked. But now that Valve is releasing this game proper, in my humble opinion, stuff like that is just simply lame. I mean, I'm still gonna play DOTA 2, but just seeing that kinda irked me the wrong way.
Dota 2
Game » consists of 3 releases. Released Jul 09, 2013
The official free-to-play sequel to the Warcraft III custom scenario that originally popularized the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena sub-genre.
Did I really just see "Pwned"? Really?

It's puerile, sure, but any misgivings are instantly washed away the moment I hear "M-M-M-MONSTER KILL!"
I'm indifferent to peoples hatred towards the term "Pwned".
I'm sure DOTA 2 will have more than enough other jargon that people deem cool until they deem it lame six months later.

@Galiant: Stripping away mechanics (especially popular ones) isn't necessarily an improvement.
League of Legends was more fun to play for me than the original DotA (which I never really got into) because they changed just enough for it to become much easier to get into and therefore more enjoyable to me. I was hoping DOTA2 would similarly change enough to make it more accessible to a broader audience, rather than going the route they seem to have taken of catering to the people that say things like "we don't want new players to play our game". I literally got such a comment in a forum thread just a moment ago for stating that I didn't like the "denial" mechanic.
That said, we haven't seen everything, and maybe the rest of DOTA2 has modes or rankings or whatever that fixes my issues. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Valve will do with DOTA2.
They are making it easier to get into. If you've played dota you should know that having stat-tracking and match making based on your performance is infinity times better than DotA 1 already was, and that's just one of the things they're adding to make it more accessible.@Jokers_Wild said:

I still pronounce it pawned in my head.
Oh crap, I've never thought of that...
You just made playing chess a whole new experience!
It's pronounced "pooned", bro.I still pronounce it pawned in my head.

I got a random shirt from woot.com that had "Born to pwn" scribbled on a helmet and became sick. I immediately threw it in the pile of shit to send to goodwill.
If you're going to whine about internet slang in the wrong places then point it at BBC's new gameshow Epic Win.

This.
Denying increases the skill ceiling. They're going for the hardcore audience, so I'm sure the game will play as similarly to DotA/HoN as possble.
That being said, I'm sure there'll also be a 'casual mode' where denying does nothing and you don't lose gold when you die.

Fuck you, BBC. Fuck you.

I could have sworn I saw it somewhere in that Alpha

I most certainly will not, i'm going to sit here and play minecraft while thinking about how lame BF3 is going to be, and you can't do anything about it! HA!

So it was okay before but now it's not okay because you say so?
He gives a pretty legitimate reason why it was ok before and not now. Learn to read before you post.
Dota was a mod created by a dude while dota 2 is (supposed to be) a professional product made by professional people.
Imo it is almost as bad as bc2 using epic fail.

@Henny said:Next up on the word crusade: fragged. But frag is a classic word. D:
yeah well fragging comes from a real life term in case you didn't know
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fragging
whereas pwned is slang from a video game that should rot in hell
This silly, albeit stupid, affectation has precedence in the series so just because it's being made by "professional people" doesn't necessarily mean it is going out the window.
There is no written rule for this so really this is all based on his decision that it isn't appropriate.
Y'know, phrases like "in my humble opinion" and "kinda irked me the wrong way" indicate that this is all because he's decided it's lame and bothers him is why it should be removed. But now that Valve is releasing this game proper, in my humble opinion, stuff like that is just simply lame. Can't we have a discussion without ad hominem?
HoN has "pwned" too. It was in the original DoTA, gotta keep it the same so no one complains.
@Galiant: Oh you mean making a game for casuals? I think they implemented a casual-esk mode too...
